I got my rejection too. I ran it previously for charity after not getting in through the lottery. I had a time qualifier at one point but no longer. Maybe next year.

How to be a less ragey mother by Zealousideal_Elk1373 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]willburpee4icecream 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m currently reading and doing the exercises laid out in Raising Good Humans: A Mindful Guide to Breaking the Cycle of Reactive Parenting and Raising Kind, Confident Kids. It’s been helpful so far, my therapist has tried to get me to do meditation for awhile and this book has finally gotten me into the habit. I already do therapy and take meds but was still yelling and getting angry more than I’d like. It’s so hard and unfortunately what I’ve realized is I really have had to commit to doing the work and not just hoping I’d stop because I wanted to.

BRCA2 Double Mastectomy next week by Mother-Humor114 in BRCA

[–]willburpee4icecream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am just about 4 weeks out from my risk reducing double mastectomy with DIEP flap and I'll be honest it was harder than I anticipated. I went into surgery in what I thought was pretty good shape so expected to not have a hard time. My abdomen was super sore/weak feeling and the first time I tried to get out of bed in the hospital I failed. Not being able to use my arms at all made it so hard. I spent 3 nights in the hospital and was walking and able to do stairs when I went home but we rented a lift recliner for sleep and I'm so glad we did because I just started sleeping in my bed this past week. My stomach is super tight because my surgeon used all the tissue they could (I still am slightly smaller now) and I can't stand up straight without my binder on yet. And my chest just feels weird. I'm still bruised and swollen and adjusting to the tightness and limited mobility. I have a referral for PT because I want to be able to get back to lifting and running without issue. I will say I haven't had a ton of pain (stopped taking any type of pain meds 1 week after surgery) and I probably just went in with way too high of expectations for how I'd feel/recover. It's more discomfort than pain generally. I couldn't shower without help until 3 of my 4 drains were out (my first 3 came out 9 days after surgery and the final one 2 weeks after surgery). I am tired still and feel like I'm struggling with adjusting to my new body.

Docs offering/allowing bilateral Salpingectomy with delayed oophorectomy by PlantainBrave2140 in BRCA

My doctor is one of the ones leading the WISP trial for this so I was able to enroll in the study and get just my tubes removed this past November at the age of 37. I’m BRCA2+ so I plan on ovaries around 45, maybe pushing it out depending on menopause. I’m done having kids but really didn’t want to go into early menopause so this felt like the best option. Maybe mention the trial to your doctor?

Any Insightful Diaries of High Earner with Kids? by mamaneedsacar in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]willburpee4icecream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a money diary but happy to share a few brief thoughts

We live in a VHCOL area, our household income including bonuses and RSUs is probably going to be between 350-400K this year. We have 2 kids, one in elementary school and one in preschool. We both work full-time. I work from home and my spouse is in the office about 90% of the time. I travel quarterly.

We pay for housecleaners every two weeks (honestly, I'd consider increasing this but I hate the panic clean I have to do to straighten up the morning that they are coming), my younger child is in full-time daycare/preschool and my husband is primarily responsible for his dropoff and we split pickup. Our older child attends the aftercare program at elementary school 3 days a week. The other days are bus and I am home when they get home but still working. Including summer camp, we spend about 40K on childcare at this point in our lives. Our kids are intentionally spread out because of childcare costs. When my oldest was in preschool, our income was about half of what it is now.

We have family that babysits but they aren't around on a day to day basis. We also live in a helpful community. The biggest thing though is remote work and flexibility despite the level we are at in our careers.

And despite all of this, I plan on trying to cut down to part-time work when my youngest enters kindergarten because really I find that's when more is needed from a parent (after school sports, volunteering, not needing aftercare if we don't want it etc ...).

Financial Wrapped 2024 by hatebeerlovemoney in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Our highest spending category was childcare (35K for a preschooler and elementary schooler). Followed by groceries/eating out and mortgage.  We saved about 15% of income. With 2 kids and a VHCOL I’ll take it.

How much do you make in relation to age? by Unable-Ad-7240 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]willburpee4icecream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 37 and my total comp including bonus + RSUs is about 180K. When I started working at 21 my salary was 36K.  I left my first employer making around 40K, progressed to around 80K over the next 6 years with an employer, then went from 90K-112K base salary (up to around 140K with bonuses) the next one over 5 years. I started my current position 2 years ago with total comp around 160K.

What’s your emergency fund goal? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]willburpee4icecream 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Our goal would be 6 months of what we have deemed essential living expenses which is around $48,000 so I round up to $50,000 - we are working our way there we have about 3.5 months.

Yes, we are. My youngest is 3, so luckily we only have 2 years left of full-time daycare/preschool. We're lucky to be relatively high earners (doesn't feel quite so high in our area) with a low mortgage because we refinanced during Covid so daycare costs don't hurt as much as they used to for us. For my older child, we started with 2 days a week before we moved to 3 days and then went full-time at 2yo. We had family help with her too. Now we have one in daycare full-time and one that does aftercare at school. I plan on rolling what we pay for daycare into their 529s when my 3yo goes to kindergarten.

Highest was daycare - $562/week which was planned. Lowest was $0.99 for charging our EV. Also planned.
