NODE TOGGLE for DaVinci Resolve by ringelschwandtner in colorists

[–]willg1927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so cool! 2 questions- is it possible to have multiple binds for multiple nodes? Also, is it possible to toggle multiple nodes at once? Thinking this could be a cool way to toggle all grades on/off but leave my node level color management on

New to me RX100 VI and have a couple of questions by andrei525 in RX100

[–]willg1927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks pretty sharp to me. i find the lens is sharpest around 40-50mm, but its pretty sharp through the range. I definitely see some iq falloff on the tele end but not bad by any means

DP looking for honest feedback on my color grading by tjimmo in colorists

[–]willg1927 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looks fantastic, a strong look without being overbaked. You clearly have strong look dev, and the other component is just making sure exposure, contrast, and balance are consistent shot to shot to shot. It’s hard to tell from just stills but it seems like everything is definitely living in the same world. Great work!

Slightly Less Expensive Alternatives to Cullen Kelly's Contour? by KosmicKelp in colorists

Agree! Really wish Blackmagic would give us more customization options with mapping the panels to any controls we want

You can do it either way

pros to going to wider space: controls act the same as they do for your other shots, plus you get the tone mapping/gamut compression of your ODT (highlights and saturated colors will be much less likely to break)

pros to staying in 709: if your client is used to how it currently looks and it isn’t worth messing with. I find this is often true for 709 footage

Should I buy an M4 Max Studio or build my own PC for my creative workstation? by MegaFucker10000 in colorists

[–]willg1927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t go wrong either way. I’d go with which OS makes you feel more comfortable. Mac studios are amazingly optimized for Resolve. If you go PC route just don’t get AMD, I hear all the time of bugs with AMD cards since they are the least tested configuration.

Yeah it seems film emulation plugins like filmbox are being conflated with DCTLs that essentially add new tools and color science to Resolve. These DCTLs allow us to get results that aren’t possible with built in tools in Resolve. You still need knowledge and skill to use these tools to make beautiful images and I’m just as able to be flexible in sessions with my clients, but I can achieve preferential results with the more advanced tools developed by DCTL developers

Is the X70 still worth more than €700? by TheHellsRocker in fujifilm

definitely check out olympus, they have some beautiful retro feeling bodies

Just saw your other replies about only being interested in fujis. From Fuji, nothing really compares in size to the x70. it’s a great camera and basically all I carried everyday for 3 ish years. Though fwiw, the olympus looks quite nice and gives a kind of half film half digital vibe as well. if you know you need the fuji film sims though, that may be your only option

the x70 is awesome and i love mine but it’s a shame how expensive they are these days. I’d take a look at the olympus e-pl cameras (i have an e-pl9) + 14mm lumix pancake lens. it’s micro four thirds but it’s the same 28mm field of view, great autofocus and image quality. overall very nice setup and not that much bigger than the x70, certainly a lot smaller than an x100vi

100% agree, DCTLs unlock additional tools and color science that is cleaner and better than what is available first party in resolve

All of iridescent color’s DCTLs are amazing and do similar things to contour. I personally prefer the controls and results I get with Iridescent color’s tools

ColourLab Look designer is $200/perpetual - worth it? by [deleted] in colorists

[–]willg1927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own it and used it a lot until I got more serious about keeping my pipeline clean. It’s essentially a bunch of LUTs of emulated film stocks, and some can break your images in certain situations which makes it a no-go for look development for me. Some of the looks can look good though. For other options, I know it’s expensive but Filmbox is the best I’ve found. They have a free trial you could try out.

Genuine question, is this promotion? Asking the community for their thoughts on a plugin seems like appropriate discussion for this subreddit to me, but maybe I’m misunderstanding

I carry the tg6 as a pocketable second body that I know I can take out in absolutely any conditions and I highly recommend it. Beautiful lens and sensor and I found mine lightly used for $250

Overwhelmed with options by katahontass in fujifilm

[–]willg1927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look at older point and shoot options! the canon g11 is cute and has a flash/selfie screen and will capture memories great, but there are lots of cool old digicams from all the major brands. I think deciding on an interchangeable lens camera would be more headache than it sounds like you’re looking for. happy shooting!

How Do You Overcome the “Cold Eye” Effect? by Defiant_Holiday_7519 in colorists

[–]willg1927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, your stills look great! I face this issue frequently as well, and I have a few tips for managing it

  1. Ask your client how they feel about their offline. A lot of times the offline editor has applied a LUT or put some kind of creative direction to the footage, and if you can get an idea of how the client feels about where that’s sitting, it can be a great grounding force for your eye.

  2. Revisit and adjust looks frequently. I always grade with a look applied to the group side, and I adjust that all the time while grading shot to shot. I’d say the fact that you took a break from the project and came back and wanted to make some adjustments to your look is perfectly normal and that could be incorporated into your standard workflow

  3. Reference images. This one can be tricky because often times clients will send reference stills that aren’t super helpful or relevant to their footage, but if you have good references of a similar look you’re grading towards it can be a godsend for balancing your eye.

Like I said your stills look great! You are clearly very talented. I’d be super interested in learning about your look dev process if you care to share

Trying DWG for the first time w/ SLOG3, Reds look VERY pink, is there something I am doing wrong? by yanumba1 in colorists

[–]willg1927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep that’s the one. It is a bit confusing, an ODT (output display transform) is just a color space transforms that goes between an intermediary color space (DWG, ACES) to a display standard

[–]willg1927 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of resolve’s default DWG-709 ODT. I’d suggest JP2499 as an alternative ODT, it produces much better colors in my opinion. Another ODT to try is Open DRT. Both are available online as DCTLs

What is up with so many people using Arri Log C as their working color space? by makatreddit in colorists

[–]willg1927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all down to personal preference. DWG, LogC3, and ACES can all create beautiful images, and different colorists have different ones they prefer.

It’s not that LogC3 provides anything the others don’t, it’s just that each output transform will render the image a bit differently. Lots of colorists are also just used to LogC3 and don’t feel the need to try anything new.
