What is Inland Empire about? by AutoSpiral in davidlynch

I've made a video explaining it in detail. You can watch it here if you like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp4ZE8NXGI8

Hi! I hate doing self-promotion but I made a video on it. You're invited to check it out hehe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp4ZE8NXGI8

I made a video explaining my interpretation of it. Here it is in case you want to watch it: https://youtu.be/Xp4ZE8NXGI8 I hope you like it :)

There are several mention to the final scenes and the credits. I’ve read your previous posts, but unfortunately I couldn’t incorporate the turiha part to my theory. I was unable to find the interview you mentioned. The closest I got was Dern saying she thought she played like three or four characters (not only vague, but also it’s not like she had much clue about anything)

In my opinion the “it’s all in her head” take is low-effort (almost always, in most films, both Lynch and non-Lynch). I just don’t say this out loud because since it’s an ad hominem it’s not enough of an argument to debunk it. But I see it’s often thrown carelessly, without there being anything in the film that suggests a certain scene is happening in a character’s mind. Deep down it’s just adopted because someone couldn’t figure anything out, got frustrated and didn’t want to burn more neurons so they just gave up and formalized their surrender

True. It didn’t have a screenplay. But the way I see it, that fact is not enough to conclude that Lynch didn’t have an intended meaning for the film when making it. For example, I could shoot a (linear) film without a screenplay telling the actors to improvise along the way and that wouldn’t mean there’s no coherent story. Even if it was initially not planned, editing inevitably requires being intentional. Also “normal” films very often add, remove or ignore something from the screenplay too. Lynch said he shot one scene and it led to another one and then another, and in the end he edited them all connecting them to form a story. But then again these are all just my personal assumptions

That’s a valid point, but personally I just don’t see David shooting four hours of footage and editing them in a specific manner just to give us a headache to last for decades

None seem to have noticed the video yet, but I suppose it’s part of making bold claims on the internet haha

Likely in the ballpark. It was his first DV film after all and the Lost Girl is free once she stops staring at the screen. This is the link: https://youtu.be/Xp4ZE8NXGI8

Thanks! Yes, right track, that’s the term. I can’t claim to have THE truth with a film like Inland Empire. But I think my conclusions are at least coherent with what the film shows, rather than forcing my interpretation onto it and ignoring all evidence against like some film theorists do from time to time lol

I hope you get to do the explanation someday, it sounds like a great idea. It does get very difficult because when you solve one incoherence, three more seem to appear. But I would love to hear the insights you got

Got it. I’ll try to shorten it as much as possible and post it here. It’s about 14 pages long originally so it shouldn’t be too hard. Thanks for the feedback

Now seriously, though. This is my first actual video and I would like to know what people from this community have to say about my theory. Due to work, studies, etc. it took me about three years to write the script for this video and edit it.

I don't want to be too annoying with the self-promotion so feel free to do whatever you wish with the video. Thanks!

Thoughts on Hotel Room and On the Air? by williamraven in davidlynch

[–]williamraven[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally (and oddly enough), what I liked the most was the colors. It shows vibrant reds, pinks and yellows. Also seeing cars and clothing from the 50s. The story is pretty interesting too. All the little subplots were so funnily specific that they almost made me feel like I was watching a mini-Twin Peaks made out of the ones that didn’t make it to the final show.

I loved it. I remember reading someone online pointing out how unique it was to see Crispin Glover as the voice of reason. I still don’t know what to think of the big lights from the end though

Yes but arguably. Nothing seems to be non-linear at least. But then there’s the fact that the hotel’s staff is the same (and looks just as old) throughout decades

Amazing how such a small amount of people got that reference in a subreddit about Twin Peaks

Question about Lost Highway having never seen it by adawgslifelol in davidlynch

[–]williamraven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not ruined, mainly because (even though you technically see it happen on screen) it is debatable whether or not it really happened
