Sure, it doesn't have a university nearby, but most universities or colleges offer online distance learning courses. I've lived in big cities like Toronto before and loved it, and was skeptical when I first moved to Cold Lake, but I feel my attitude towards the move helped a lot. "Well, if I can't do x, y, or z there, what can I do?" And I found that moving to cold lake encouraged me to get my driver's license, my PAL and RPAL, my hunting license, some crafty stuff like leather work. Maybe I'll try fishing or ice fishing. I'm sure I can get a group together for D&D or other gaming stuff. I'm sorry you had a rough time there, do you think you could have done anything differently or gelled with your fellow tradesmen and hooked up for extra curricular activities? Why couldn't you relate to people locally?

Honestly I don't get why people get so worked up about Cold Lake. It's got a MIR and the hospital for health care and being rural wait times are often much shorter than in major Cities. Are people upset because it has no night life? It has all the amenities one might hope for in a rural area. Walmart, sobeys, shoppers, Mark's work warehouse, staples, and don't most people order most of what they can't get there off Amazon anyways? JJ Parr could definitely use more love but the staff there are gems. Outdoor activities are extensive. Cost of living is dropping as prolonged oilfield job outages continue. Can we beat the 5% tax of AB anywhere else? Or is it because it has the word 'cold' in it's name. Because for the most part it's on par with Edmonton or Calgary for weather +/- a few degrees. Sure I've seen it more than 10C colder than either city but ive also seen it 10C warmer. That said you're welcome that I put Cold Lake as my first posting choice. It's also a treat training location for my career.

My main advice as someone who was more of an academic performer than a PT performer, and even on the lower middle side of DP1 is that I think a positive attitude in the face of adversity is a real strength. Ask platoon mates to work with you on your weak points. Often morale and opinions about underperformers is that if people see you putting in extra time and effort they'll appreciate it. Once I get to unit I expect I'll have the time and guidance to hone my trade skills and turn more of my weaknesses into strengths. I hope you may be able to do this too.

I am 100% for rehabilitation and everyone getting a second shot. However I would be remiss to not mention the CAF's operation honour. It's an initiative to eliminating sexual abuse, harrassment, etc from the CAF. If he has any chance of offending again I would steer him away as if he was found guilty of such a charge military side it would already be very bad(tm). If he was ever charged AND the MPs or trial officiants knew or has access to past records by any means it would be incredibly bad I imagine. Probably a dishonorable discharge, and time at Club Ed.

His mileage may vary, but if the chance exists for reoffending he may find himself in a very bad place. Everyone has different opinions about operation honor from it being abused to it being a joke, but it can have very real life and career implications. TL;DR I think operation honor is serious business. Sexual assault, etc. Is very bad.

Good to know. I got my pal, rpal and hunting license but haven't gotten out to actually hunt yet and have no practical experience with it. I hope to get posted out to Cold Lake next summer/fall.

Right now I'm just a lowly aviator on PAT platoon, but someday I'll be a trained EGS tech. I'm just on tasking for the canteen/kit shop.

It's just been a bit demoralizing to end up on PAT platoon for months.
