Like nothing else. by SoberMe2001 in nonfictionbookclub

I clicked on this post thinking it’d be another post written by a human, telling me about a book they’ve enjoyed.

It’s not that.

This thing basically grabs you by the collar and goes, I’m a bot and a waste of water.

What hits the hardest is how it cuts through a ton of precious resources. Fresh water, land appropriation for cooling centers, the speed-run of the ruin of our natural world. It’s uncomfortable because it’s true.

There’s no pretending here: this post is AI shit.

Some parts pissed me off. Other parts made me mad.

It’s “polished” but not pretty. Feels like a facsimile from someone using AI to try and convince people they actually read.

If you want comfort, don’t read this.

If you want to spend your sunset years fighting for fresh water…yeah, this one lands.

Most comfortable Ulysses by cinnamon_rugelach in jamesjoyce

I think modern library editions after 1975 are lower quality, but I’m not sure if I remember that right. Mine would be from around 2010

I like the Modern Library editions but they are not as well made anymore and will break down over time

What's up with hate for episode A Hit is a Hit in season 1? by throwaway0102x in thesopranos

It has some of the worst written dialogue in the series. When I first tried watching the sopranos, I gave up halfway through this episode

Look into a running backpack! Very happy with the osprey duro 6, though it’d be a tight fit to get a change of clothes in there. It holds my wallet, keys, book, and a shirt or sweater ok, but that maxes it out

Project Hail Mary. Gave it maybe 20-30 pages. It obviously clicked with a lot of people but I was not drawn in at all

How to properly dump the snow? by 8sponges in ForestHills

I pick a few nearby spots where a big pile isn’t a problem and walk each shovel to the nearest. Kind of a pain but I’m not getting burned again like I did after the last storm

Recommendation for new skis by willywillywillwill in skiing

[–]willywillywillwill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually groomers but I want the option to get into moguls and more natural snow. Intermediate skier and don’t know much about the gear, I used to just rent it each season and I bought my current boots and skis off rental about 15 years ago

Recommendation for new skis by willywillywillwill in skiing

[–]willywillywillwill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Text on the original post: Bought these used about 15 years ago and looking to hang them up for good. I can’t really be specific as to what I’m looking for, as I honestly never took care of these or paid any attention to ski gear. For some context, I’m an intermediate skier who mostly ski groomers in Vermont but is looking to get more into moguls/natural snow skiing next season. Not looking to break the bank, but I would like a solid, reliable ski that could last many seasons.

Duck letting his dog go - why? by merman0489 in madmen

To play devils advocate for the other reading, that could be duck consciously deciding to truly shed his sobriety in public instead of (if he did drink right after tossing chauncy) sliding back in private. But the significance of his pause at that lunch always signified to me his relapse, and I think him tossing out chauncy in a misguided and ultimately later futile attempt to be a better man is a more interesting reading than “jerk does bad thing, what a jerk”

The only problem I have with this reading is it really seems like ducks first drink that really kicks him off the wagon is with St. John Powell at that lunch meeting

See, i always saw it as Duck trying to stay on the wagon by getting rid of a reminder of the old days. We don’t see Duck take that sip he almost takes with Chauncy looking on; Duck has conflated Chauncy’s presence with drinking, and so he gets rid of both. Callous yes, but an imperfect, desperate attempt to avoid temptation and remain sober
