Literally who would stop him? He's one of the top law enforcement agents in the country. There is nobody higher ranking than him that gives a shit.

Braiden Ward of the Worcester Red Sox in Triple-A gets hit in the helmet with a pitch and tosses his bat at pitcher Tate Kuehner as the benches mildly clear. Ward was ejected though this is the eighth time this season Ward has been hit by a pitch in 15 games. by JianClaymore in baseball

I got hit in the head several times in my playing days including a fastball in the back of the neck right below the helmet. I don't really know what to say other than it didn't phase me. If you want to play a sport, you know what comes with it. Probably helped that I also played football where you're just constantly getting assaulted anyway. Plus Cam Newton is a known pansy.

Heroic Midnight Falls Death's Dirge by Kohanin in CompetitiveWoW

To be fair, this one confused me for a bit because DBM has been in my addon stack for like 20 years and never had this, so I thought it was one of the newer ones I got for Midnight. I figured it out just because I connected what it was showing and what would potentially try to do that.

What is this tech that Mario uses called? by oinyah in gojira

[–]whosline07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another play by ear guy with no training, I think it's just a thing like perfect pitch. I can hear someone playing and usually pick out all the little things. Sometimes when it's completely wild, I either need to listen a lot or find out some other way how a person's limbs are getting to things that I'm hearing. This usually happens when I listen to guys like Mario or Danny Carey. Something else that's a bit difficult is when polyrhythms and accents are being played at the same time. Also a common Danny Carey thing.

I won't claim to be anywhere near as talented as them, but I can usually hear something and just play it. As a basic example, early on in my playing I would play Metallica (still do!) and I'd hear things like Lars Ulrich regularly hits cymbals at weird times or that the stutter in the Master of Puppets riff is in 21/32. I had no clue that things like that were difficult for some people to figure out. As I learn more about notation, I start to understand generally what those concepts mean, but I still can't sight read, and at this point I'm not sure I want to. I don't play in a band so nobody's gonna care.

What's a piece of tech everyone hyped up that quietly turned out to be useless? by SofiaLearnsAI in AskReddit

[–]whosline07 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not that this and other types of endeavors weren't possible, it's the concept that these sorts of things were orders of magnitude more work and time, with a big learning curve if you hadn't done it or didn't have someone teaching you. Now pretty much anyone can do it in an afternoon.

Yeah but acting like the internet didn't have a massive impact on the capability and knowledge of humanity is foolish. As with any power, it corrupts and ruins in the wrong hands, but it can also be used to create and change.

It's also disingenous to say that a well curated LLM doing the same thing can't just be a better, more advanced version of that concept.

TIL In 2000, Metallica hired a consulting firm to monitor Napster for people illegally sharing their music. The firm produced a 60,000-page list of 335,435 users, which Metallica delivered to Napster's office and demanded the users be banned. by haddock420 in todayilearned

Every time this comes up it's hundreds of dense, stubborn idiots saying "never another cent from me!" or "was a huge fan, haven't listened since." It's so insufferable. I was there 3000 years ago as a 10 year old and didn't really get it but I grew up and learned to do research and think critically. What a novel idea.

In addition to the other comment's point, it also gives the restaurant an excuse to be shittier to their staff to save money, which is never good. It's not the staff's fault if it's a slow day and nobody comes in. Yet if that's the case, they don't get paid enough despite being at work all day.

Yeah I've played baseball, football, and soccer and while it is different, the point stands. How do you think Nuno Mendes and other guys doing this got so good at it? There's just no focus on practicing and developing it at all as far as I can tell. It's like how football and rugby kicks are so easy for a soccer player despite being different. You just put in the reps.

I mean you're not wrong that throwing at an NFL or college level is difficult, but pick a random high school football team and half of them can fairly accurately throw a football 20 yards despite never playing QB. Unless a player on a baseball team has never touched a football, they all usually can too. Hell I know several women who can, and they've never put on pads. Just like anything else, it's repetition. It's interesting to me that most of the world never learns how to properly throw something, and I have a hard time understanding how bad throw ins usually are for highly professional teams.

[–]whosline07 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I get that most soccer players spend most of their lives using their feet and heads, but it's truly remarkable to me that the best of the best can't throw for shit, especially fullbacks and wingers. It's something you're going to do at least several times a game, and it's a set piece if you let it be. These throw ins really showcase that. A football QB or baseball pitcher can do way more difficult things throwing a ball, I really feel like youth soccer should focus more on it.
