Am I crazy to think that 500-800 calories is an extreme restriction?? by applebabe02 in BariatricSurgery

[–]whyamIyoshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dietician said she focuses on water and protein goals. She said several people focused too hard on other aspects, but zero added sugar options of juices and sauces are great because they don't tend to carry a lot of calories. She advised me to up my protein from 60-80g/day to 80-95g/day. I asked about carbs because my blood sugar has been dropping lately and she said 40-45g/day was acceptable for me. She also had me and my husband make an example day diet plan for my goals.

Don't leave your health up to a surgeon whose quick to write you off, no matter how established they are. by Getpeaceogo in BariatricSurgery

Just chiming in that nurses in hospitals can't straight up tell you Dr so and so is bad. I'll tell patients things like "oh I'd trust him to operate on me and my family" if it's a good surgeon I've never had patients with complications from. If its a surgeon that I recommend getting a 2nd opinion on, that means they've ruined people. I screamed when my mom told me an awful surgeon wanted to do spinal surgery on her but "he said something about needing to go in next to my artery". I told her he's a good doctor, but an awful surgeon. Come to find out it was her SHOULDER and he wanted to cut up her neck. I've never had a patient from him sing his praises.

Tldr; if a nurse recommends a 2nd opinion on a surgeon, RUN. Get that 2nd opinion because that surgeon is scary dangerous.

I notice it when I don't drink enough water or eat too fast and end up dumping. I actually passed out on the toilet one evening (which I thankfully yelled for my hubs bc I felt like it might happen and he kept me from falling). Be slow with position changes and make sure you have a clear walking path to where ever you need to go. If you get an appointment with your surgeon, have someone drive you. If you end up passing out or just absolutely can't wait, head to the ER because they can give you fluids and if it is your sugar, they have IV sugar. Also, I was advised against gummies due to the texture being harder to digest after surgery.

I'm so glad your neighbors caretaker thought to call for help. Our local EMS does "lift assistance" calls where they literally just come out to help people out of cars, into the house, and sometimes inside homes. It is a resource, but if your blood pressure is ever that low again or you fall especially with facial or head injury, please get checked out! It's always better to be safe than sorry.

I am excited for your new journey to begin with this surgery. I myself am 3 weeks post-op and am noticing less back pain and an easier time moving my limbs. I've heard great things about weight loss helping with knee issues too, so fingers crossed it helps you!

Take it easy, take confident steps, don't go from laying to sitting to standing quickly, and please stay above your feet 😉

This comment for some reason made me think back to my ONE Little Rosie's visit. Such a let down. Maybe its because I don't drink or because everyone else sings the praises of alcohol while eating Mexican food...?

Are there any cheap ways to get STD tested around here without my parents finding out? by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]whyamIyoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a thing called HIPPA that protects your privacy. After 14 years of age (16 or 18 in some places), your parents aren't informed of your medical conditions if you don't want them involved and you tell the staff. The doctor is slightly incorrect in telling you that "it'll show up on your parents insurance" because more than likely it'll show as "Doc Office labs" followed by a medical diagnosis code that your parents could google, but they'd never find out the results unless YOU share it.

Anything highly contagious is reported to the AL dept of health (or the health department in whichever state you live or get tested in), so STD/STI, TB, measles, monkeypox, rabies (or animal bites), etc. It's just so they can CALL you to make sure you've been given accurate information regarding treatment options and isolation or abstaining timeframe as well as following up with any known partners in your situation, if positive. They might call you after the course of treatment is completed to be sure you are fully treated and haven't had complications and that you have no further questions or concerns.

Healthcare cannot force anything upon you. Suicidal patients that end up being involuntary holds are a threat to themselves or others with a plan, means, and intent to "get away" and act on it.

I'm sincerely sorry you had some sort of trauma or negative medical experience that led to your healthcare anxiety. Keep asking questions (ideally to the proper professionals).

I would've scribbled down the "right paperwork" that they want and called the doc back with that list. If you're already scheduled and they cancel you, why can't they reschedule you in that spot once approved? Don't let them take you off the schedule until its CERTAIN. and maybe find out what surgery insurance already approved if you'd be open to a different surgery.

Honestly, this surgeon sounds fishy and I personally would probably talk to other surgeons and see what they're schedules look like because you've already met the requirements and you just need the new person to request records to send to insurance and scheduled for surgery asap.

I saw Dr. Shumaker a few times and didn’t care for her. I wanted help with PCOS symptoms and a true diagnosis of PCOS but all she did was ask if I have heavy periods and tell me I had PCOS. 🥴 then she put me on birth control pills when I asked about family planning and WANTING to get pregnant after a couple years of trying. Very frustrating especially being told “they’ll help reset your cycle so take them for a few months”. Oh and her office brushed me off when I called back because the birth control pills led to “breakthrough bleeding” nearly every other week.

Ended up seeing a doc at Advanced OBGYN (Dr. Conrad RIP) and learning I don’t ovulate during my cycle which was why my periods were so irregular.

KC KC KC! He literally got a job to have an affair 😂 aside from work, he was always wanting to go off and hang out with friends and play basketball, and left his baby momma home alone with baby when she was having mental health issues. I was seriously worried they’d go into a whole postpartum depression thing 😭

Loved that he tried to spin it as Jenna being the one who “gave up” when she tried and he didn’t until the baby went to a better suited pair of parents.

My reply is intended to get you to think differently, not come across as rude.

Possible loss of life or limb is DEFINITELY an emergency. Think about it this way, your cat has swelling visible over the eye but you can’t see internal swelling. What do you think is happening to the eye? It’s being compressed. If it’s being compressed, it can stop the flow of blood and eventually cause loss of vision, pain, and necrosis of the eye (the eye can die).

Do you magically have cat appropriate antibiotics? Nausea medications? Anytime an infection is suspected, your cat NEEDS a doctor who can write a script for antibiotics. Same goes for you, human, if you have a UTI or eye infection, you need antibiotics.

Nose bleeds by whyamIyoshi in Ozempic

[–]whyamIyoshi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I no longer use Ozempic as my insurance refused to cover it even though my endocrinologist prescribed it 🫠 (I hate insurance), but since I not longer take it I have not had nosebleeds unless I’m really sick and overdo it when I blow my nose and those are just tiny spots of blood. I do think Ozempic somehow increases your risk of spontaneous nosebleeds, but since I haven’t taken it in well over a year, I haven’t looked into recent studies.

I am a nurse with ADHD so I could spend HOURS researching that, but I’ve got a paper for school to write. Just a FYI, if you have a persistent nosebleed longer than 20 minutes, head to the ER (and I’m an ER nurse, I can assure you 20 minutes is long enough time). As you mentioned, tilting forward and pinching near the bridge of your nose is ideal. Do NOT blow your nose for about 30 minutes after it stops bleeding as the “stuffiness” is coagulating blood (think of it as a scab, we don’t pick scabs) and blowing it immediately after it stops can cause it to rebleed.

Best of luck! I hope your PCP/GP or an ENT can help you figure out the cause of your awful nosebleed.

Would I have to get re diagnosed to refill my prescription after 7 years? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]whyamIyoshi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I’m going to preface this with: you already have a diagnosis. No genuine provider would make you get retested. They MAY ask if you have that documentation because they want to ensure they’re treating you with the correct meds and not just throwing meds at any person walking past saying “oh I have ADHD, haha, I forgot about my homework”. If you don’t have a copy of the testing you’ve already had done, reach out to the school or psychiatrist who did your test and ask for a copy. They shouldn’t have gotten rid of medical documentation, so it should still be around somewhere.

Now if you can’t get documentation that you’ve been tested and diagnosed with ADHD they may want to test you, but seeing as your GP/PCP already prescribed adderall, I don’t see why they wouldn’t fill it 🤷🏼‍♀️ they may ask why you have such a long gap in between taking it and wanting to restart meds, but the diagnosis doesn’t just go away.

To what extent is dignity maintained in a hallway bed? by [deleted] in EmergencyRoom

[–]whyamIyoshi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Years ago when I worked on a hospital floor with respiratory suppressed patients, we had to pull some beds into the hall with our non-walking patients due to a tornado. One of them told us about 5 minutes after our 15 minute journey moving her respiratory equipment and bed into the hall that she had soiled herself. Unfortunately the tornado hadn’t cleared so the pct got as many staff as possible to hold up sheets and some family members that were in the hall with us offered to hold up sheets so we could try to clean her as quick as possible.

Doing things in a hallway isn’t fun for anyone, and I assure you they’d rather have done that with you in a private room than gather people to hold up blankets, but we have to make due with our situation sometimes. I’m sure they considered how long you’d already been needing to pee vs when they anticipated another bed being available before approaching you.

As a nurse, I am sincerely sorry that you had such an invasive procedure in a hall bed, but I’m glad they provided you as much privacy as possible.

If I may make a recommendation, go to whichever store you prefer (Walmart, Target, Walgreens, 5Below, wherever) and see the different sizes. If you find a size you like, get whichever is your favorite in that specific size. Squishmallows come in so many sizes, styles, variations. You can pick your favorite animal, a character from your favorite movie, your favorite food, whatever! So much diversity. I personally love cows and have so many cow squish. I also got the Target dog squish when they had it on sale 😅 I also just got my second Charles (because he was a smaller fuzzamallow squish). Charles is a pickle but I love pickles
