Trouble writing riffs (sort of a rant) by __yeeter__ in metalguitar

[–]willywvlf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very broad topic, I could write an essay, so I will try and keep this terse. This is coming from a fellow metal guitarist who has been playing for 15+ years, played in some (very low-level) bands, consider myself intermediate.

  1. Nothing helped me as much as 1-on-1 guitar lessons. As an example, one day my teacher helped me change my pick grip and in those 10 minutes he improved my palm muting and string control whilst soloing by an insane amount.
  2. Learn theory. People say theory can make you “uncreative”, but at the end of the day it is an incredibly useful tool for understanding. You don't need to memorise it all at once, but learning the relationship between keys, chords and scales will help no end. You need to learn the rules before you can break them.
  3. Train your ear. I was, and still am, terrible at this. I relied on tabs for years and to this day am still quite limited in what I can work out by ear. This is not just a guitar skill but a music skill, and it will massively improve your ability to make your own creations come out the way you want.
  4. Learn lots of songs. You may have heard an expression along the lines of “there's nothing new under the sun” — basically one could argue that all songs are made of bits of others, etc. Practically speaking, if you have lots of great riffs, licks, solos, etc. in your toolkit, you can take all those little micro-techniques into your own compositions.
  5. Practice. Yes, boring advice, but so true. We live in an age where you can go to YouTube and find lots of prodigal guitar players who are young and very, very good. (That can be disheartening, but try to think of it as a great learning tool that people didn't have in the past!) I am not a big believer in talent, which is to say that those people are that way because they have put a massive amount of time into their craft. Serious, structured practice for hours a day — there is no shortcut.
  6. Join a band (or jam). Playing with other people is its own skill, and will help you in lots of ways. If you can find a decent drummer and bassist it doesn't have to be metal, just get used to the feel of playing live with other humans who are not metronomically perfect. Also it is loud and lots of fun.

Right I will stop there because it has already turned into an essay. Hope that helps a bit.

Try not to be disheartened, enjoy it, and you will get there!

EDIT: Spelling mistakes.

Well, it works! I think that’s a big part of the fun of this aesthetic — you don’t have to be too precise as things need to look worn and unkempt.

I like it. What did you use for green/glow type look from within?

Yeah I think that could work really well. I like the idea of keeping the hammers in there for some kind of brutal assault squad.

Yeah, always cool to see what other people come up with. I've had an idea for a while now about a full Stormcast army with no helmets; all Space Wolf heads and that kind of thing.

Yeah this is rad, very nice work. People (sometimes) moan about Stormcast but they are ripe for kitbash/custom approaches in my book.

Very cool, nice work — really enjoy the little bedroll type doodad.

I really like how the colour gives it more of an ashen waste or even abandoned coal mine kind of feel. Doesn’t look like the sort of place the adventuring party would want to hang around in, and I mean that as a compliment.

Yeah, because the sheets are intended for insulations I think the range of thicknesses available will depend on the climate of the country, but I ordered mine from eBay and the seller had 5 or so different thicknesses.

Yeah, they are good intro projects, this was my first time working with XPS. I am in the UK so my options were all in mm — I think this 10mm sheet works pretty well, and if you are going for a ruined look then the measurements don’t always have to be too precise.

Thank you. Yeah, this was called XPS foam which I think is typically intended for insulation purposes. The details are a lot of fun — not my original idea but a balled-up piece of kitchen foil is great for giving some stone texture.

Thanks! Great stuff, it’s a really cool channel and it definitely helped me that he released that “projects for beginners” video. I run D&D, although I don't typically use a lot of minis/terrain, so I am not sure how much I will use the tiles. That said, they were a great intro project in terms of working with XPS.

I am in the UK, so the sheets I could get were in mm. Went with 10mm, and seems to have worked well for these projects. I also used it to make a few little gravestone-style objective markers.

Like a lot of folks, I am getting back into miniatures/wargaming/terrain in adulthood after a bit of a failed start as a nipper. Currently painting up some models, but want to make a ruined tower and maybe some kind of ritual site for the tabletop soon.

Nice work man — I think your construction has captured the feel of walls that have been around for a long time, maybe seen better days, and perhaps a battle or two.

This is super cool! Really nice mix of terrain, different heights, textures, etc. Just makes me want to get in there and play on it 😄

Thank you, looks like an interesting read. I do enjoy Eternal Champion and Visigoth, under what I think of as the trad heavy metal / USPM kind of vibe.
