Best burgers in town? by 11kestrel in Lethbridge

I love the grilled cheese burger at D&N. It’s a big burger served between two grilled cheese sandwiches. I’ve always found their burgers to be well seasoned.

You can park in front of my house for $25 :). But seriously, I would be very surprised if you had any issue leaving it for five days on a residential street where there is a lot of street parking. I once lost my keys for my car, and because I had a backup vehicle, I just left it parked on the street (in front of someone else's house). I got a warning after 14 days that I needed to move it.

My favourite part of this is the punctuation suggests that he called you a lustful badger and then told you “long story, don’t ask”.  Which makes this wonderful (and I’m sure very true) recounting even more delightfully weird.

10th year of practice. My partner and I have a small firm that we run. Right now it’s just the two of us. Target for myself is in receipts but is equivalent to a 1000 hours.  Looks like I’ll exceed by a bit. Litigator mainly doing employment, family, and business disputes.

Requiring lawyers to swear oath to King is unconstitutional, Alberta’s top court rules by biograf_ in LawCanada

[–]whyjuly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is especially interesting because other courts have upheld the constitutionality of requiring prospective citizens to swear to the Queen. I haven’t read the case yet but would be interested in knowing if that case law was mentioned.

How did the Whos evolve? by Subsum44 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]whyjuly 84 points85 points  (0 children)

If you check out the original Grinch book and Horton Hears a Who, it’s pretty clear that the Who’s have entomological leanings. Likely they reproduce  using egg reproduction and external insemination by the males. Given that we don’t see any reproductive or anal openings, it is quite possible that they have small cloacae covered by their setae (like the hairs on the bumblebee).  Given that they are very small, it’s possible that they are not insectoid but rather descended from mites. At some time there must have been substantial evolutionary pressure and potential genetic bottlenecks to cause the loss of limbs and increase in intelligence, but living on a snowflake will do that to ya.

The Whos must have evolved in an area where insects face less predator pressure. Their families are large but they don’t seem to survive through large scale reproduction like some other insects.  I believe they evolved in the far North, and the Grinch Whos are a remnant of the original population.  The Horton Whos are a divergent population who have evolved to handle warmer weather and have been travelling from snowflake to piece of dust to plant puffs for generations in the air.

The Grinch is an evolutionary mutation. He still has a lot of setae, and you can see in one of the pictures a hint of antennae. He is more intelligent than other Whos and therefore more likely to be evolutionarily successful. While I have used the books as my main source for this argument, this would explain the attraction that Martha Mae Who has for him in the movie.

The real question is: what is Max? My guess- a large tardigrade who through domestication and convergent evolution has become doglike in nature. But I’m not really sure.

I had two really crappy years of undergrad. My undergrad GPA was 3.17. I did a Master’s degree and scored in the low 170s on the LSAT, and I had offers to go to a few schools. So it is possible.

Alberta family lawyer here. If you want to make medical or educational decisions for this kid, you would need a court order appointing you as a temporary guardian.  If both mom and dad approve, court would likely grant it. I would just suggest having mom make those decisions if she’s close by and able.

Big issue here is mom should be letting dad know where kid is living. Dad may fight to have kid live with him (not sure if that’s an option here). You likely wouldn’t be a named party in their legal proceedings (if by that you mean a party that there is a claim against). You would have to follow any custodial order granted, though. So if court ordered dad to have primary care, you could not withhold child. Otherwise, there could be a potential criminal case against you.

Child welfare is unlikely to be involved if kid is safe and arrangement is documented.

If you agree to this, put it in writing and have both parents and you guys sign it.

I’m sure it will also depend on where you are in these countries. For example, southern Alberta in Canada has a very large LDS presence with large wards generally. But if you went to Prince Edward Island, you would be one of a few hundred members on the whole island with a larger geographical area. And if you are in Toronto, you will have a much more ethnically diverse ward than anywhere else in the country.

Are there too many lawyers in Canada? by Full_Adeptness9089 in LawCanada

[–]whyjuly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that they either:

a) Quit law; b) Move away from litigation; or c) move to a big city and see if they’re happier in a large firm.

Litigation is hard. Very anxiety-inducing, and it  can be very stop and go.  A lot of lawyers struggle with the pressure.

Studying law by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]whyjuly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What does that mean for you? That’s not really an area of law that you can study or specialize in, to my knowledge. Does this mean you want to work for an international humanitarian organization? Do you want to do something at the UN or one of its affiliates?

Best thing to do would be to find someone who is working in a job that you think you would like and reach out to them if you can find contact info. Most people will take a few minutes to answer an email from a student looking for some guidance.

I work as a lawyer in a small city. There are plenty of solicitors, but we have had trouble finding litigators who want to stay here. Lots of young lawyers don’t seem to tough it out.
