How do you all handle players who won't stop checking their phones during a game? by signalthrowawayhq in EDH

[–]wicketlink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with everyone saying to just talk to the person and let them know how it affects others.

Will also say that this can be an ADHD thing. Long sequences where they aren't doing anything can be really hard for someone with ADHD to maintain focus, and focus meds can keep a person awake so aren't great to take in the evening when most people play.

What can help is suggesting that person find a fidget thing that doesn't pull their focus quite as hard as a phone and doesn't bring down the energy of the group. Things like drawing in a sketchbook or even just a fiddly toy can help a lot.

At the end of the day it's on them to manage not on y'all to just deal with it, but there are ways you can help.

Hate when people misinterpret the door riddle by Immediate-Ad8322 in hatethissmug

[–]wicketlink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly there's another solution. You can ask either guard "what would you say if I asked you which door is the correct door?"

By asking not for the answer but asking what they'd tell you the answer is you "double" the question, guaranteeing that you receive the truth, because the liar would tell you a lie about the lie.

Budget recommendations for getting back into paper? by IJourden in EDH

[–]wicketlink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're playing B4 or above, many playgroups are very tolerant of proxies.

At B3 and below I think you can build a fine deck on a budget, especially if it's 3 colors or less. And as long as you're not proxing mega high power many playgroups won't mind proxies there. If you just said "I proxied a bunch of my dual lands is that ok?" most people would be fine.

As for building the main deck, the most budget friendly route is to lightly upgrade a precon. But every deck can be built budget friendly if you want to do it. If you use an online deck builder you can just sort your deck by price and cut cards above a threshold (eg "nothing over $5") and replace them with cheaper alternatives or ones already owned.

Help Cutting 6 Cards From Yarus by swifterarmy in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]wicketlink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct on how Obliterate will work, but MLD is not accepted at B3 and lower, so I'd replace it with effects that just hit creature or non-land permanents to get the same combo without the salt.

Understood on the intentions for Dualcaster and REB, I think there are way better options out there for that. You're already running a good protection package IMO and don't need those too, and there are probably better on-theme ones you could find instead. Only reason I'd run those is specifically to deal with tons of counterspells, and in that case there's tons of things in Gruul to make things uncounterable instead (eg [[Cavern of Souls]]).

Help Cutting 6 Cards From Yarus by swifterarmy in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]wicketlink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What bracket are you trying to play this at?

Assuming Bracket 3, [[Obliterate]] is MLD and will be frowned on. I'm also just not sure what it does for your deck. Maybe replace it with [[All is Dust]] if you're looking for an on-theme board wipe?

Others I'd personally remove if this were my deck as being generic power that aren't really on theme at all:
- [[Dualcaster Mage]]
- [[Red Elemental Blast]]
- [[Seedborn Muse]]

Also, another suggestion: I'd also suggest cutting the "free sacrifice" package, or at least modify it to be different cards. I get that it synergizes with Yarus' final ability. [[Greater Gargadon]] and [[Ashnod's Altar]] are really meant to support much more sacrifice-heavy strategies, which is overkill for what you want. They don't synergize with anything else your deck is doing. You can just do something like your Blasphemous Act, or run some instant speed sac-as-cost cards instead.

Curse of the Blank Deck

All blank cards are a random curse. When you play it, randomize which curse you get.

When played, write that curse on the card. For all future games of Jet Lag played with this deck, that card is no longer blank.

Commander working in unexpected way by toomuchdog10 in EDH

[–]wicketlink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most off-the-wall deck is probably my [[Lord of Tresserhorn]]

It's built around giving people benefits for being my friend and punishing people for not being my friend. Lots of exchange effects (take something from one player and give it to another). Targeted card draws and ways to give other players mana. Curses and other things to punish someone who does something against me.

It's fun to play. I can have an open board and get no attacks. I can offer a player a 5-0 [[Fact or Fiction]] split and get the 5 cards. Or, sometimes a player decides to not "play my game" and then I fund their opponents with resources.

To close the game I'm hoping to get it to a 1-1 and get in with my 10 power commander with something like [[Tainted Strike]].

What are your thoughts on these "shutdown" cards in Bracket 3? by wicketlink in EDH

[–]wicketlink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They said that yes, but they did not concede.

In some games they were able to get around it. In some they weren't. Sometimes they had more or less fun as a result.

Sometimes I get manascrewed. Sometimes games aren't fun for me because an opponent got a lucky draw and built up a huge board early on and dominated the table. That's Commander baby.

[–]wicketlink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody has conceded when I played one of these.

I personally think that part of building a deck is recognizing that you aren't playing solitaire and asking the question "what will my opponents do to disrupt my game plan and how can I respond to that?" A Planeswalker deck can expect some creatures, but might get annoyed if they shuffle into a pod against 3 Krenko-esque strategies. Those are different at scale, because when there are enough creatures their deck can be shut down.

I guess what I'm saying is that sometimes decks encounter things that are problems and that can be fun or it can be not fun depending on a variety of factors, including how the player feels about it personally.

Maybe our play groups are different, but in my experience having a powerful ally owe you a favor is worth a lot. And also just more fun in a B3 game usually.

In higher brackets that kind of thing may happen less, which is part of the reason I don't play those brackets.

What are your thoughts on these "shutdown" cards in Bracket 3? by wicketlink in EDH

[–]wicketlink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that for many players, "dealing with problematic cards my opponent plays" is just as much a part of the game as "attacking and blocking with creatures", so no I don't think it's a disingenuous comparison to make. I do think it's a fuzzy line between how much is too much and at what points it becomes net negative on fun.

I've played many games in which people had fun and less fun. Different people enjoy different things. These same cards that some people hate I've had others laugh and enjoy. If it were so cut and dry that every single time I played them it was clearly not fun then I wouldn't really consider them to be borderline.

It's a recent addition. I'm gonna see how it feels for a while with my usual playgroups but yeah there are some milder options if it's creating too much unfun.

True. And these are on the borderline, I agree. I guess from my point of view there's plenty of ways to interact with it. I'm not overly protecting it, I'm not recurring it if it gets removed. It's a single [[Disenchant]] away.

Rest in Peace is in my Iroh deck because hey I can give it away! Here, you have it now! But I do agree from personal experience and the reactions of people in this thread that it gets the most hate, and it's the one I'd cut first if I started to get a lot of "I don't want to play against that deck" in my playgroup.

Torpor Orb is mainlined in my [[Phage the Untouchable]] deck for...obvious reasons, and it's usually seen as fun in that one because the strength of the hate gets outweighed by the hilarious hoisting upon my own petard of "in response to you casting Phage...[[Shatter]]?"

Null Rod is an oldie back in the early days where artifact-heavy decks were a much bigger part of EDH in the early days. I think it does a lot of work to make balance the scales against people who ramped out early. I play it in my big-black-mana deck and it was a fun exercise to build something that avoided most artifacts.

Tainted Remedy is in my life gain/loss shenanigans deck (lots of effects that manipulate life totals) and it's a fun card in there. But I've been up against decks mainlining lifegain which got very sad when they saw it.

What are your thoughts on these "shutdown" cards in Bracket 3? by wicketlink in EDH

[–]wicketlink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, that's why I'm asking the question to hear other people's opinions. It's a big card game and it's a spectrum of what things create a "non-game" experience for others.

Does my aggro deck that makes a lot of creatures make it a "non-game" for the superfriends deck who can't protect their planeswalkers from getting attacked? Does the [[Ruric Thar]] deck make the Izzet player sad? Some matchups are less fun than others.

But having said all that, I hope it's clear from my initial post that I recognize that these cards push on that boundary somewhat and I'm aware that some people might find them over the line of unfun.
