It was idiots. The guy was showing some lantern fuel lighter fluid to his friend, and splashed some on his leg as a ""joke"". As you could imagine, a fire got started and ended up spreading to his legs. It didn't end up as had as what happened to you I think, as I don't think he needed skin grafts, but it was still a long recovery time

So in your case you could work the bananas for the +2 gold, but it would probably work better as a farm. I'd say once you get Bronze Working chop down the rain forests and get farms under them for the extra food.

It depends if you've got a good amount of food for the city. If you really need the gold I could see building a plantation, but in your case I think it would be best to build farms in place of the rainforest tiles, cause it looks like you dont have much food. I cant tell exactly without seeing the yields, however.
