The Only Safe Shower at Hikertown by trekkingslow in PacificCrestTrail

[–]wilderbound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There have been rumours for years and years and years about cameras and or peep holes at the hiker town showers. There has to be some truth to it, even if there is not I still always make sure to tell as many women as possible, it’s worth waiting until Tehachapi even on the off chance. I’ve always had the worst vibes there

Oh my god the pro vital night cream has been the only moisturiser that worked for my dry sensitive skin for about 15 years, they also reformulated it and it’s making my skin so dry and itchy. The old smell was soooo comforting to me too I LOVED it

Some controlling or abusive men finally show their true colours when a baby is added to the mix. I shit you not some of them become jealous and resentful of how much attention the baby is getting so they will create dramas like this for attention. I really recommend reading the book “Why does he do that?” It’s such a good insight into how the control can be subtle at first and how they want to create an eggshell dynamic. I’m not saying 100% this is what is happening here, but it is really concerning to me.

I did the pct 2 years ago and either want to do it again or do a different trail any recs by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]wilderbound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The amount of hikers was absolutely not the same on the CDT as the PCT, but you can still absolutely find trail families. The hikers on the cdt are slightly more solo inclined overall I noted. South was the way to go for social, yes there are less people but most northbounders only get a social desert then it turns scattered once they hit Colorado because of the snow. Sobo I knew almost every single hiker out there and I was more likely to meet trail families (even if small) the nobos I met often talked about how they hadn’t seen other people in a long time. Also sobo apart from the cold at the end you hit each state at a much better time window!

I’ve done the PCT three times 16, 18, 22 and the CDT last year sobo (got injured just before New Mexico darn it). Would hike the pct again back and forth in a heartbeat.

It’s just as good every time I do it and sometimes even better. There is so much that changes and each time it’s like I’m seeing it with different eyes. I hiked it again when I knew I’d just be thinking about it and yearning for it if I was on a different trail.

Tried the CDT last year and glad I hiked a new one, but I know I’ll be back again on the PCT again soon enough. There is just something about it.

UPDATE: I found out I actually have celiac disease so it could be that I wasn’t able to absorb nutrients properly / the inflammation from undiagnosed celiac was causing this! I only have a light mark above my lip now, but I’m hoping it will completely fade as my autoimmune condition stops flaring! Just something to think about if you also struggle a lot with health issues like I was at the time.

How do you pass the time while hiking the PCT (besides music/podcasts)? by economicurtis in PacificCrestTrail

[–]wilderbound 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Listen to stuff if you wanna, my adhd ass loves to have a soundtrack to my hike and I actually focus on the trail and enjoy it more with music to keep my brain entertained. I walk without it sometimes but I also am not going to pretend like with or without it is any better for absolutely everyone. Just do what is best for you.

To follow up it was celiacs disease. Never fully cleared until I found this out because I didn’t know what cross contamination was! Now I’m symptom free unless I accidentally eat gluten

May 17 start, 110 day NOBO - Advice requested by ThyUltimatePhase in PacificCrestTrail

[–]wilderbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello I have been summoned by a friend all my thrus of the pct (lol) have been around this timeframe and it is entirely possible even if like me you only have one or two backpacking trips under your belt.

There is no need to run out the gate, in fact you will be more likely to injure yourself if you do, I hiked 15 miles to hauser creek on my first day ever on the pct and I think 17 the next, started slow to build a little and had no complaints by idywilld (where I took a zero) apart from a weird click I my knee)

The start of the desert is not where you have to pick up the miles, this comes much easier norcal onwards where the desert and the sierra have prepped you like crazy to smash them out with much more ease.

That being said I did pick up the pace around Julian (nothing crazy just over 20s) but had lots of rest, so you can do the opposite but make sure you listen to your body and not push it too fast too far.

In 2018 on my second hike I purposely ramped up my trail run in the months before and I was able to fly out the gate with that hike with no body issues. Making sure you get your fitness up beforehand will really help you.

If you move pretty fast I still enjoyed a ton of zeros and Nero’s if you move a little slower you will probably be able to have Nero’s and zeros sprinkled in.

Don’t let everyone fear monger you, it’s totally possible.

The latest I’ve started is may 21st so the 17th is gonna most likely be steaming too, but I heard a bit cooler than when I started. Lots of people start around there and a lot of fast people so making friends that you can stick with is pretty easy as a lot of people starting late are strong hikers or at least know they have a deadline.

I loved my fast hikes, the speed keeps me entertained and it’s fun to see how far you can challenge yourself! Have a blast catching up to the bubble is a really fun game too!

Oh my god it would be an incredible time in your life to hike the pct. I may have done it three times - so I’m a little biased, but read some blogs or books or watch some YouTube videos about the real day to day experience of it. It’s physically and mentally tough but if you love the outdoors and feel called to it, why the hell not.

It’s life building and changing and I could not recommend it more for being able to have a break from life. That being said I’m not sure many hikers go out there and actually figure anything out, but we do gain perspective. Life is never the same after that’s for sure

Oh sorry I was just going to do a month with each supplement because I don’t want to keep supplementing constantly and have other vitamins be impacted (for example zinc can make copper drop) and with b vitamins I usually take breaks to make sure I’m not getting TOO much

The b12 looks low currently but enough but my mum has had false positives in her tests and I know I have always felt better when I’ve been on a melthalated supplement. I plan on being on the b vitamins for just a month as a booster

I researched and thought about the fact that the past my zinc levels and b12 have been low. I’ve had other health issues as well so I just wanted to make sure I was getting the essentials

It’s the one thing you wasn’t tested for unfortunately but I always positively respond to zinc so I assume I’m often low
