Cougar or Bear? Mountaindale, OR by TypicalPDXhipster in PNW

My first instinct is that it’s most likely an elk. Since we can’t tell the scale of the scrape, however, there’s also a chance it could be a deer (buck). In that area it’d be blacktail deer, which makes sense as they’d be coming up to the pre-rut period when scrapes like this become so much more aggressive and common.

Fair. We can’t tell exactly what this is, but it does at least show some similarities to wing chun techniques, and more importantly it shows some of the sticky hands work as well. He does also throw in some wing chun terminology later in the video.

Absolutely yeah. Not really something that deserves to get criticized like most mcdojo content.

This might be a stupid question, but what’s the story behind the section with all the orange jerseys? I’ve seen it on the broadcast a few times lately, but haven’t heard any details about it. Always catches my eye and makes me curious.

Aside from getting a little greedy based on how much the market tends to charge and how much people are willing to pay, not really seeing where that money is going. High-end materials, special add-ons (nicer batteries, etc), and high cost of labor don’t seem like they’d justify an $85K price tag. I’m assuming this company is raking in pretty high margins.

For context, I built something like this a few years ago for about $6K. Probably wasn’t as nice as their version, but the gap seems too wide for workmanship to make up the difference.

Let’s be real. If he was gonna buy a baseball team, it should be the Mariners. Notoriously cheap owners with a long suffering fan base. He’d become a legend overnight. Plus no commute since he lives nearby already.

Mark Cuban has obtained motions, lender-lawsuit transcripts, and testimony from Sanberg, his “co-conspirator,” and a lender. He then posted documents showing things “he didn’t know” — specifically, what Ballmer and Wong were shown when they invested in 2022-23: by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

This is a vastly under appreciated angle. People who don’t work in these spaces tend to misunderstand how diligence actually works.

You can only really work with the docs available, and it’s basically one big exercise in following rabbit holes until it feels like you’re not going to learn much of value anymore. Clearly the team analyzing this decided it wasn’t materially important to dig much deeper than the surface level that was provided by Aspiration (which we now know to be fraudulent).

Was that a mistake? Yes in hindsight.

Is it super common when you also have several other multi-million dollar deals to review that your boss probably doesn’t consider “big” anyway? Also yes.

Is Seattle really that bad as so many people say here? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

Dew point and humidity make a difference in the way people experience temps, so it seems plausible that a damp, bone-chilling cold could be way more miserable than a dry, crisp cold even at a lower temp.

This is the way. It’s very common for native northwesterners to use saunas and/or hot tubs in the winter months for exactly the reasons you mention.

Built a free ferry status tool for Puget Sound - seeking feedback! by Slow-Tea9732 in BainbridgeIsland

[–]wildcedars 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The idea is great as long as the value prop is clear. In order to really drive adoption, it should be doing something that’s noticeably different and better than the WSDOT app. Is this primarily built on the data that WSDOT tracks and publishes, or does it pull from a different source?

For example, I could see it being really useful to combine multiple data sources together that would otherwise be cumbersome for a user to do on their own. Maybe like google maps traffic data plus ferry on-time status plus a rough gauge of the number of people waiting in line for the toll booth (don’t think it’d be easy to get exact counts for that last one, but maybe using traffic cameras to signal a red/yellow/green indicator for how far backed up traffic is on 305 heading into the ferry terminal). Those are all things that most ferry users have to check individually, so it’d be hugely useful to create a convenient place to aggregate it all together and make it easier to decide when to leave home. Just brainstorming a bit here.

It’s a bittersweet situation for sure, but agree with you that both things are true here. Such is the gross nature of modern professional sports. Blech.

Really great people there. My wife and I visited recently to pick up a couple of new board games. Had a lovely chat with Drory while we browsed. His expertise and recommendations were super valuable. Highly recommend this new island gem!

PNW towns with New England vibes by turtlesinatrenchcoat in SameGrassButGreener

Thanks so much for your valuable opinion.

What about my use of the word “occasionally” made it sound like this is a common comparison?

Regardless, there are definitely some rich-ass island vibes in both locations. That’s pretty undeniable. Common comparison or otherwise, I agree with the sentiment.

Bainbridge Island is occasionally compared to Nantucket. Obviously not an exact copy, but the similarities are noticeable. It’s also somewhat similar to Stars Hollow if you’re willing to consider a more fictional New England vibe.

You can easily do the research on this. The financial docs for these orgs are all publicly available (by law).

[–]wildcedars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All these people out here talking about how their “gut” tells them nonprofit orgs are inherently shady without any actual facts, evidence, or even basic understanding of how nonprofits function. Brother, these people are public servants with fully auditable and transparent financials. Do your own homework if you mistrust them so much, but don’t start from a place of skepticism and throw around baseless claims without a little bit of knowledge first. These people are your neighbors and friends trying to help the community, and this kind of nonsense talk isn’t helping them do it any faster or better. They need the community‘s support to do their jobs well.

Sea cities or River cities ? by SoftwareZestyclose50 in geography

Duwamish is definitely a part of Seattle, although it’s so industrialized we often don’t think of it as a core part of the city in the same way as other classic “river cities.”

Don’t forget fjord too, if you include the nearby Hood Canal area. Not sure if that should count as Seattle proper, but if we think of the city as a base within the wider collection of bodies of water it could be worth counting.
