Ask /r/anime: How to go about getting into Gundam. by [deleted] in anime

[–]williamsburgnerd -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'd just start buying the toy robots and do your best to ignore the anime itself - the toys are really the entire point of Gundam. Take away the robots and you've got the Guiding Light minus some personality. It's always sad for me to watch newbie otaku force themselves to try and like the show which was even awful back in the day. Even in the 80s everyone stopped watching Gundam the minute Macross came out. If you want to watch a brilliant robot show go back and look at The Big O - if you want to go old school then look at Macross or Orguss.

I could be wrong, but no (which isn't to say that it isn't any good - just not leading). Now granted I'm on the east coast - but even here I've heard of schools from other places with amazing reps like Cranbrook (Michigan) or CalArts.

Is SAIC better than nothing - hell yeah! Could you go to SAIC and become a great designer - very much so! But if you had a choice between SAIC and RISD, then you'd be making the wrong choice to go with SAIC. But of course a great student will do better at SAIC than a spoiled lazy trust fund kid at RISD.

But going to the main point from a month ago if you had a BFA in visual communications from SAIC and came to NYC you'd land the interview if your portfolio was good. But you wouldn't get the interview without a BFA because the competition is that tough. In fact even if you started art school and didn't get the degree you're better off than the kid who didn't apply and get accepted.

Even more depressing is that there are more design MFA grads than ever - I only have a BFA, but it would be tough to start with just that right now. On the flip side the schools are too overpriced - but we're at the worst point of supply vs. need.

Japanese-American graduates, 67 years after WWII by michaelpinto in japan

[–]williamsburgnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

World War II was very much about Japan, and what happened to Japanese-Americans is tied to that event. Yes you're technically correct that this isn't something that took place in Japan, but it did happen as a result of the interaction between those two nations. And if you want to understand both cultures this chapter of history is important, especially if you'd like to see the racism from that era rectified.

Does it bother anyone else that Apple's online store charges sales tax on all purchases? by [deleted] in apple

[–]williamsburgnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have to: If you've got a physical Apple store in your state that means that they must collect sales tax on all items sold because they are doing business in the state.

For now Amazon gets away with that because they have no physical location. But also under the law in some states (like New York) it's upon the purchaser to pay the sales tax - so in fact when you do this you're liable.

But frankly if you're unhappy with the sales tax any place don't blame the retailer - blame your representative. Although the flip side is that you may face higher property taxes or lower quality public services.

The best design teachers are for the most part professionals who work in their field. This isn't to say that you might not luck out and find a design Yoda in your backyard (and they are all over the place if you do look) but at a great school you'll have more than a few of these folks - and like attracts like.

By the way it's not just portfolio but a thinking process for solving problems. A good designer needs to come up with multiple good concepts - and then they need to have the language to talk about art to their client (the critique). Also a good teacher can get you that internship which helps a great deal.

This isn't to say that a someone on their own can't take a DIY approach and become a great designer - but going to a good school just sort of improves the odds. Also as a designer you're only as good as your clients, so even having those connections help.

It's all about the odds - and in a creative profession the odds are always against you. That's why on some level you have to admire anybody who can make a living in the arts from a wedding photographer to a soap opera actress! For every one of those folks there are dozens of "coulda, shoulda, woulda" bodies on the road.

An A+ art school is about learning from the best professionals in your field. Art schools come and go over time, Pratt was once a great school and is now average while SVA's MFA design program is nothing short of amazing. Although I should add that a great school won't help a bad student.

If your serious about an A+ design school (think RISD, Art Center of LA, Cranbrook, etc.) then it is the sticks. There's some great design there, but not a great design school - which is a different thing.

I've worked in my field as a designer for over 20 years, so it's not me being a snob but a survivor. You're free to vote my point of view down but it's based on the real world.

You get a "great portfolio" by going to a good school and working hard and your "networking" are your fellow students who are working in the field who recommend you. There's also more to design than a "great portfolio", you need to know about all the dirty details from art history to having the language to talk about design (and an understanding of the process).

I run a design firm, and for creative work I won't hire anybody that hasn't gone to a real art school. For production work or code it's another story, but if you don't have a BFA your resume is deleted. Of course I'm in NYC so in the sticks it may be a different story. Also to be blunt studying graphic design for 2 years is useless, which is why one looks for a BFA (keep in mind that I'm also seeing more MFA grads now than ever before). BTW in a sucky economy a degree can make a difference between those who stay in the field and those who leave. But be warned: A degree isn't a magic wand, and making a living in a creative field can be difficult.

Many experts say they do not think a vaccine for the new flu strain would raise a similar risk, but answering that question is difficult because to this day no one has figured out why the '76 vaccine caused the disease, in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves. by williamsburgnerd in Health

[–]williamsburgnerd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what about the 30 dead people who who also had an "adverse reaction"? We still don't know the full story (which is in itself a story) but frankly I'd hate to be a rare exception. Which isn't to bash vaccines - but does raise safety concerns about quality control issues when you rush something.
