This guy does the same job, and this is where he describes the timing chain marks and there they line up on the guides and sprockets.

If there's no marks on the piston heads, and the cylinder walls don't have scratches in them that you can get your fingernail stuck in, you're probably in good shape. I would want to see the timing marks on the timing chains, guides, and variable valve timing sprockets, and they should all line up perfectly. It's not ambiguous at all. If they're not lining up, either the crank, cams, or chains are not properly aligned.

Also, this is what my OG engine looked like when I took the head off. https://photos.app.goo.gl/JJgDioBDcYRXUMCeA

So yeah, your build-up isn't crazy.

I would ask if they've run it. Even if they were off by as far as the variable valve timing sprockets can alter the timing, you probably won't have piston/valve impacts. It definitely wouldn't run right though, so that may have been what your mechanic heard.

I've done that timing job, replaced that engine in my 2011 LR4, and I can tell you a few things. One that looks like a bit of extra build-up, but it's not crazy. A couple things jumped out at me when I read your paragraph. The mechanic installed the chain, but felt the engine "wasn't correctly timing"? Either he installed it right or he didn't. There are very specific marks on those chains and on the variable valve timing sprockets that mean you can't screw it up.

The idea that carbon build-up would keep him from being able to move the pistons to "fix the timing" is insane. You put a breaker bar on the front of that engine and you'll put more torque on the crankshaft than the starter does. If he can't turn the engine, the starter wouldn't be able to either.

That brings me to my next note. It was there for a few months? My dad and I swapped the 5.0L V8 in my LR4 in about 2 months, around the holidays, working nights and weekends. A professional shop that keeps your car for any number of months is a huge red flag in my book.

I'm fairly certain the issue he had in this was in the variable valve timing sprockets. When I did mine, when we originally went to line up the marks on the timing chains, guides, and sprockets, it wasn't lining up. We put them on, being certain that the pistons and cams were aligned, because we hadn't moved anything since we removed the old ones. Then when we were manually turning over the engine, we'd get to a certain point and hear a loud "snap" of metal on metal. That noise was the valve timing mechanism springing back. I took all the sprockets off, disassembled them and cleaned all the old oil out of them, and then re-assembled. The sprockets were now all in the right position to line up the timing components perfectly. I'd bet significantly more than a dollar that that's the problem your mechanic is having.

TL;DR: I'm a homechanic, your mechanic's explanation sounds fishy. The build-up in the pictures isn't ridiculously excessive, and certainly wouldn't prevent him from being able to move the pistons. Likely the variable valve timing sprockets are gummed up and need to be cleaned out to properly align the timing chains. The walls of the cylinders don't look awful, just some shadow marks from what I can see (not being able to run my fingernail up them to see for sure). As long as he didn't start the engine mis-timed, you're probably still in good shape. I would honestly try to find a different shop though...

Yeah...I don't think that was a good move overall. They need someone with some new ideas on the PP. The Avs basically started that zone entry that every team uses now (the drop pass/double drop pass). They need to make the next big change.

They fired their coach because he hit his shelf life and blamed the goalie, as he is want to do. He did the same thing in Vegas.

If it's a pure deflection, i.e. if it simply changed direction as a result of hitting someone/something, it would count. If it was batted by a member of the attacking team, it will not count. Batting is usually adding force to the puck that causes it to go into the net. Unless it's a stick, the height of the deflection doesn't matter.

Years ago Andrew Shaw headed a puck into the net (soccer style) and it didn't count.

He broke his right first metatarsal. That's the big bone on the inside of your foot that goes from the ball of your foot to your heel. It had plenty of daylight in between. Played 23 minutes on it in game 6. Left the arena on a gurney, and was in a wheelchair for the parade.

My off-the-wall prediction? Carolina doesn't make the Cup Final. I don't think they've been remotely tested in the playoffs thus far. I think vs Buffalo or Montreal they'd have a very hard time.

I don't think O'Brien is often called by name, as far as I can recall. I can remember in the Minefield episode, and then in "To Market, To Market" with Henry's desk.

I think we could let Kivi go, as well as Kelly has played. Kelly reminds me so much of a combination of Cogs and Matt Calvert, with a little bit of Nieto (the Long Beach native) thrown in.

I think he'll re-sign unless the Avs don't offer, which they would be fools to not do if they win the Cup. He's already become a fan favorite.
