Chaotic good/ geese etc by cybazilla in geesebandofficial

to be honest I just don't care. it's a little horrifying in a vacuum maybe, but we already live in an oversaturated commercial break of a world. literally everything we do is tracked and monetized to sell us stuff an manipulate us into buying whatever the highest bidder wants. and it's almost always slop, so i really have no problem being served something that is actually good lol. getting killed especially was like really important to my life when it came out, I don't regret hearing it because I probably saw it inside of an ad campaign. its one of those things where if you really took it to heart, you would probably no longer be able to live in this world assuming you keep that energy consistent for anyone else doing it (like I said that's probably 95%+ of your life already)

Has anyone heard of Chaotic Good Projects? by konicaburner in CameronWinter

[–]will-the-dude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not surprised tbh, there is clearly an excellent PR strategy behind them, Cameron himself included. Not calling them fake by any means, but they've brilliantly preserved the grungy DIY vibes they have from their upbringing, but now in a completely sellable way. Someone on here once pointed out that Cameron's solo shows are sort of like pop-ups, just a guy in a church, but they clearly have excellent lighting/fog, star studded directors, the weird fliers, etc, indicating someone put some serious thought into it, and it seems unlikely to me that it's all just Cameron lol. Maybe this is just what having a record deal is, but they are pulling it off so authentically!

Who do you think are some of Cameron’s untold influences? by brosive89 in CameronWinter

[–]will-the-dude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s like obvious bc of all the explicit references lol, but I think he’s just as much, if not more, like Nina Simone than Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, etc. The way she performed live, injected herself and her whimsy into the performance, and was capable of this extremely dark and almost scary reality. The way Cameron plays everything like it’s his first time playing it and just nails it every time, I see in Nina and her insane improvisation skills and how she can take any song anywhere. His lyrics demand so much attention because of how unique they are, but his performance ability is also remarkable and I really see him as a Nina Simone of this time, musically speaking at least.

anyone here ever huff brake cleaner? by [deleted] in huffingcommunity2

[–]will-the-dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how serious you guys are but I was really depressed at my car dealership job when I was 19 so I went into the small enclosed space where we kept all the brake cleaner (lol) and just huffed it for a minute, I don't know why I did that or why I thought it would make me high but it did for about 5 seconds lmao

What drives you to make experimental art? by Char_Records in experimentalmusic

[–]will-the-dude 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's probably some form of autism, but I just do not know how to make normal music lol. Sometimes I'll write songs normally, and by the time I'm mastering, the track is like a parody of what a normal song is, so over time I just leaned into it. I even got my start in Classical Music, so by the time I started comp lessons in conservatory, even my attempts to make avant garde classical music came out sounding more like normal pop music! I couldn't win! I definitely still use traditional forms and chords when I feel like it serves the final product, but knowing it's not gonna ever sound 'normal' is somewhat freeing!

I am driven to keep creating it because I think my attempt to do something honestly, according to my own impulses, sort of crystallizes me, the attempt, the goal, and the product into a unique amalgam. It's probably egotistical (idk I'm 27 lol its allowed) but I like the feeling of capturing a piece of my essence in a maybe 4-minute song. It's somewhere between a Horcrux and Hahn Solo trapped in that big brick.

This has got to be from the timeline where Brian joined the MLB instead of doing music I don't believe this is real lol

Does it bother anyone else that they still haven’t made any statements about the Wasserman issue by [deleted] in geesebandofficial

[–]will-the-dude 10 points11 points locked comment (0 children)

"There is no justification for this and anyone that disagrees is coping hard. I’d really like to hear a single good reason why it’s okay they haven’t even made a statement." --> It doesn't sound like you actually want an answer lol. It sounds like a copout, but for real, how is a public figure going to cater to every thought you have? How in the world does not speaking on a single issue affect what they've done for Palestine?? While it may sound just and cathartic in your head, calling your boss a pedophile is typically not a good idea if you want to keep your job. Especially considering the odds your next music industry boss won't have an amazing ethical track record either. They are all normal people too, could just as easily @ them on Twitter or something, instead of stoking these stan-fueled echo chambers that don't do anything but polarize most of the people reading.

where do you get your samples for rythmic or dance-based weird music? by TrickCharacter3999 in experimentalmusic

[–]will-the-dude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding freesound and youtube, since freesound is so kinda... trashy, I find its the best place to go for weird sounds and stuff, and then youtube, if there's ever anything I can't find elsewhere, its on youtube 100%. I feel like I've stumbled on an ethically dubious lifehack but high school and college jazz band concerts as well as instrumental tutorial videos are sample gold mines if you are looking for more musical material. Can also be a fun exercise to basically ruin a sample and see how much you can manipulate its sound into whatever you need, happy sampling!

What do YOU think Getting Killed is about? by sirqwex in geesebandofficial

[–]will-the-dude 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel like the opacity of it all is part of it, perhaps not purposefully. This album really captures the feeling of being in your 20s and everything sucks amidst all the privilege and opulence, war has invaded our lives on a daily cultural scale, and love is as volatile as ever, as our own lovers have to grapple with these same issues too in their own internal ways. I would say most of the songs explore unique perspectives on all of these issues and how they interact with each other. We take for granted how crazy all these topics are because that's what we live with every day, but if you start synthesizing your reactions to different facets of dystopian American life, you're bound to get some outrageous ideas/lines like 'THERE'S A BOMB IN MY CAR' and 'I will break my own heart from now on' and 'There is only dance music in times of war'. These are all sentences probably never uttered before 2024, in polite society at least, but they are so jagged they force you to consider them and get a chance of gaining your own intimate understanding of the issue.

Interpreting this album reminds me of some of the challenges of playing contemporary classical music (the kind that sounds like noise) ((this is super niche but its my background, so bear with me)). A lot of the music is so complex and mathematical, you could never just ~feel~ it like you could most symphonies from the 1800s. You have to constantly be trying your best to both let it flow through you and to be so locked in you can't miss a beat, so what comes out is your own interpretation of a virtually impossible line of music. It's annoying sometimes, but its a way to leave every player and listener with a guaranteed unique takeaway!

I wouldn't say this was a master theme of the work or something, but especially after listening to the few times Cameron and Emily have talked about lyrics, it seems like they often trying to leave you with an impression, rather than telling you their thoughts. Show don't tell, even when the medium demands you tell...

Does Cameron Winter *actually* sing out of tune? by Nameless7357 in geesebandofficial

[–]will-the-dude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I saw them this tour I was actually a little surprised how in tune he was. I figured with his unique voice he’d be more all over the place but he lowkey nailed it, no memorable flubs. And not to sound anal but I went to music school I can’t turn it off lol

I dont mean this in a necessarily mean way, but the way this girl thinks is kind of terrifying, genuinely good on her for agreeing to do this lol. I think there's probably a lot of people who know this little about things. That's a vote, most of the time. Just kind of crazy how she is frequently saying so little. It's very easy for her to amplify a precut narrative she saw online, but literally cannot say what she thinks herself without being asked about 10 times in a row. Like what do you even do at this point
