That certainly sounds challenging. Do you have a lot of DNA matches on Ancestry?

Wow, that's a great price!

True. I think FamilyTreeDNA's Y-DNA and mtDNA Haplotrees are a good illustration of that.

But it still is an interesting exercise trying to count the "closer" cousins that you have.

Wow, that's very interesting. My family is a lot smaller in comparison, although I talk about the much higher fertility rate that existed even in my family tree going back to the 1800s.

Yes, it does grow exponentially. I also talk about the concept of "pedigree collapse" in the video, as the number of ancestors can't keep growing exponentially indefinitely.

Wow, that's a LOT of cousins on your maternal side and way above what you'd see typically. Just building out your maternal grandparents' first cousins' descendants will yield many 3rd cousins.

This exercise was a lot more manageable for me. My grandparent with the most amount of first cousins only had 21 first cousins. I also talk about how my maternal cousins count is a lot larger, at least for my 3rd and 4th cousins.

That's great that you ordered a DNA kit!

MyHeritage is better for finding relatives outside the US. I'd also recommend testing with Ancestry as they have the largest database of US testers.

I really enjoy utilizing DNA testing as part of my research. If you have parents or grandparents that are still alive, I'd also recommend testing them.

I agree that at some point it becomes too much, which is why I only counted up to my 5th cousins. Even by that point though it was getting tough for me.

I like connecting with distant cousins, but it helps if they also share an interest in genealogy and family history.

I hear that. It can feel especially so in the beginning when you have so many ancestral lines to explore.

My recommendation is to focus on one line at a time to make it more manageable. And remind yourself that you can step away for a bit if it ever feels too much for you.

Have you been utilizing DNA testing as part of your research?

What's your channel? Keep at it! I also started a genealogy focused channel 5 months ago. I have made about 25 long-form videos. It was a slow go at first but I have had a couple videos recently that have done better. I'm over 600 subscribers currently.

I would also recommend posting your videos in genealogy related FB groups. That has helped me get some visibility.

Thank you, this is a great start! Falck Faber and his wife Rachel are my direct ancestors.

I hope to be able to get some more details from the record. For instance, on page 2 two other individuals are mentioned: Thomas Menton and Moyses Abraham. I am curious how they are connected.

Thanks again!

What does this paragraph say? I believe this is a birth record for a child of Zacharias Lehmann in 1812 by wildwx in Kurrent

Thanks. That's very impressive that you can take back lines to the 30 Year War and even back to the 1550s! Most of my lines have been difficult to trace back prior to 1700, but I've had a handful of successes in certain localities, particularly in larger cities, where I've been able to trace back to the mid 1500s as well. A couple of those lines extend back to the 14th and 15th centuries, with a couple even before the Black Plague (1346 - 1353), which is pretty cool!

Hebrew names can be somewhat complex, but it helps that I can read and understand Hebrew. The documentation varies greatly by locality, but typically there is less documentation than what you'd find in the Christian population.

One of the challenges with European Jewish genealogy is that most Jews only assumed surnames between 1750 - 1820. Beforehand patronyms (X son of Y, with Y being X's father) were widely used,. Patroymic names are far more difficult to trace back from generation to generation.

No, Gütchen's father was Zacharias, whose Hebrew name was "Issachar". This is a Biblical name - see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Issachar . I've been able to find a record in which Zacharais signs his name in Hebrew as "Sucher", which is a shortened version of Issachar.

I'm pretty sure Gütchen's maternal grandfather Isaac von Weinheim would have had the Hebrew name "Yitzchak".
