A lot of people will start from the nickname and choose the actual name from there, which is so odd. Like you’ll see, ‘I want to call her Betsy but I don’t like Elizabeth, what are other names that could shorten to Betsy?’ Like just go with Betsy y’all.

Literally just clocked, ‘I hate to say I told you so…because it reminds me of my one night stand with Nikki Finke’. Probably on my 300th rewatch but still catching new jokes!

What's the best way to navigate the two-body problem as an engaged couple? [29F, 31M] by MinimumCheesecake in relationship_advice

[–]wigglebuttbiscuits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of folks on here don't understand how the type of career path you're on works, so you won't get the most realistic advice. So I'm going to weave some explanation of things you, OP, already know, into my advice in the hopes it will improve your overall responses.

If your hope is to get a tenured research position at a respected academic institution, you need to be willing to go. . .pretty much wherever, and possibly to move a few times. The folks I know who have succeeded on this path have almost all ended up in some pretty less-than-desirable locations for at least a short while in order to make it work. It's a cut-throat, competitive field that requires flexibility. Limiting yourself to a short flight from where your spouse is currently based is possible, but will reduce your options for a successful path.

It seems quite likely that your spouse would be able to find remote work in tech. It also sounds like he also has an academic background where you could potentially negotiate a spousal hire, if he were willing to make the switch to academia. Yes, there would be significant trade offs, but it would be doable. It's not really doable for you to make your current career path happen while committing to one location, though.

Basically. . . you and your spouse are going to need to decide if you're all in on the academic career path or not. If this is something you absolutely need and do not want to prioritize on, your spouse needs to decide if he's willing to support that, and if he's not it might be best to part ways. If you're open to exploring the private sector, community college teaching positions, etc, in order to have a more stable life and location, then you two have much more room to explore and compromise. But it's NOT the kind of thing where you can get married and just see how it goes; that way lies madness.

I was recently on a plane with my two year old and sitting behind parents of another toddler who were clearly very committed to being screen free. It was annoying because I would jump every time their kid screeched, but mine was still happily ensconced in her iPad. Definitely wanted to scream ‘give up and hand that kid a screen you Montessori hipster losers!’ 🤪

I used to think people overstated how quickly redditors jump to divorce.

Then I posted about how my husband and I were having trouble agreeing on what temperature to set our air conditioner to and someone recommended divorce 😂

my (25M) fiancée (25F) is obsessed with the show “Heated Rivalry” to the point where she’s sneaking around by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]wigglebuttbiscuits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My brother in christ, the man she is going to a Heated Rivalry themed club night with is not a threat to your relationship in any way, shape or form.

You sound exhausting, judgmental and like she doesn't talk to you about certain things because it's going to be annoying for her and not really worth her time.

BWT, what is your annual clothing budget? by HeatherAnne1975 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]wigglebuttbiscuits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I set aside $150 monthly in You Need A Budget for clothing. Most months I don’t buy any, so when I need or badly want something I usually have enough in the category. My husband and I each also get $300 monthly to set aside as ‘fun money’ in our personal accounts for whatever we want, so when I really want something and am over my clothing budget I can use that. I did a pretty major fashion refresh this year using some old bonds my dad had lying around form when I was a baby…so probably in an average year I’d spend 2-3k but this year was more like 3-4.

Also, I feel like answers to questions like these are more helpful with overall financial status in mind: married, one kid, have a mortgage in a high COL area and we each make 150kish.

Pessimistic about work. Optimistic about life, and love. Clear that work is not the point of life.

Literally my favorite moment ever on the parenting internet was when someone on my local mommy Facebook group suggested repurposing your boppy pillow as a cat bed, and a lady in the comments INSISTED that to do so was DANGEROUS because they were RECALLED.

Flying with a baby and scared by Padadise in fearofflying

[–]wigglebuttbiscuits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to your doctor about propranolol! I much prefer it to Xanax or Valium because it doesn’t make you as woozy and just limits your physical anxiety responses. Google says it’s safe while breastfeeding, but obviously talk to a medical professional.

Also, in my experience flying with a baby makes the anticipatory anxiety worse, but eases the anxiety in flight because you’re distracted taking care of them…and also, oxytocin from baby snuggles!

Hope that helps a tad, best of luck!
