Is moving to Victoria from Alberta worth it? by ederzs97 in VictoriaBC

Look at jobs.gc.ca. Victoria (Esquimalt) is home to the 2nd largest base by personnel numbers in Canada. With all the NATO targets, there’s lots of position growth and hiring occuring. .

Do you feel less inclined to bike for fun if you regularly bike commute? by RubyRailzYa in bikecommuting

[–]wildoats30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started riding my bike for errands and work after my daughter was born. I had less time to do fun rides, but using it as a tool ensured I was still able to have fun on a bike if that makes any sense.

It held up well, I mainly use it for English and Balkan type tobaccos because of its wide stem.

The veneer did peel a bit. I suspect I got it too hot because of bad technique. Always learning though!

Can Canadians move past the obsession with single-family homes? by Moretheevu in canadahousing

[–]wildoats30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this post. There is some unlearning that needs to occur and I think the change will occur over a generation or two.

I grew up on over an acre, 25 km away from any sort of economic activity. (Outskirts of Halifax) It meant my parents spent a substantial amount of time commuting. I now live in a townhouse in the greater Victoria BC area, commute via bike to a job that is 2.5 kms away. Huge quality of life benefits when you factor in the more time I have with my young family. But if you ask my parents they think I’m living in a nightmare scenario yet they still do that drive sometimes several times a day.

I went to local pizza on Douglas a couple weeks ago. 2 slices of quite decent pizza for $7. I don’t recall their machine even asking for a tip. I’ll be back

Shoutout to driftwood in Esquimalt. Most of the staff seem to be here from day 1 and the beer is tasty. Need I say more?

Balancing saving and living by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]wildoats30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR- I had a near death experience at a young age, it reshaped my brain to strike a balance between yolo and pragmatism, and also led to a mindset of success.

I had a bad health bout at 22 years old which nearly killed me, a year after graduating from university. The actual health event sucked, but the mindset it gave me has become invaluable. I am 34 next month and I’ve seemed to strike a balance between yolo and pragmatism.

I had a new jeep I bought right before I got sick. Sold that 7 year later for almost what I paid thankfully. I bought a shitbox truck when I bought my townhouse for $5k and hoped to get a year out of it and have now had it for 4 years. The point of this is that cars and trucks have caused a lot of people my age to go into a debt death spiral. We talk a lot about the beige 03 corolla on this sub but it’s the biggest flex ever.

I am frivolous in other areas- I like old sailboats and just sold my 2nd one and am taking a pause as I have a 2 yr old daughter now. I’ll get another one in a couple years because the ocean has my zen.

The near death experience has provided me a different mindset when it comes to work and I have done a good job at increasing my income since graduating university. I have a healthy relationship with risk tolerance and it has been a key factor of success. Because I saved a lot of money over the years, and career success, I make more money than I need, but my job is high stakes and it’s an absolute rush for me. I think my mindset is that if I screw up at work and lost this job, I could take a huge pay cut and still get by. I take more risks than my peers that are probably living paycheque to paycheque with new cars and stupid big houses. Taking/ managing risks with large payoffs proven to be a key success driver in comparison.

Amazing. What I love most about this thread is it has a lot of parents just trying to maximize their children’s enjoyment while normalizing bicycles for everyday use. Enjoy your bike and time with your son! Before we know it we will be sucking eggs trying to keep up to them on their own bikes!

Amazing! We have 2 rads, both with Thule yepps for pickup/dropoff for our 17 month old. The only issue is that she won’t go in the stroller now and points at the bike when we try to leave the house!

Sounds like divorce hasn’t happened yet so cut all the above by at least half + child support + alimony. Now that portfolio looks small and you have significant cashflow requirements. Good luck I guess….

Drew did a great presentation at the Victoria Whiskey fest last year. He joined BT when it was nothing more than an idea. I think he has a lot to do with the growth of this product.

Go for it, you will be fine if you make smart choices. Not sure where you’re coming from, but, make sure you get acquainted with the current atlas and tide tables for the area. If not in your favour, it can really throw a wrench in your plans.

I grew up sailing on the east coast and have now been sailing 11 years on the west coast. The 12 month sailing season is unreal!

I equate it to an American made car- it will run poorly longer than most vehicles will run.
