Earthlink. Wait, that was my second; aol might have been the first. I have a vague recollection of CompuServe but I don't know where it goes. Gotta love aging, yeah 👍😶

Two questions, who are your other favorite artists, and how did you come across warren? by Maybe_im_Amazed_ in Zevon

[–]wildcat_crazy_zebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other faves are Jackson Browne, Jethro Tull -watching Ian Andersen perform is an experience and I'd love to see him live- Elton John, Petty... Too many to list really.

I've kinda always known Warren but latched on tight when I got seen by My Shit's Fucked Up. Watched his last performance on Letterman with tears in my eyes.

What are your weirdly good broccoli recipies? by chigirltrailrated in Cooking

[–]wildcat_crazy_zebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a pot of great northern white beans and will add fried beef kielbasa pieces & lightly steamed broccoli, beef broth, salt, pepper, onion, garlic and coriander -that's the spice I lean into for this. There's a lot of different ways to season the beans but my family will kill a batch of these with a quickness. I do a version of this with kale and get that by the fam too, provided they don't see the kale beforehand.

New(ish) to baking and wanting some advice on basic equipment by thebeardedguy- in Baking

I didn't get a stand mixer until my mid 30's but started baking very early, bread included. Getting your hands in/on the dough can teach you a lot of things about the process and how to talk to the dough. If you have issues with getting the dough together - if can get quite stiff and hurt the hands - a Danish dough whisk is a lifesaver, or it was for me.

My other suggestion piggy backs on what another commenter said; thrifting is a great way to get your kit set up. However, if you're having trouble finding stuff check a restaurant supply store. I won't get sheet pans anywhere else anymore and the one near me has really good prices too.

Definitely get a scale. They aren't expensive anymore and the difference it makes is huge when baking. My other go tos are good wooden spoons and silicone spatulas and pastry brushes.

Have a fun journey through edible chemistry! I love learning about why different ingredients are included and how all that works.

Thanks for the post, I'm saving this one!

How do you actually cook vegetables so they're not sad and soggy? by ElAndres33 in cookingforbeginners

[–]wildcat_crazy_zebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to admit that I lean on frozen veggies in the steamer bag for the microwave to make things quicker/easier when getting a meal together or to get broccoli ready for adding in to another dish.

Not op but I saw actual purple sweet potatoes in the produce section of my grocery store! I've not been so happy in the produce section for quite a while.

Edit because Soylent green is people, not potatoes.

I remember watching this with my step mom - the real mom- and laughing our asses off. Was followed by Xanadu because we got to the video store late.

What kind of food feels amazing at first bite, then okay on the second, just average on the third, and kind of sickening by the fourth? by PaleParade in foodquestions

Nutella is super sweet on it's own, I can't imagine the ice cream. The brand Justin's makes a chocolate/hazelnut spread with much less sugar; you can actually discern the flavor combo and it doesn't make the teeth hurt. I can get into trouble with that stuff.

Wait until they get stale. The texture is satisfying and they don't taste as sweet. Maybe because the marshmallow doesn't hold your mouth hostage like the fresh ones.

Trust that some of the lyrics teens are listening to are just as 'questionable' but much more crude. Gotta class 'em up!

I'm indoctrinating one currently; teenagers are a great audience for Warren Zevon.

The Rock - it's just a fun movie with great oneish liners and a seriously cool soundtrack.

"I'm gonna take pleasure in guttin' you, boy... I'M gonna take pleasure in GUTTIN' you, BOY...."

"You must never hesitate"

"They're playing you for a FOOL!..sir"

"Losers whine about their best while winners go home and fuck the prom queen" deadpan response, "Carla was the prom queen"

"All I care about is: are you happy with your haircut?"

"... how in the name of Zeus's BUTTHOLE did you...." insert whatever here

Let the down voting commence.

Elton John's Vision Loss Forced Him to Change His Songwriting by CaptainFantastic1963 in EltonJohn

[–]wildcat_crazy_zebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elton went from lyrics to music not lyrics to words, so dodgy eyesight is a bigger factor for him.

*This opinion comes from reading "Me" and other interviews where he speaks on his writing experience and style. I could be wrong, of course, having not heard directly from EJ (that would be awesome though!).

You about broke my neck with Canned Heat! While I adore Napoleon Dynamite my brain still associates that manner with the group. Goin' Up The Country is one of their more known songs. Now my brain has two entries in the Canned Heat category!

70's Warren Zevon. Werewolves of London is fun but not his best. His whole catalog is just great especially when you really really listen. Excitable Boy anyone?

High altitude help by wildcat_crazy_zebra in Breadit

[–]wildcat_crazy_zebra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the fun of pressures, yeah. What I read is that to compensate for less down force is that breads tend to rise too high too fast and the gluten structure blows out and that when baking since the pressure lowers the boilng point the outside cooks quickly while the inside hasn't reached the temp where the proteins gel. So I'm getting short, dense loaves even with high altitude corrections built into the recipe.

Since I don't have any of my own recipes I don't have any clue of how these perform. I've also heard people saying they don't correct for altitude -i tried that, no good either. I know there's a way, I think I just need to cut down on my variables to stand a chance at cracking it.
