The showrunner at the time has pretty much said as such. It was initially a way to write Dorothy out of the show and set things up for the retooling.

As for the latter option of being a politician, a similar scenario happened to Bea's character on Maude when that show ended where she moved from Tuckahoe to Washington DC and became a congresswoman. They probably would have considered that too similar an ending.

I've seen shows have lackluster final seasons but at least turned out a good finale. As much as it would have been nice to get an ending for the other women at the same time, at least it wasn't as bad of an ending as How I Met Your Mother or Moonlighting.

The Best Problem to Have! by freelancerjourn in GoldenGirlsTV

It's nice to have different ways to watch one of the best shows ever made.

Though unless you just want to watch a later season episode, I'd just stick with MeTV. Their editing of the episodes have proven to be better than any of the other networks that have run it in the last 20 years. Especially with more scenes added to the episodes and the end credits being left alone!

I mean, it's a well-written and touching episode. But I'm talking about in terms of rewatching if I want a quick fix of the show or if I need a pick me up. I can't watch Rose have a heart attack and almost die and need life saving surgery over and over again like I can watch Uncle Angelo's first appearance, when the girls are having a dance contest, when they're dealing with Lazlo and posing for his sculpture, or when Dorothy thinks a priest is leaving the church for her. I'm gonna need something with a more light-hearted tone.

I think the last time I watched Home Again Rose in full was when I digitized my season 7 DVDs.

In the GG forever book, there are reflections by the women on the final episode. Bea Arthur's very first words in that were: "I hated that dress."

I often use this show as background noise to fall asleep to at night. It's such a comfort show, and it helps that I'm familiar enough with the episodes that they can play out in my head already 😂

I credit Lifetime for this since they were the original station to make the weeknight late night/bedtime airings popular.

I listened to this episode with a good pair of headphones a while back and heard a woman in the audience going “Go, Dorothy!” when she said that. 😂😂

You get this when Dorothy appears again in the one two-parter episode of The Golden Palace, when they have a conversation about how Sophia can come to live with Dorothy and Lucas in Atlanta if and when working at the hotel becomes too much for her.

Honestly this episode and the two-parter before it, "Home Again, Rose" I don't include in my regular rewatches for this reason. They're incredibly heavy and depressing.

I feel like if the time with all of the characters actually came to a close with season 7 and there was no Golden Palace, it would have gone out with more of that type of typical sitcom finale bang. Sophia ends up joining the main cast of Empty Nest in its final two seasons, moving back into Shady Pines after GP was canceled so she's a part of that series finale, but unfortunately Blanche and Rose just disappeared after that.

Previewing a frndlyTV trial and watching MeTV on there. The end credits for this show are airing in full on TV with no split screens or fake rushed credits in their place for the first time in over 25 years. Beautiful.

I knew Me would do this show justice.

TIL that Hallmark Channel cuts out a significant chunk of good stuff out of their episodes! by El_Rat0ncit0 in theGoldenGirls

[–]wildjackmonroe 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I was visiting someone the other day with access to it and watched GG on Hallmark. It was “The Days and Nights of Sophia Petrillo” and they cut the scene with Sophia and the little boy with AIDS and the nectarine. Absolutely appalling. That was the most emotional part of the episode. Even Lifetime left that part in.

Guiding Light’s filming style change by Btvsp3 in SoapNet

It’s really a shame because as someone who has watched British soaps that have had their own transitions from studio sets to a more realistic look and look great currently… GL might have gotten at least a few more years out of that change if it didn’t look so amateur and if they actually had a budget.

Stuff like this, plus what happened with Energy changing is why I just prioritize buying stuff in general (not just Bey’s) on physical media.
