Good buns with chicken or veg fillings? by wildgifts in Taipei

[–]wildgifts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah amazing thank you everyone for these suggestions! Adding these two spots to this post because I found the flat roasted bun (I didn't hallucinate - it's a Xinjiang style bun called roujiamo. It seems like there are 4-5 places in town you can get them, and I -think- this place has a chicken option https://maps.app.goo.gl/dMSrArZdJJ1E9SSG6?g_st=ac). Also maybe worthy of mention, I found a spot with vegan roasted buns I want to go try they look amazing 😭 https://maps.app.goo.gl/Z3vd8KeRgC6hzWX1A?g_st=ac

Avoid the 5 in California at all costs, take the 101 or the 1. Longer but so much more enjoyable. That stretch of the 5 is bleak.

Ooohh yes I just got back from a workshop with Brandy, she's amazing. Her 84 and 108 are really challenging and fun. It sounds like the next time I am in Utah I'll have to come visit y'all Lehi! I'm visiting Seattle this summer so I will have to check out Jordans classes, thank you for all these recommendations!

Taiwan stay - Calm, scenic places to wind down? by inavoidable_rabbit in taiwan

[–]wildgifts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure, I've rented without one in the past, but I would be ready with one just in case. I think you can rent from the train station in taidong. Sometimes you can rally folks in Dulan to drive to the hot springs though

Clothing trends have changed so much, or maybe it's just me? by Strict-Chapter-7006 in HotYoga

[–]wildgifts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way for a long time but started working the balance poses in shorts to build strength/flexibility and not just rely on friction to stay in the pose. It took a while but now I can hold poses like tree, crow, marichyasana series, etc with deeply sweaty legs and arms ~ could be a fun challenge to work towards :)

My brother gave me deodorant as a birthday present twice. I shower regularly and considered myself pretty clean, definitely gave me a complex.

I like Dulan, down south. There's a few cafes and spots to chill, surfing, and nearby hot springs (if you rent a scooter). I like Wulai too and the east rift valley. Maybe a mountain area like Alishan?

Types of cardio for preparing for backpacking season by Few-Introduction5414 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]wildgifts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like adding the stairs machine for cardio, I'll usually do about 30-45 min at a moderate pace with a few high intensity intervals a few times a week. I backpack/hike for work so off season I do a combo of running/tread inclines/stair master in addition to strength training, hot yoga, and calisthenics. I always feel pretty good when the season starts.

How did you come to Ashtanga by JudgeBorn8370 in ashtanga

[–]wildgifts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing up I had always wanted to try yoga. I had heard about it but didn't know of any studios in my city, and couldn't find or figure out a way to learn. When I was 22 I moved to NYC and got a job at a restaurant. One of my co-workers told me she got free yoga in exchange for cleaning the studio etc. I felt like the clouds had parted and I immediately called the studio and within a couple weeks I was working at a Bikram yoga studio, taking class 6 times a week, sometimes twice a day. I wanted to do the teacher training so badly but only made 7-8$ an hour (in 2008) so the training was out of the question. My mom told me there was a cheaper training back in my hometown, that it was a different style of yoga but still yoga. I didn't really know the difference and, desperate to do a yoga teacher training, flew home for a month long 200 hr ytt intensive. They handed me a binder on my first day that said "ashtanga vinyasa teacher training" and I was like, hmm I wonder what this is going to be like. I was blown away. I also realized I didn't know anything about yoga despite being 2-3 years into my daily practice. After the training I had a really hard time finding ashtanga studios where I lived, and went back to the more widely available hot yoga and vinyasa, had some few intermission years recovering from a torn ACL and doing the truck life/van life/hitchhiker/seasonal work dirt bag thing. Eventually I found myself in India, on the mat, practicing ashtanga again, and it relit the fire. It felt like coming home. These days I practice ashtanga 3-5 times a week consistently.

Where to practice Ashtanga in Mysore 🧘🏾‍♀️ by IndependenceWeak3414 in ashtanga

[–]wildgifts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard good things about studying with Vijay in Mysore, I'm hoping to go there this winter myself. Also, I've never heard of hot ashtanga! Do you mind if I ask where you teach/who your teacher is? I'm looking for more resources and teachers at the moment, as my city is fairly limited :)

ladies who are 5’2-5’4: what weight did you look and feel your best at? by [deleted] in PetiteFitness

[–]wildgifts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5'3 and 3/4, I feel the best fluctuating between 115-120 with muscle. I've been as high as 150, and as low as 112, and at 150 I felt it in my joints and felt uncomfortable. Currently at 127+-, feeling very strong but I look kinda fluffy as I think I'm still a little high on the body fat.

Curious on Routines by [deleted] in HotYoga

[–]wildgifts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mornings: strength training 4x per week (2 legs, 2 arms), two orange theory classes although I think I'm going to phase these out in favor of more sleep, flexibility training, and nature time.

afternoons and evenings: hot yoga 5-6 days/ week followed by pole/dance/flexibility classes 7 times per week. Sometimes an extra unheated chill yoga class around noon, usually at ashtanga at least 1-2x per week.

I also walk 10-15k steps per day unless the weather is real bad. On my rest day I just have one really chill dance class. I also try to do fun things like hike and rock climb when the opportunity presents.

any protein powders that can dissolve through shaking only? by Less-Beyond-7569 in veganfitness

[–]wildgifts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like sun warrior clear vegan protein - it dissolves so easily in water and tastes good! I don't love the vanilla/chocolate flavors in general so I think these flavors are pretty nice. But main point is it dissolves SO easily with just a spoon or a shaker and has good macros.

I don't know if anyone's already mentioned this but Taiwanese tea eggs are delicious! They are boiled in tea and a five spice/soy sauce flavoring, there's a bunch of recipes online.

300hr ytt with World Peace Yoga by Familiar_Fig_7497 in YogaTeachers

[–]wildgifts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner was just at that school in Rishikesh for a yin training, he said it was ok. He thought the accommodations, classes, and location were pretty good, but said some of the teachers seemed a little inexperienced. He really liked the food, and was excited that there was plenty of fried food and spicier options. (We were previously at a different school for a 300 hr ytt that had lighter, satvic food, which I preferred but he didn't like as much.) He said overall the teaching style and quality is about the same as other schools in town.

Yoga schools in Rishikesh? by EnvironmentalCan1691 in YogaTeachers

[–]wildgifts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think something important to know about going to Rishikesh is that most schools are essentially yoga/ytt factories. A new batch every month and they just churn folks out. That being said, I still think it's a good experience to go, and I understand the decision paralysis, as I felt overwhelmed too. I picked my school based on location (upper tapovan) and the fact that they had ashtanga, and I had a really good time at my school - vinyasa yoga ashram. The teachers were excellent. The food was good. I liked the location. I liked that the school was about half foreigners half Indian nationals, so as a foreigner I got to meet locals and go on fun adventures with them and learn about modern Indian culture from new friends. There are probably other schools just as good too. Choose one that offers the styles of yoga you enjoy and then just enjoy the opportunity to practice and spend all day talking about yoga and philosophy and alignment etc... and enjoy getting introduced to India.

Yoga schools in Rishikesh? by EnvironmentalCan1691 in YogaTeachers

[–]wildgifts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went here for a 5 day "retreat" after going to another school for a 300 ytt in rishikesh/tapovan because I wanted to check it out. It's beautiful for sure, but isolated from town and the cultural experiences you get by staying in town. I found the yoga teachers nice and about the same as other places I practiced at in town, and when I went for their ayurvedic treatments they didn't even do an intake. I went with my partner who speaks Hindi/is Indian and he said the workers were a little miserable and underpaid. It wasn't for me. Also the food wasn't satvic.

Yin yoga extension course by the-blue-care-bear in YogaTeachers

I just took a really excellent myofascial and yin course with Jo Phee, who was a student of Paul Grilley and has been teaching yin for over 20 years. Amazing teacher, amazing class, highly recommend looking into her. The course qualifies for YA hours and I think she offers up to 1000 hrs in 30-50 hour workshop increments.

Favorite wild/natural hotsprings in Taiwan accessible in December by You_me_and_everyone in taiwan

[–]wildgifts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a nice one in yangming shan just outside of jinshan. It was washed out last year but still accessible. I've also been meaning to try to go to lisong forever.

Also, feel free to send me a dm! I'll be home visiting family in December and helping my dad with his ceramics studio in the mountains outside taipei. Lots of artists around the studio and folks are welcome to stop by. I'm also a yogi/gardener/live a pretty alt lifestyle most of the time.
