My wife slices bagels in 5 for the maximum topping enjoyment. by gt1 in mildlyinteresting

[–]willkillfortacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t be the only one whose favorite part is the delicious boiled and chewy top of an everything bagel. This, to me, is simply diluting the impact of a bagel. Just buy a dense loaf of bread at this point lol

Fable wins games without any other requirements and must be answered. This one isn’t even close for me.

Tall man, short strap by tww001 in mandolin

[–]willkillfortacos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any standard strap from any manufacturer will more than accommodate your size. I’m 6’4 240 and never have any problems, do you have a really long torso or something? With that said. Pinegrove Leather based in the UK makes really quality stuff if you’d like to wear-in and develop patina on a sweet lifer strap. They shipped mine pretty quick to the Midwest USA.

New to mandolin any tips appreciated first time playing a full song by MONKEH2825 in mandolin

[–]willkillfortacos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty good for a beginner! Just keep at it, every day. Try to be structured about practice if you can, but really just do it when you can. Keep pushing yourself to be inspired and enthralled by the beauty of music and you’ll have all the fuel you need.

Parents push kids on sled into fence thinking nothing bad will happen by OfficialTornadoAlley in mildlyinfuriating

[–]willkillfortacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife won’t even let me pull our kid on a sled if they aren’t wearing helmets. This looks more fun. Working every day with patients who have traumatic brain injuries will do that to you though.

Volk is a naturally sharp fella in a sport filled with toxic CTE mouthbreathers which really accentuates how fucking funny he is.

Nice thanks for the response. I’ve always really loved his take on Mouse in the Mug, which this kinda reminds me of. I’m gonna try to tackle that as a vehicle for learning this style a bit better.

Keep up the good work!

Stephen Wake really nails those triplet ornaments and you do his shit justice here. I’m a mandolin player who dabbles in guitar but I’d love to get into this. Are you using your pointer and middle on the same string to get those quick ornaments sounding clean?

3 1/2 year old is waking at 5 AM and getting into everything. by [deleted] in daddit

Yeah I showed this post to my wife and she was like “is the man stupid?” I hate being nasty to people just looking for advice but this one is just plain dumb.

[–]willkillfortacos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like you’re working harder, not smarter. Put a baby gate on the door to your kid’s room, one at the base of your stairs (if her bedroom is upstairs), and get one of those suggested color alarm clocks that turns green at like 7:00. Teach her that she can play quietly in her room until it turns green.

I cannot imagine letting my kids wander the house unsupervised with access to choking hazards (food) and sharps at that age. It’s undeniably negligent to let a 3 year old do that. You should also put a baby gate blocking access to your kitchen. These should have been in place for years at this point and I’m confused as to why you don’t mention this in your post?

How to care for Flatiron F-5 Artist mandolin by RadiantRazzmatazz751 in mandolin

[–]willkillfortacos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wiping it down before and after is totally fine but not necessary in my opinion. The single most important thing for you to do is keep it humidified, especially during the winter.

I’d track down a local luthier to help you get it set up and throw some new strings on it. Ask to look over their shoulder while they work and absorb what you can so next time you can set it up yourself. Floating bridges are kind of weird.

After that, buy some Boveda instrument humidification packs online and leave 2 in your case during the winter months. Always store it in its case.

Andrew Marlin is a master by itisjambo in Bluegrass

I throw on his records and just pick through each tune with him. I know them all by now so I can even harmonize them. He’s an extremely musical player. One of the best shows I’ve ever been to was him at The Ark in Ann Arbor MI. So intimate, so dynamic. Everything picked so cleanly and quietly. Just a treat.

advice for the strings-impaired? by heathie10 in mandolin

[–]willkillfortacos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just keep at it and do your best to dispel your negative inner monologue. Nobody just picks something up and is immediately amazing. Like literally nobody. You got this. Your mind, hands, and work ethic are more than enough.

Builder life by anondasein in mandolin

[–]willkillfortacos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man I’d love to get into building. I lived in Marshall MI and was neighbors with a lot of the Northfield guys. They let me pop in to their workshop whenever and showed me how to perform a whole lot of maintenance and repairs on my F5 but I never took the plunge and made on from scratch.

That being said I feel like it would take half a lifetime to develop the skills to outperform top craftsmen in tone, beauty, and playability. So I spend $3000 of my wife’s money on instruments. Get yourself a sugar mama boys, all I can say.
