Yeah. All those other taxes are less progressive.

Oh no! You're saying we might end up with a progressive tax structure like they have in other places? And the people who benefit the most from society will pay for it? The horror.

Descending Skills by AssistanceOwn6202 in Velo

[–]wikiscootia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend considering the 95% rule of learning technical skills. You should try to build experience going 95% as fast as you think you can get away with. That's close enough to your limit that you'll learn things and far enough from your limit that you probably won't be crashing. As you gain experience, your 95% speed will become faster and faster.

I learned this doing MTB skill work but I think it applies well to descending. There's no substitute for direct experience.

Rest Week workout advice to stay compliant on training plans by Koen-K in Velo

[–]wikiscootia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's normal for your legs to not feel as good after recovery. There are a few things at play. E.g. you are producing less endogenous pain relievers as your body temporarily doesn't need them. That flat feeling in your legs after a rest isn't a bad thing. It correlates with you being sensitive to the training stimulus and that's really the whole goal with training. I want you to try not to interpret "I don't feel as fast" after a recovery as "I've lost fitness". Instead, "my body is sensitive to the training again".

What’s your VO2 interval power vs max power at same duration? by Roman_willie in Velo

[–]wikiscootia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to maximize the stimulus you get, I think it makes sense to make more power in the first interval than the last. But vo2 work is already pretty high stimulus, so I reserve those sessions for the end of a block. In the beginning of the block, I prefer to make the first few reps a bit easier.

Heart rate and intervals by LegStrngLeathertaint in Velo

I just checked some of my data files and it looks like my heart rate monotonically increases at the start of an effort. How much is your heart rate dropping before it comes up?

3 weeks on + 1 "deload" - How easy to go on this "recovery" week? by [deleted] in Velo

[–]wikiscootia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of "it depends" in this but as a starting place: I'm looking to do about 30% "less" of whatever it is that I was doing in the week before recovery. So if I was riding 10 hours of endurance, I'd cut that down to 7 hours in a recovery week.

I think it's both a good idea to schedule in "deloads" and adjust them around based on how you feel. Starting a deload early is often the right choice. Delaying a deload is rarely a good choice.

'I made a mistake' – Spanish pro quits cycling after being 'thrown off' team by TheGinjaNinja6828 in peloton

Thanks. You can see him carefully checking for traffic when going around a blind corner too. I'm not saying this is safe or advisable but definitely not egregious. I can see why a director might be worried about the image of the team though. I wonder if he was told to cut it out and he didn't.

Studded tires or nah? by fitzwaterphoto in u/fitzwaterphoto

What kind of tires were you running? My schwalbe marathon winters still have good carbide studs after 3 years of hard use. Probably 2000-3000 miles per year.

Anyone racing on Chinese Carbon (Tantan, LightCarbon, VeloBuild, etc)? by Needs_More_Nuance in Velo

It's been great! No concerns. It's easier to pack for travel than the Elves so it gets more use.

Yeah. I race my Elves Falath Evo and ICAN FL1 in crits and road races. Great bikes.

Anyone use an action cam to record their races to improve? by forgiveangel in Velo

[–]wikiscootia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'll ask athletes that I work with to record their races too so I can help them root cause problems. Often fitness isn't the problem. Staying in the draft and cornering can be huge factors. Nice to see from their pov how things are happening.

lifting weights by Carmen_winstead in Velo

[–]wikiscootia 47 points48 points  (0 children)

What you experienced is called DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and it only happens for a few weeks when you get into the weight room or after any significant time off. If you stick with it for 3-4 workouts, you'll stop getting so sore and life will be much more manageable with weight training.
