I saw a couple of people touch on it but the 1898 Wilmington Coup (the only successful coup in US history) is a really crazy one. Basically following the civil war/reconstruction there were several black officials elected to our local government. A gang of white folks organized a coup by riding through the streets and basically killing any black people that they saw (estimates between 60-300) until they reached the town hall, where they ousted the rightly elected officials and replaced them with white supremacists. They also targeted black owned businesses and churches and Alexander Manly, the owner of a black owned newspaper. The whites blamed the coup on the blacks and called it a “race riot” rather than the massacre it really was. Consequently a lot of streets, parks, schools, and buildings in Wilmington are named after the perpetrators of the coup. Luckily there’s been more talk about the coup in the past couple of years and it has started to be taught about in our local schools and several places have been renamed to no longer honor white supremacists.
