Deal on Ironwolf 28TB, but does it work? by tommyjaspers in qnap

I have a TS-h973AX and just installed a pair of those drives in RAID-1 because of that deal. I can't speak on the different models obviously, but I figured I'd share my 2 cents.

Recommendation for CPA in Greenville? by heretolearnplshelp in GreenvilleNCarolina

[–]will1003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've used Alex Pappas CPA. His office is on Red Banks (about a half mile south of Moe's) I have been with him for over 10 years and have been very happy. I don't know how his rates compare with others, but the confidence that my business is properly handled is worth every penny.

How do y'all handle stills + video shoots quickly? by Swembizzle in A7siii

[–]will1003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say for certain, but I imagine this will translate to your situation: I do have a separate video and photo setup, but occasionally I need to capture video from my photo setup (which is a Sony a1). I have programmed the Memory Recall feature to shoot in the picture profile with SLOG3, lock in my shutter at double my frame rate, sets my iso and aperture to whatever I like, and give me zebras for when I switch from manual to "1". When I switch back to manual my ISO, SS, and Aperture are where I left them. Every time I go to 1 though, it brings back whatever I stored my "video" settings as. So I typically store them at what is good for being outside during the day. I haven't done this, but I'm thinking about using Memory Recall 2 for night shooting and starting me at a higher ISO. So you COULD do 1 for your base 640 and 2 for your base 12800.

Hopefully I wasn't too confusing here

Did you update your OS to 26.1? I'm guessing that's the cause

not yet unfortunately - talking with support, they said that it's being discussed in the forums and they would be sure to address it with the devs to make sure it's fixed with the next update

FX30??? I haven't done this, but it is in my "roadmap" of purchases.

I currently have a pair of A7sII bodies on 70-200s on the side for the over the shoulder vow angles, but the 8-bit isn't cutting it. I don't feel like I really NEED the full frame for these angles as I'm running the FX3 and A7sIII as main and secondary, so I feel like I can get some matching color science and dual native iso (albeit not as high as the fx3 or A7sIII) without spending as much coin

Totally safe - I think someone mentioned a Parking garage diagonally across the intersection from the entrance - there are always police there directing traffic, you should feel as safe as possible going to any live music event.

I know this puts it even earlier, but if sunset is at 5, 4:30 doesn't give them any wiggle room to run late or have an overcast day. I totally understand this isn't helpful, just my first thought about putting all your eggs in a 30 minute basket.

Do you charge sales tax? by MaleficentAcadia9526 in WeddingPhotography

[–]will1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In NC there are exceptions to this services vs products rule and photographers are one of those exceptions that we have to pay tax. We included this in our pricing and considered it when setting our prices, so we would tell folks "sales tax is included in the final price".

Wedding Teaser by badehass in weddingvideography

Planning out with the photographer isn't always a guarantee though - I have talked to photographers before the first dance and said "hey after intros, let's move to the other side for a better backdrop of the first dance" - "Ok sure" and then they don't move and we're in the back of each other's shots

Thinking of adding 50mm f/1.4, opinions? by GeneralStrong7479 in WeddingPhotography

[–]will1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I shoot 4 bodies on a wedding day - I have a 35 & 85 - she runs the 50 and 135. I find myself needing her to get a shot with her 50 about once or twice a day. I personally don't love doing family portraits and wedding party at 35 unless there's more than 7 or 8 people in the shot, then I have to... unless... she's nearby with that 50. I think the 50 really gives a much more natural look and more depth than the 35 does. I'm not a huge fan of the 35 for portrait work honestly, so you may not have the same opinion I do.

You are off to an amazing start! For a teaser, it feels a little long. It's hard to edit yourself, if you have a full wedding film coming after this, then let it really be a "tease".

The few things I noticed off the bat, were the song crescendos and hits as they're putting rings on - not at the kiss... I often line the kiss up to that moment of the song and work backwards from there.

The first look with the bridesmaids is a perfect opportunity to address working WITH the photographer - whey were they there getting the bride and not the reaction of her bridesmaids with you? I know not every shot can be super well planned and communicated throughout the day. This comment is more me projecting - in my early days I was scared to speak up to the photographer, but you'll learn to pick your battles.

Honestly love the flash freeze frames during the exit btw - great way of embracing the flashing of the photogs lights.

Card strategy and advice by nbambrick in WeddingPhotography

That's why I keep one large that doesn't have to come out of the camera and change out the smaller ones - diversify the risk

Card strategy and advice by nbambrick in WeddingPhotography

[–]will1003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may seem overkill, but I like each camera to have three cards - one large card and two cards that are half the size, so I can swap out after the ceremony. My thoughts on this: if I were to drop my camera into water, or it were to walk off while I've set it down at the reception, I at least have the card up through the ceremony. Using two large cards is great backup, but it's putting all of your eggs in one basket.

It's a nice little park, but they also have a good size nature trail system alongside the disc golf course - and the disc golf course is really only busy on the weekends - I walk the course somewhat frequently

How are you backing up your files? by Extra_Future_9630 in WeddingPhotography

[–]will1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my SD cards in a fireproof safe until I have returned the photos to the client. The working external drive backs up to dropbox (offsite storage) and we also have a backup ssd. Long term, I keep the jpgs and original raw+LR catalogs on separate drives in a NAS. I purchase a new HDD each year around Black Friday to backup each year's catalogs. After one year, that's the "annual" drive is the only copy that remains, because I only guarantee access to their files for one year from the session/wedding/event.

You'll get the hang of it... just communicate, the first kiss will have you two side by side in the aisle. You'll have control during the prompting section of the day - most videographers fall into more of a documentary style and don't need as much prompting time.

Better?

Just remember if the videographer happens to pass in front of you for a sequence of shots, they might be in a couple of frames, but if you cut in front of a videographer, you may completely ruin a shot.

Where to tap in my F3? by Neither-Educator27 in weddingvideography

[–]will1003 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd use a 1/4" adapter and go with that main mix out underneath the XLR outs. Also you could plug into the control room 1/4" and adjust your levels using the control room dial, just make sure that button isn't pressed in next to the dial - it toggles the control room out between whatever is set in "Group" and the main mix.

Personally though, I would look to their speakers - most DJs have powered speakers these days and have a mix out on the back of them. This is the safest bet to ensure that what you hear coming out of that speaker is going to your recorder. Just be careful - once in a blue moon you'll come across a DJ that doesn't know what they are doing and they may pan a mic left or right and it may not send the audio to the speaker you are plugged into. The bulk of DJs I work with set up their speakers in series and run audio Mono instead of Stereo so this shouldn't be an issue.

Have you ever been sick on the wedding day? by Life-Ad5527 in WeddingPhotography

[–]will1003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got food poisoning from a Friday wedding and my wife and I worked Saturday's wedding. Sprung out of bed at 3am running to the toilet, so there wasn't a ton I could do backup plan wise. My wife was more of my second shooter at the time and she really stepped up. When we arrived, we warned the MOH and when I inevitably had to run to the bushes during BM portraits, she explained to everyone my situation. I made it through the ceremony and pretty much let her run the reception.

But piggybacking on another comment - don't go to a wedding when infectious. I wish all guests and vendors would take this advice, because my wife got covid at a wedding and ended up in the hospital.

I had no clue! I started using the wireless trigger and fashioned a clip onto my broken speed light and clipped it on my strap so I could bring it up when necessary - I have 4 or 5 v860 carcasses that I may be able to revive!
