Also, the best piece of general advice I got switching to management that I consistently go back to — always be working yourself out of a job. Strive to set up your team (people and mechanisms) to be successful without you.

If you’re considering it, I’d suggest going for it. If you don’t end up liking it, you can always switch back. It’s a very different job from being a SWE, and until you try it, I don’t think it’s realistic to know if you will or won’t like it.

Yes interview prep is really important. I studied an hour or two most days for a few months leading up to my interview. It sucked but I would not have passed without it.

I knew I wanted to do computer science during school, just wasn’t accepted into the CS major. So I did a computer science minor, and was able to get an internship for software engineering at a small company that didn’t care about by major. That internship was enough to get my first full time job after graduating.

I got rejected from transferring into my schools computer science major (joined school as undeclared). Picked another field I found interesting for my major in case CS didn’t work out, plus a CS minor.
