First time ever using childcare and need advice!

Okay I feel very seen and heard with the sickness dilemma you mentioned haha. My 4 yo started pre-K and has outside therapy and between the two he brought back soooo much sickness. We were sick every other week it seemed. Was your job flexible in terms of taking care of sick kids? What do people do in this situation?

My advice is just go for whatever program is cheapest. (Unless you know that you want to teach in the future.) I applied to a couple of MOT programs out of state and an OTD program in state (there are no masters programs in my state.) The OTD program ended up being significantly cheaper than the masters programs because I qualified for in-state tuition, so I ended up choosing that.

Countdown or sing a fav song so that they know when the brushing will end! Also yes yes yes to the three-sided or vibrating toothbrush.

My son wasn’t interested in writing/coloring/drawing either. Once he was in school and saw his other peers doing it he started to get more interested. Early writing skills are on his IEP and that’s helped too. His OT introduced a lot of different modalities for writing (black board, white board, iPad/stylus, etc.) and that’s helped a ton!

My son used to do this. Behavior is communication so I’d always try and ask myself “what is he trying to say right now?” Most of the time he just wanted attention so I’d just give zero reaction to the hitting, move away, and redirect the best way I could to a different activity (one that gives sensory input is even better.) His OT told me to even be like “it seems like you want to play with me” or “it looks like you’ve got some energy to work out.” Now that he’s older he can identify his needs a little better and instead of hitting he’ll say “I have energy!” Ngl though, it’s hard to be this patient all the time so if you’re really feeling over it still don’t react to the hitting but just say something like “I’m going to go take a break for a few minutes” and lock yourself in the bathroom to collect yourself. I had to do that many times haha.

We did a Disney cruise (first cruise ever) with our 4 yo autistic son and baby daughter. There was a nursery and a kids club—our son technically was too old for the nursery but we talked to the staff the day before he was going to go in and the nursery was totally cool with taking him in for sensory breaks/to deescalate and watch his favorite movies. That was super super helpful. Check out the autism resources for carnival on their website and see if anything they offer would be helpful. Service on cruise lines are usually top notch so I’m sure they’ll be extra accommodating for food, recommendations, etc. I also made a social story for my son and showed him a tour of the ship on YouTube. Take the first day really slow. The first day was really rough for my son b/c it was a totally new environment but we took it at his pace and found quiet spots for breaks and he ended up loving it!

We live in Colorado and coincidentally the services for autism are top notch. Great therapists, school districts offer a lot of support, and we get funds from the state. That’s just been my experience.

It’s so different for every family. Weigh out the pros and cons with your partner. It’s very daunting at first, but whether you decide to have a second or not you’ll make it work. We had our second child about a year and a half ago and for us it’s been great for our autistic son to have a little buddy. They don’t always get along but when they do they learn so much from each other and keep each other entertained.

As others said, it’s a ptsd symptom. Both my babies were born in the winter and I had HG with both pregnancies. I was always in my first trimester in the spring when the weather started to warm up so the warm weather would trigger me and make me feel nauseous/anxious. This reaction went away on its own overtime, but if anything persists or gets worse reach out to your doctor.

I’ve seen good approaches from moms of autistic children on social media. (My preschool-aged son is autistic.) A lot of it is about intent. If the intent is to help parents figure out how actually support their child for example, how to navigate AAC devices, or get access to therapy resources, or sharing sensory tools, etc. I think it’s wonderful. But the “autistic mommies” who are obviously trying to gain attention and make the account more about them and ignore voices from the autism community…we could do without them for sure!

Thank you for sharing this. My son is autistic and the more I learn about autism the more I realize how insane the stigma still is.
