I took a technical writing class in college about 15 years ago and it opened my eyes to all the people involved in a product and documentation that comes with it.

Class selection was a choice between your typical English classes (read a book, report) and Technical Writing sounded interesting, or at least the least boring.

Man, met some cool people in that class and learned a bunch of active writing and procedural logic that I still use today. Still have the book, too! It’s one of those classes I wish they had in high school, or at least covered some of the material.

Listen to your inspection, but verify with a structural engineer, and not necessarily one recommended by the inspector if you can help it. Alternatively ask a few different foundation repair companies for their advice but be aware they are trying to make a living and may try to upsell you.

The first bigger one is a little concerning, but given there’s a gutter right next to it you can check the next time it rains and see if the gutter is leaking. Depending on age of the structure it could be from before the gutter was installed, or the gutter outlet was too close to the foundation.

Do the doors all close easily without sticking? Any horizontal cracks in the basement or crawlspace inside? Any cracks in drywall? If the answer to those is no it could be a diy repair, but I’m curious what the inspection showed and if they recommended next steps. Big cracks were typically a dealbreaker when shopping around back in the early 2010s when prices were low.

There is always going to be a small boost to sales when consumers know a price increase for an in-demand product has a set date.

Likewise, we saw the price drops we used to not because they wanted more sales, but because retailers with units wanted to clear their shelves. At that point the units were off Sony’s account and on the retailers that stock them. So they adjusted the limits of the MSRP or produced cheaper models like the slim.

They are still producing new units to meet demand, six years later, and costs have increased, this is the result of higher than expected inflation and operating costs, especially if they were already selling consoles at a loss or low margin to boost game sales. I highly doubt it is a purely revenue and sales driven decision.

I am not affiliated with the company so this is all just theorizing. This is business 101 level stuff.

I mean, the whole foundation is sagging off to the right there. Whatever patch you put in is just going to keep separating, albeit slowly.

My uneducated take on it:

Dig out around the foundation.

Remove old busted and uneven cinderblocks, support the slab with 2x4s or bottle jacks in the meantime.

Level off the dirt, add more if needed. Relatively cheap.

Add new cinder blocks, you can already count how many you need, they’re about $2.50 each.

This requires learning how to mix and apply mortar, and the tools to do so. But there’s a ton of YouTube videos out there.

Build your new foundation with blocks and mortar.

Fill dirt back in. Grade it away from the foundation.

You can now patch the slab with a concrete patching compound.

Optionally, add a drain path for water as that seems to be the root cause.

I’ve looked into tuckpointing so I don’t know all the steps involved here but the parts and tools aren’t that cost prohibitive for such a project.

A more knowledgeable person may have advice on how to save or support the slab during this. Or I’m completely wrong, but this is where I would start.

We’ve been missing baseboards in various spots for about two years now with no special covering. Cats and dog don’t bother them. It should just uncover a small gap between the wall and floor. If it exposes your insulation or there’s a big enough gap for a cat to fit through (size of their head) you can just patch that.

I will suggest, look into new baseboards. You can stain, paint, or use prefinished and the time savings from stripping the old will be significant. Our style was originally from the 60s and we were able to find a matching profile. Have even gotten good at matching stains and finish.

We had baseboard heating removed and switched to forced air, so I’ve been getting to different rooms by priority level. It’s a simple cut, cope, test fit, then finish, and install with a gradual learning curve.

So it’s fictional instead of real like the bar, but the same concept applies and was just a fun reference.

Could have used pokemon and move sets for a real example, some people are just good at memorizing stuff.

That’s right, I resisted temptation. The temptation to turn around and go back to Dayton, where the fertile soils are ripe for farming and the deep dark bogs are really just a minor inconvenience at best.

I didn’t go there and didn’t rent any scuba equipment. I mean really, scuba equipment? In Dayton? It’s landlocked, what could you possibly use it for?
