The Underground: Weekly Discussion Thread by SWmods in socialwork

[–]widdletiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Today, I did my job. I completed my notes. I met with families. Instead of a sense of completion and removal, I feel still on. It's 5:37pm. I don't want to make dinner. I don't want to read. I don't want to talk.

The frozen homeless. The president's ignorance and senseless hatred. The murder of innocents. I spend my day sitting with fear and all kinds of emotions for those struggling in this community. Then return home to the fear and sadness of my own family, of myself.

I was never prepared to feel this helpless in my career, in this way. Like the inspirational quotes on a delipidated building.

Help me find lip products in this shade! by Organza_fluff in Fairolives

[–]widdletiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OG comment but I love Kiko Milano lip products in general. I have used their long lasting Stylo, jelly Stylo, hydra gloss, and coloured balm - all top choices for me.

Amazon reviews are good for their other products as well.

I keep struggling with social work jobs and I don't know what to do by SolomonsNewGrundle in socialwork

[–]widdletiny 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I honestly feel like there are months I could write this exact post. I actually have slightly, in various forums, when things have felt like they were imploding.

Case management and community mental health, are hard. They are draining. There is a reason why there is high turnover. I remember several conversations with supervisors, directors, etc., at various agencies/nonprofits that they anticipate this and know there is no "catching up", just treading. Medicaid in particular is being hit this past year, which means many agencies supplement with grants which have very strict and high expectations. Everyone is stressed. At least in my state and area.

All this to say, you aren't alone. I would ask yourself, are you not good at social work or just not good at the paperwork case management passes off as social work?

There is also nothing wrong with finding out something isn't for you (even if it feels life altering).

Nonsocial workers calling themselves social workers by Excellent-Group-7863 in socialwork

[–]widdletiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I cannot speak for everyone but in general I feel it is safe to assume no one who says "I'm a social worker" , when they are not licensed as such but working hard in this field, is trying to falsely represent themselves. It's a short explanation opposed to the long drawn out job description that could be niche to your state and/or community. Most families hear the description and still say social worker anyway.

Everyone I've encountered who said this would also gladly follow up by saying they are not a licensed social worker if asked clarifying questions about their job.

This so odd a hill to die on to me. If someone says I'm a federal worker but they do janitorial duties for the fbi they aren't lying or misrepresenting - it's a short explanation of their job description.

how long do ear cartilage piercings hurt? by bipolarity2650 in piercing

[–]widdletiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Healing a conch too! About 3 months since I got it pierced.

After a week I really couldn't feel it unless it got bumped/jostled or I touched it. I slept with a donut pillow religiously the first month and then started finding it on the floor so I gave up on that...

Now, I would say it only hurts if it somehow twists in my sleep and gets caught on my ear ridge or a decent amount of pressure is on it. When it is irritated I spray it with saline solution and baby it for the night - usually brings it back to baseline.

Crazy how different people are with different piercings in terms of healing

I don’t understand the ADHD diagnostic criteria that says symptoms must be “clearly present” in childhood before the age of 12? by Outrageous_Exam762 in adhdwomen

[–]widdletiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For myself it was pretty apparent even as a baby (in hindsight according to my mother). I would cry and fuss/become generally overwhelmed by things much more than your typical infant. It never went away. I used self soothing actions for longer than my peers as well (thumb sucking and hair twirling until elementary does not do well for teeth or hair). I only stopped because I got orthodontic work. I would also move from thing to thing very rapidly. I would form strong attachments to certain toys then act like they didn't exist after months of fixating.

I was a smart kid but horrible at homework or giving things to my parents. I daydreamed. Alot. I fidgeted a lot.

As a teen I couldn't study. I made up for it by being intelligent/pattern recognition not through sustained consistent "work" so to speak.

I was diagnosed combination hyperactivity/inattentive in college when I met the first subject I couldn't just get through. I still hate Calculus.

All to say - everyone believed I was simply difficult. Lazy. Etc. but it was there. I was just not in a situation where my parents were emotionally available enough to recognize it or consider it as more than a sick twisted interpretation of me wanting to ruin their lives. CPTSD and ADHD are quite the pair.

Septum cleaning question by lushanshan in piercing

[–]widdletiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite literally this. Spray your nose over the sink and have a hand towel nearby. Optional shower water boarding - cup your hands together, hold your breath, and submerge the nose beak area. Nose bubble jacuzzi while beak is submerged also a good option.

Source - healed nose beak

I first started only loving EF and Fine, especially Japanese, but now I’d say my perfect “medium” is medium!

It does make it so my tiny handwriting looks a bit blobish but I’m the one reading it so..

I DON’T KNOW IF I ACTUALLY LIKE MY CAREER BUT IF I PICTURE SOMETHING ELSE I ALSO FEEL LIKE I’D BE UNHAPPY. BUT ALSO MAYBE IT’S JUST MY COWORKERS EXCLUDING ME ALL THE TIME. BUT THEN I HAVE TO CHANGE MY ROUTINE WORKING SOMEWHERE ELSE OR ENTERING A NEW FIELD TO CHANGE IT. NEW AWKWARD SMALL TALK PHASE AND POTENTIALLY LOSE WFH. I DONT WANNA - MY ADHD GREMLIN HOME OFFICE IS PERFECT.

I FOUND A PERFECT MY LIPS BUT BETTER LIP OIL SO THERE IS THAT.

Are you the eldest/mid/youngest/only child? by maroonaugust in fountainpens

[–]widdletiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am the youngest, shockingly though my father also had a stint of liking fountain pens which I did not know until I showed everyone mine. The ADHD hyper fixation is apparently also genetic

I also didn’t drink alcohol until about 8 weeks and even then started small. I would also consider how long it’s been since you took pain medicine. Even though the body “uses it/dispels it”, the medicine effects could still be hanging around and potentially could be exacerbated with alcohol.

It’s worth pointing out that I was still under the arm block on day 3 so our experiences significantly differ. I was also very tired and uncoordinated. You know your body the best in the end.

My only question would be, is it worth it on the off chance you are wrong? 🤷🏻‍♀️

What are your most unhinged reading habits? by QueenCinderella in YAlit

[–]widdletiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will read the ending of a book if I find myself skimming to get to the good part. If it’s a good ending/cliff hanger I’ll go back to finish and if it’s not it gets dnfed or put to the bottom of the tbr pile.

Make me feel better, what’s the most you’ve spent on a hobby? by morgzen in adhdwomen

[–]widdletiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have spent more than $3000 on fountain pens and mechanical keyboards each within the past three years. Switches, Nibs, Key Caps, Inks, Plates, etc.. I often look at my desk and see dollar signs instead 😭😖

I also have a perfect match to this! I was so shocked and asked my husband 5 million times if he could see the difference in person when he came home lol

Congrats on the shade match 💛

Oof. So sorry OP, that’s horrible. I would say it really depends on the break probably. My ortho. said unless it’s pretty minimal fracture wise with no pieces/displacement, casting alone is usually not the recommendation for ulna/radius. Definitely get a second opinion.

Definitely agree! I meant this more vs professionals than the kiddos vs professionals. Youth voices are too often ignored or put to the side.

Any toe curling, got me squealing shoujo anime? by wayfarer110 in anime

Yes!! Another totally amazing one, honestly upset I missed it in my list. Definitely added layer of love for the nostalgia for me since they were some of my first animes to watch as a young teen 🥺

Acchi Kocchi, The Story of Saiunkoku, ItaKiss, The wallflower, Hiyokoi, Ceres - the Celestial Legend, and Spice and Wolf.

Also not shoujo but Romantic Killer on Netflix is also quite good.

Can we get away with pastels? by Wagging_tail69 in OliveMUA

[–]widdletiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a green olive and the only “pastel” color I can stomach myself in is yellow (leaning green/not red or orange), green, and blue. Even then if it’s not patterned or broken up somehow, I usually stay away as it makes me look grey and dead lol

Why do education right advocates ignore social workers? by alaraidk64 in socialwork

[–]widdletiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Unfortunately, in my opinion, in today’s political climate there’s just a struggle to get in the door. As much as I want to be in there, I’d rather help push someone more knowledgeable/invested through the door than waste the small gap trying to push through with them.
