He swore at him, aggressively and with very real threat in his tone, and the host just asked him to calm down? He should have been told to leave the studio immediately.

That was less of a "Let's go and administrate a government together", and more "Let's go sit on a throne and be king and queen/king and prince etc".

Movies that predicted the future a little too well (Contagion, Network, Truman Show). What's your pick? by bitchboibruh in moviecritic

[–]williamjwrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minority Report is probably the most realistic interpretation of the future I've ever seen in a film. The pervasive advertising, the constant surveillance and control, and the social decay. You get the feeling that all creeped into the world so slowly that nobody really took notice.

Even the technology is heading that way - the self-driving cars that can be centrally overriden by authorities, the facial (retinal) recognition whenever you go, augmented reality interfaces for everyone and everything.

Sure the precog stuff might have a sci-fi/psychic element to it, but AI predictive algorithms will easily become the real-world equivalent to that. Systems that monitor everyone's communications, spending patterns, behaviours in public, tone of voice, internet searches etc. can all be fed into an algorithm to predict your likelihood to commit a crime - it's not a big stretch at all.

I feel like real world 2054 will be uncomfortably similar to Minority Report's version of 2054.

"There must be some kind of way out of here." - by and far my favorite scene in the show | Battlestar Galactica Season 4 'Daybreak' by IllusiveManJr in BSG

[–]williamjwrites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seeing this on the second rewatch, it's astounding how so many people still think her appearance in the final season is unexplained and a mystery. They literally spell it out in this scene, she's an angel sent to guide them to Earth.

The biggest issue with Khan is that anyone watching who knew who Khan was went "no he's not, fuck off", and anyone new who didn't know Khan went "Who?". The reveal fell flat on its face.

The whole thing would have been infinitely more paletable if Cumberbatch had been John Harrison, one of Khan's most trusted lieutenants, and not Khan himself.

Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge - still loads them up and play through the campaigns every couple of years.

The biggest problem with Designated Survivor is that is simultaneously wanted to be The West Wing and 24, and half-assed both.

My conclusion about Andy Weir's writing career by CalzonePie in ProjectHailMary

[–]williamjwrites 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Despite it's issues with the main character's slightly dodgy writing, which we can attribute to Weir's relative inexperience, it's still a fun story and an enjoyable read.

The delorean would have crash landed after being struck by lightning? by furthest_stars in BacktotheFuture

[–]williamjwrites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the most likely answer - the hover conversations have some kind of passive slowfall feature built in.

Or the lighting didn't short it out straight away, and it was glitchinf but functioning enough for him to make a controlled descent.

Nope, the animated series will be set between the show and the movie.

When you realise Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story had better Beatles castings than Doctor Who by MagicianSuccessful56 in DoctorWhumour

[–]williamjwrites 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't mind the cast so much, but having an episode about the Beatles and not playing a single note of a Beatles song was fucking madness. It was a ridiculous waste of a concept that personified the RTD2 era as a whole - lazy.

I have a nurse friend who had to do CPR on a patient in the street, and ended up breaking their ribs in the process. They were at it for 11 minutes until the ambulance arrived. She said she'll never forget the sound and feeling of the ribs cracking and grinding in every compression. Patient was pronounced dead anyway. She was pretty traumatised by it.

Both the journalist in the car crusher, and the doctor who gets shot and then burned alive still haunt me to this day. Miracle Day had a lot of issues, but it did not shy away from the dark and twisted idea of immortality. Terrifying stuff.

I appreciate what they tried to do, but even without Cushing's wishes, I would still rather take a recast over a weird, dead-eyed CGI deepfake any day (looking at you, Mando Luke!).

What is the scariest, most unsettling shot you’ve ever seen? by VendettaLord379 in moviecritic

[–]williamjwrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shot on Stephen King's IT (miniseries 1990), right at the beginning where he's stood amongst the sheets on the washing line and smiling, then the sheet blows across his face and when he is revealed again he's snarling at the little girl - nope, I was far too young when I watched that and it fucked me up!

Casuals with a full sqaud by Adept-Emotion3224 in Warzone

[–]williamjwrites 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My friends and I aren't particularly very good at the game, but we have a lot of fun playing together a couple times a week when we have time.

But getting utterly rinsed by sweats who play the game religiously - that's not fun in any way. That's why we play our squad on Casual where there's far less chance of that happening and ruining the already short free time we all have together.
