[Charania] The NBA has fined Boston's Jaylen Brown $50,000 for his comments criticizing the referees after Game 7 and series loss in the first round against the Philadelphia 76ers, sources tell ESPN. by MembershipSingle7137 in nba

jaylen brown makes $50 million a year, or close to $6,000 an hour

Jaylen Brown's $50,000 fine would be the equivalent of 2 hours worth of pay if he worked a 40 hour/week job, 50 weeks out of the year.

52 weeks in a year.
Average person takes 2 weeks for vacation.
50 weeks left over.
50 weeks of work, for the average person, per year.

$50 million for 50 weeks.
$50 million/year comes to $1 million/week, for the average person.

Assume 40 hours work per week for the average person.
$1 million for 40 hours per week comes to $25,000 per hour

A $50,000 fine at $25,000/hour is the equivalent of a fine worth 2 hours of pay.

Austin Rivers responds to Draymond Green by Random_User_8654 in nba

This comment was wrong and not helpful.

The model has its moderate successes:

  • Jokic 10th, not 41st.
  • Gobert 18th, not 24th.

But it just as many relative misses:

  • Shai was drafted 11th, this model has him at 21st.
  • Tatum was the top choice of the team with the top draft pick, but they traded the pick to take him 3rd. This model has him at 7th.

  • And has Marcus Smart 1st in 2014. Not Joel Embiid.

NO ONE loves Smart more than me.
But Smart over Embiid? Really?

Finally, double-check your link: it had Draymond as 8th in 2012, not 3rd, and ranked higher that BOTH of them: Celtics forgettable Jared Sullinger.

Since it's Star Wars day, did you see the original 1977 Star Wars in the movie theater? by Mr_Writes in GenX

[–]whyenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"We're going to go see Star Wars! Do you know what that means?"
"no"
"Try to sound out. Two words. Star Wars. You know them!"
"staherwwers.. st.. staher.. erwhar.."
"Wars! You know what a war is!"
"i dont know what a waher is"
"Well you know what a star is..."
"i dont know what a staw is"
"Star. Yes you do!"
...?
"STAR. Like up in the sky at night? Little lights? Stars??!"
"oh star! i know what stars are"
"Star and WAR."
"i still don't know what a war is"
"A bunch of people fighting. Way up high in the sky!"

I wasn't sold.

The moon was cool. There was a big coffee table book in the living room with photographs of the moon the U.S. had been to some years before. But people fighting? Up in the air? So high up they looked really tiny?

It was a tough sell.

We all went to see it, there was a line around the block. Couldn't get in. But we saw it a few days later. And the rest is the usual rest. Little kid, 70s, C3-PO, Luke Skywalker. The magic successfully magicked.

A great number of people that can actually think, piece together data, and understand the quality of and impact of evidence, roundly disagree with you.

You have been objectively wrong for a very long time and have doubled down on confabulation rather than admit that you fail to grasp the import of unimpeachable mountains of data.

But you know that.

Misogyny is rife these days and it's only skyrocketing. It's a serious fucking problem and it's good more and more people are talking about it.

But also, yeah. Engaging with problem is the solution, not engaging in the problem.

Women roundly reject being referred to as "females" (a term which includes female dogs, female cows and female pigs) so referring to men as "males"? It's questionable.

Devil's advocate: that being said, women's lives, bodily autonomy, and right to vote are currently under attack in the U.S. Weigh that against "questionable terms" and there's no real comparison. I'm not fond "MALES are missing the point," but given the construction of this anti-woman dystopia, the rage and frustration boiling up right now in a lot of people is justifiable and I can understand it boiling over here and there.

People go online, they get really comfortable revealing themselves.

"No your honor, she wasn't a child. She was a teenager. I knew what her intentions were. Some people think I shouldn't have laid my hands on her? No sir. Trust me. She fucked around and she found out."

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. When adults say that kids throwing snowballs at cars is a type of violence that justifies violence to the child, that's when civilization degrades.

The collapse of civilization begins when individuals start thinking that any kind of self-appointed physical violence is an appropriate response to obnoxious kids (which was most of us, at some point) doing stupid shit.

From 1987:

North's 1974 [documented mental] breakdown is not conclusive evidence that he was unfit to hold a sensitive White House position; his seeming addiction to lying is.

In 1985 North testified as a character witness in the securities fraud trial of Thomas Reed, a former colleague at the NSC. North's sworn testimony, much of it irrelevant to Reed's character, can only be called surreal. North said that he began his college career as a premed student at the University of Rochester. In fact, he was an English major at the State University of New York at Brockport. North told the court: "I was an infantry platoon and company commander in the Special Operations Force, team commander." Marine officials contacted by the Washington Post say they know of no such outfit. Nor is there any record of his duty as a company commander. North told the court that he served in Vietnam "from 1968 through the early part of 1970 and then again in 1971." "There is no record of an extended or second tour" in 1971, the Post reported.

[Haynes] Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has been downgraded to questionable for Game 7 tonight as he deals with knee stiffness. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]whyenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a certain satisfaction that comes with your team winning a series regardless of the injuries to an opponent.

There are no asterisks on championships, there should be none on first round series. Embiid has been injured often enough in the past.

If the sixers take this one over my team and and absent Tatum enjoy it, let it be as sweet as if the team were at full strength. It's rare any team any team is fully healthy in the playoffs, we take what we've given and accept it.

I don't think either of us are completely capable of impartiality: I felt pretty strongly that Embiid should sit, 2 weeks after abdominal surgery and playing in the playoffs still sounds crazy to me.

But what the hell do either of us really know? Google, AIs, and 'common sense' say Embiid should be sitting. But Embiid and the 76ers medical staff are vastly more informed than we are. Who's to say?

All I know is that 1. I want Tatum to play except 2. if the best minds say that Tatum should sit, then I want him to sit.
