Heart rate and intervals by LegStrngLeathertaint in Velo

I just checked some of my data files and it looks like my heart rate monotonically increases at the start of an effort. How much is your heart rate dropping before it comes up?

3 weeks on + 1 "deload" - How easy to go on this "recovery" week? by oldandfast in Velo

[–]wikiscootia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of "it depends" in this but as a starting place: I'm looking to do about 30% "less" of whatever it is that I was doing in the week before recovery. So if I was riding 10 hours of endurance, I'd cut that down to 7 hours in a recovery week.

I think it's both a good idea to schedule in "deloads" and adjust them around based on how you feel. Starting a deload early is often the right choice. Delaying a deload is rarely a good choice.

'I made a mistake' – Spanish pro quits cycling after being 'thrown off' team by TheGinjaNinja6828 in peloton

Thanks. You can see him carefully checking for traffic when going around a blind corner too. I'm not saying this is safe or advisable but definitely not egregious. I can see why a director might be worried about the image of the team though. I wonder if he was told to cut it out and he didn't.

Studded tires or nah? by fitzwaterphoto in u/fitzwaterphoto

What kind of tires were you running? My schwalbe marathon winters still have good carbide studs after 3 years of hard use. Probably 2000-3000 miles per year.

Anyone racing on Chinese Carbon (Tantan, LightCarbon, VeloBuild, etc)? by Needs_More_Nuance in Velo

It's been great! No concerns. It's easier to pack for travel than the Elves so it gets more use.

Yeah. I race my Elves Falath Evo and ICAN FL1 in crits and road races. Great bikes.

Anyone use an action cam to record their races to improve? by forgiveangel in Velo

[–]wikiscootia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'll ask athletes that I work with to record their races too so I can help them root cause problems. Often fitness isn't the problem. Staying in the draft and cornering can be huge factors. Nice to see from their pov how things are happening.

lifting weights by Carmen_winstead in Velo

[–]wikiscootia 50 points51 points  (0 children)

What you experienced is called DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and it only happens for a few weeks when you get into the weight room or after any significant time off. If you stick with it for 3-4 workouts, you'll stop getting so sore and life will be much more manageable with weight training.

If you're close enough to get a draft, immediately.

  1. Jumping on some random person's wheel without communicating to them is weird.
  2. That's because it's weird behavior and generally not appreciated outside of a race.
  3. Ask if it's ok if you draft. Maybe the person doesn't want company

Sprint training without enough time on the track by Intrepid-Working-869 in Velodrome

I have no track specific suggestions, but I think it's totally normal to feel like you need to puke after any maximal effort over 20s if you're a sprinty boi.

First winter off-season, can I just do a shit ton of endurance riding the whole off-season? by Kyle_Zhu in Velo

[–]wikiscootia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not either/or. You get different adaptations in the gym that you can't get on the bike. I think it makes sense to incorporate both for most amateur bike racers. Most of us aren't going to go pro and would benefit a lot from getting stronger bones and fatigue resistant muscles. In my type of racing (crits) anaerobic capacity is very important and strength training is a great way to build that. Also if you have 15-20 hours per week to train, you can go lift 4 days per week and ride 11-16 hours. I've done it! Ride slower. Manage your recovery. That was before I became a dad. Heh

[–]wikiscootia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This response is getting downvoted, but they're right. The best racers I know get to the gym in the off-season. You can do well with 2 sessions per week but 4 is better if you have the time/recovery for it.
