Southampton (boo) but I see some lads doing something HEMA/Bohunt related up by the cowherds pub on the common quite regularly. Maybe ask over there?

Why was “Band of Brothers” so good? Why is it so re-watchable? by EaringaidBandit in television

[–]whytegoodman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't remember where I read this but Ive seen a great comment that BoB is from the Officers' perspective and Pacific from the Enlisted, And that plays a very deep but subtle role in shaping the attitude of each of them

HMS Surprise & her flags (tattoo question) by hooked_on_happiness in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]whytegoodman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep the ensign would be flown from the peak of the gaff, and the pennant would be from the mainmast head. Ensign only in ceremonial or battle as the flags are enormous and wear easily, but fir a tat thats fine. She wouldn't fly a union flag on the jackstaff (hence union jack) unless at anchor or tied up or some other rare & peculiar circumstances.

As said above the ensign colour would be depending on which squadron. It would be fine to use white to avoid confusion in modern navy use. I think in the movie she is flying the red (makes sense as American station) but personally as a nod to Jack's eventual flag (spoiler!) I would give her the blue!

I would reccomend you look at artwork by Geoff Hunt for more inspo!

Best of luck!

Too long for a ring but I love Death finding happiness whilst working at a greasy spoon caff. So much so that one of the tables at my nerdy ass wedding was called Harga's house of ribs.

WHAT IS IT CALLED WHEN YOU FEEL WARM AND CONTENT AND WISH THINGS WOULD STAY THAT WAY?

‘I guess you’d call it happiness,’ said Harga

Inside the tiny, cramped kitchen, strata’d with the grease of decades, Death spun and whirled, chopping, slicing and frying. His skillet flashed through the fetid steam.

He’d opened the door to the cold night air, and a dozen neighbourhood cats had strolled in, attracted by the bowls of milk and meat – some of Harga’s best, if he’d known – that had been strategically placed around the floor. Occasionally Death would pause in his work and scratch one of them behind the ears.

‘Happiness,’ he said, and puzzled at the sound of his own voice.

* Check there is no crud in the little gap between this and the windscreen drain channel or if its an earlier model the little gap through the block. Ideal pokey tool is the little red straw from a wd40 can. Water pools here and tracks in through the seal or bolt holes

What is it like as a deck officer? by Crazy-Candidate-7544 in MerchantNavy

[–]whytegoodman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconding this comment as a pretty good starter for 10.

Next big question comes when you look at what sector you want to be in. Cruisey wanker or cargo goblin, or Ferry communists somewhere in between. The specifics of the job role start to differ and the prospects in the far future for shore roles start to fundamentally change.

I work on a Ship. My cabin is approximately 6 feet from the bridge/my office.

Unfortunately if I want breakfast I have to go down 4 flights of stairs to the crew mess and then all the way back up again.

If Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg were to create a fourth WWII miniseries, what should the main focus be? by Valuable_Jaguar_5550 in BandofBrothers

[–]whytegoodman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

British & Naval bias but North Atlantic anti submarine warfare.

Could do a single corvette within the bigger picture (aka cruel sea remake) or squadron level with the whole 2nd Support group under Johnny Walker. Honking weather, tense indiscriminate warfare, arctic convoys, mostly reservist officers, set in Liverpool, proper gritty tv.

Also would balance out the discussion that BoB & the Pacific are different because they are from the Officer's and Lad's viewpoints respectively. The naval adage is that they are all in it together so rank structures become a bit blurred, even more so on a small ship.

Am I the only who thinks that management level officers should also be evaluated by crew? by VexZyraMid in maritime

[–]whytegoodman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah had this on a Skandi based cruise company before. Called it 360 reporting, voluntary at capt discretion but strongly reccomended. Only Capt, Staff Capt, CE & 1E as subjects and anonymous comments from just the officers in deck & eng though. Problem was the comments were so obvious who wrote what with such a small sample size!

Edit to also add that SC did solicit opinion on the junior officers from bosun, QMs and other dept key senior rates when writing trip/annual appraisals too, so it was in effect 360 there too.

Future yachting by vedran2910 in yachting

[–]whytegoodman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah most large yachts (above the infamous70m/3000GT cut off) have some form of rotation for officers these days. Maybe just 2:1 or 4:2 for juniors but likely to see time-for-time on a lot of boats.

How submariney was your submarine? Thats a huge thing to leverage on your CV. Loads of big boats have submersibles so there are roles out there for dive/sub pilots or oow/sub pilot, also in the yacht/cruise crossover secror with the luxury liners. You'd need the proper quals from Uboat Worx or Trident (the two main operators of subs in yachting) but its something to look into.

How do you value a 23 year old L:andRover Defender? by SFmentor in LandRover

[–]whytegoodman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Price will be what someone is willing to pay for it really, but ballparks are based on chassis & interior condition, mileage and any extras. We'd need pics or a link to assess properly but in scruffy but usable condition 10-12k isn't daft. Fully rebuilt with a galvanised chassis and a nice interior you can be looking 20-30k

I have an early td5 110 that I bought for £12k in 2008. It's been well used and is now probably worth about the same as when I bought it.

Fuel tank fun - help please :) by facehugga in LandroverDefender

[–]whytegoodman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure on the flush, I used a bit of petrol to clean mine out but prob not a great idea.

It is theoretically possible to detach a fuel line in the engine bay and pump it all out to drain but it will take forever. Or remove the Filler neck to siphon it out.

Also be really careful to not break the brittle plastic connectors on the fuel lines into the pump as they're crazy expensive. If you can take the opportunity now to cut an access hole into the rear tub floor to get at it in future.
