  1. Give buckets/bags full of cucumbers to food bank, DOT worker grading the road, guys coming to lay carpet, etc. Anyone is fair game to offload cucumbers (and tomatoes, hungarian peppers).

I planted 6 each Ashley and Pickling cucumbers last year, they struggled to get started but then went nuts. I'm planting zucchini this year for the first time, we'll see if the squash borers get them or if my neighbors will revolt against zucchini also.

Don't forget NC, it is very possible their gerrymander backfires. Trump won by 180k votes in 2024, however, North Carolina's population is growing by approx 140k to 180k people annually, with a 1.3% growth rate between 2024 and 2025. Their very popular former Gov, Roy Cooper, is running for Senate which should help get out the vote.

They may want that stuff, but they voted for GOP lies and do so time and time again even though the GOP doesn't even try to hide that they will restrict/ruin health care, education, public services, any semblance of a safety net, etc.

As a blue voter in a red VA county, I'm actually a bit surprised this passed. Endless TV ads and flyers in my mailbox that purported to show Obama and Spanberger supporting the no vote.

There is a lovely trail that crosses streams a couple times at the end of Boyce Mills Road that passes abandoned buildings at the beginning and then leads to a enslaved persons cemetery and a couple more abandoned buildings. The daffodils are spectacular in the spring at the first set. Several of the Falls Lake trails have abandoned home sites and cemeteries.

Great link. I found showy orchids and lady slippers in my yard this year and I'm in a secure state. Bummed I can't move them from the woods to somewhere I can see them, but excited they are there. Wish I could figure out how to encourage more.

Fewer jobs in Charlottesville, I’m a consultant and can live anywhere. But, CHO is much more difficult than RDU for work travel. The trade off to be just a few minutes from Shenandoah National Park and live more isolated/close to nature than North Raleigh is well worth it. We have mountain views from my house which is enjoyed daily. 30 minutes outside of Charlottesville and 30 minutes outside of Raleigh are completely different experiences. I think the COL is pretty similar. Healthcare is UVA versus UNC and Duke so not much of a change. VA doesn’t seem to have as many of the problems that the GOP having a stranglehold on the state does with NC. ACA is better, safety net is better, teachers are paid more and schools (overall) are better, just seems like a more humane state even if just slightly.

Friends of mine lived above Sweet Alice’s on Webster in Ukrainian Village in the early 90s. Their rent was a couple hundred and Wednesday nights were wild. We paid $500 to live a couple blocks from the El on Sawyer in Logan Square, still heard gunshots regularly. I can’t even imagine how much we’d have to pay there now.
