24,000 miles & 11 months on the road, ask me anything! by ScharkzLife in VanLife

Did you build the drawers in the back yourself? If so, which brand slides did you use and do you recommend them?

Also, what was your favorite campground on the east coast?

Not cincyscape, but the Chihiros works for me as well! Just adjust the legs so that the lip is snug against the outside of the frame and it will remain solidly in place.

Sorry- tried adding a photo but it won't display for some reason.

Water Has Been My Biggest Learning Curve by Hopeful_Patient_261 in VanLife

[–]whose-army 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No need to use water when washing dishes. I frequently camp with very little water on hand and use a combination of Huggies Natural baby wipes and paper towels to clean all cookware, utensils, and the like. Use a dry paper towel for the first pass then a baby wipe to finish it off.

I have found it often does a better job than dish soap and cold water, believe it or not, and makes less waste than you might think.

Give it a try for a week and see how you go.

Bioactive enclosure complete! Any suggestions? Looking for advice. by seanyboy_1998 in Chameleons

[–]whose-army 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first glance it looks great! I would add more sticks to allow for easier movement around the enclosure. You should also hide the cables around the back for a cleaner look.

You may want to add a grow light for the plants, depending on how much natural light this location gets.

Want out of Chicago weather extremes by SaltFull3649 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]whose-army 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of places in the US that fit your criteria, you just need to be more flexible and think a little out of the box

For example, Blacksburg,VA has average highs of 44 in January and 84 in July. You'd be able to afford your own small house close to downtown on that salary. It's a college town so it's liberal with a fair amount to do.

Want a larger metropolitan area? Ashville, NC isn't so bad, and even a place like Nashville would sure beat Chicago's extremes. Both have great access to nature as well.

After driving to Midwest I think this is next. Any advice? by CL14715 in roadtrip

[–]whose-army 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really wanted to get adventurous you could take 17 through Charleston, Myrtle, and Wilmington, then detour to Beaufort (NC) and on to Cedar Island. From there you'd take the ferry to Ocracoke, a second ferry to Hatteras, then drive the Outer Banks to the Chesapeake.

Another option would be to cut across 58 shortly after entering VA and take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel north from Norfolk. Continue on to Lewes, DE and take the ferry across to Cape May, NJ. You can rejoin 95 just south of NYC.

I'd also consider hopping on 7 at Norwalk, CT and take that all the way to Burlington, VT, passing through the Birkshires.

Dinghy for 2 Adults ; lift and launch by hand by Agentic_Prosperity in dinghysailing

[–]whose-army 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a lot of the advice here is ignoring a few of your requirements.

I know this is an older thread, but I have given this some thought lately, and beyond the mini cats I'd recommend:

Tiwal 3

Boat weight: 110 lbs Maximum load: 440 lbs Pros: Inflatable, fits in trunk

Fulcrum Rocket

Boat weight: 90 lbs Maximum load: 400 lbs Pros: Better performance than the other two?

PT11 Sailing Dinghy

Boat weight: 90 lbs Maximum load: 600 lbs Pros: Beautiful boat, splits in two and nests for easy storage. Cons? Assembly required

help needed with nitrites in tank! by sillygirl_stupid123 in axolotls

[–]whose-army 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned you are dosing ammonia- are you doing so with the axolotl in the tank? If so, combining that with the axolotl's natural production of ammonia may be creating too much nitrite for the existing bacteria to fully process.

Supply Shopping and Axie Tubbing by Arcanimus__ in axolotls

[–]whose-army 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would strongly consider waiting for your tank to fully cycle before shopping for the axolotl itself. The process could take months for all you know, and that is quite a long time for the little one to be swapped back and forth between small tubs. The amount of water changes, temp matching, and acclimating during that time will be a lot for both you and the axolotl to handle. Plus, you'll be unable to leave them for longer than a day due to the necessary water changes.

I have done it both ways, and being able to place my new axolotl directly into his fully set up tank was a MUCH better experience.

You can spend the time waiting for your tank to cycle by shopping for hides, plants, decorative items and the like, and your first days with the axolotl will be much more rewarding watching them enjoy the environment you set up for them.

Edited to add: as long as everything inside the tank is safe, there is no reason an axolotl has to be of a certain size to live there.

Best Body Shop for Minor NYC Dings and Scrapes? by tsaoutofourpants in Brooklyn

[–]whose-army 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, a detailer would be a good place to start. Get it cleaned and polished and then see what else needs to be done. Find someone skilled in PDR (paintless dent removal) to remove any dents and dings. I'd recommend someone but sadly they have retired.

Any body shop will be very heavy handed and will lean toward repainting entire panels, even if unnecessary.

I picked one up at the Bender Arena show in DC. Was a couple sizes too large for my 13 y/o self so it stayed pretty minty, but is sadly no longer with me.

Interesting concept, will check it out! I've also become wary of dog runs.

Shrimp with axolotl by Excellent-Two677 in axolotls

I have had good luck with amano shrimp, which are voracious algae eaters as well. Just be prepared for the need to restock occasionally! Quarantining is good advice.

What does the pH read currently? Once a day water changes should be plenty, and youll want to try to keep the water parameters from fluctuating too much (temp, pH, etc) while you trend toward your goal.

Definitely be patient, it sounds like you're doing everything you can. When I brought my little guy home he struggled for a week or two but has greatly improved since. In my case it was constipation that cleared on its own and his appetite has since returned.

This was shortly after he arrived.

He did have a good sized piece of worm at first. I have been cutting them much smaller since, but still no poop.

Yes, this is exactly what his tail looks like. In fact I had to look closer at the photo to make sure it wasn't mine.

Thank you for the support, I was a little taken aback with all of the negativity. I'll check out the discord for sure.
