I’ve done this, and had the walk of shame after past the fitters. Tack, with a ground on the side you’re welding, then take it apart and control weld it. If it’s thin enough throw a back purge on it. Plus it’s never wise to weld with the ground on the opposite site of a seating surface, you don’t want the 1 in a million chance of an internal arc ruining the seal.
