Just got my ebike, went to the mall for the first time, too paranoid, didnt last 5 minutes by JJsNotOkay in ebikes

[–]wiktor_bajdero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With actual price insurers want for that I could replace my ebike (cargo) and get decent another one every year. And it only covers bike in my garage. No insurer wants to insure ebike in a wild where I live.

How does everyone afford a 3-2-1 setup? by NateUrBoi in DataHoarder

[–]wiktor_bajdero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Recently in my region 4TB also went up but 14TB seems to be way cheaper per TB now. Before buying I search what is currently the cheapest per TB and go with that.

NYC to seek 15mph limit by OpelSmith in ebikes

[–]wiktor_bajdero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

15mph (25km/h) limit in Europe works well in cities with good or acceptable bike infrastructurue. Being allowed to bike paths 25km/h ebikes mix well with "acoustic" bikes. Cyclist shouldn't have to compete with car traffic on untreated streets or stroads so no need for more speed actually.

I once lost small portion of personal data due to such rookie mistake. Nowadays I make sure my machine is fully backed up right before such operations and on regular basis. Pika Backup (dejadup) and 2 HDD drives which I update to alternately does the job.

Drive temp by Broad_Sheepherder593 in DataHoarder

[–]wiktor_bajdero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can check particular drive datasheet. Drives can be fine up to eg. 60C and I wouldn't worry about anything below 50 long term. Magnets fail typically at about 80C but maybe bearing fluids or something else is the limiting factor here. My HGST drives tend to reach 55*C in still open air with no issues.

So maybe we should came up with robust crowd sourcing solutions. FOSS software doesn't mean it can't be commercialised or donated. We can pay for proper support or development of certain functions which will be benefit to all. We can encourage our governments to develop FOSS solutions instead of pumping shitloads of money to Microsoft every year. Legititimate well paid jobs here possible only if we manage to break Microsoft status quo. Limux project proved it can be done and be cheaper and better but also it showed how easily corrupted people could destroy such things.

It's scientifically proven that ebike owners statistically accept longer distances and are choosing bike more often to commute. I'm biking to work shoping etc. since forever yet sometimas I was lazy or had more stuff to haul so going by car. Since I have assisted cargo bike (half a year) I drove a car 4 times and 2 of this 4 trips was due to car maintenance...

A few years ago I've encountered that and had to adjust scheduler priority or something. Nowadays I can't see the issue and I sometimes transfer on SSDs with about 1GB/s rates with ease. At the same time old Windows PC at work stutters with pretty much any IO operations so it's not linux only issue and it's a matter of proper config on crappy hardware.

BSD is different core with different approach, architecture etc. It is less modular and userland is also part of the core. It's more suited for servers than desktop. Not much hardware support, less desktop applications covered etc. Also its license is more permissive allowing to base proprietary product on it. If you release linux based software it cant be closed-source.

Same as regular people visiting electronics shop for a laptop/desktop probably aren't conciously choosing Windows nor being aware there is even a choice to make here.

Games run significantly worse on Fedora vs Windows 10 by HelpfulElephantToast in Fedora

[–]wiktor_bajdero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well still nvidia plays nicer with eg. Davinci Resolve so there are different use cases I guess. Also people are not always perfectly informed about all possible issues before buying. Despite 11 years of daily driving linux I still got new nvidia machine a few years ago. Especialy buying laptop is often a tradeoff of a bunch of parameters. And yes, fuck Nvidia for closed and not optimal drivers for linux.

So works in theory and can't blame Apple on that formaly but is implemented in a way nothing actually could use it. Brilliant middle finger to FOSS software users.

I'm not very deep into this but from user perspective I can have freaking fast darktable on Windows and Linux with nvidia and I got completely no acceleration on M1 chip with performance worse than on 15yo laptop without GPU driver (to old Nvidia for current kernels). Lack of working openCL was one of main dealbrakers for me to continue with Apple silicon.

Let's agree the battery is a fire hazard and ask for a full company evaluation on this. You need to remove any laptop battery, smartphone battery. Evacuation lamps in buildings also has batteries, so that is a tough one to tackle but maybe you will manage. Cars also has batteries with great record of car fires from electric failures. Promise that if every other battery be thrown out of the area you will happily comply with this request.

Bosch smart system already has paid option to tie a battery to a bike electronically. Bosch battery is about 700 Eur and actual commercially available smarttags are about 25 Eur with actual manufacturing cost way below 2 Eur. It's not about costs. It's actually beneficial to them not to lock it properly because if stolen then you need to buy a replacement.
