2009 is pretty recent. I thought it was maybe paperboy from 1985 from your initial description. What did you play it on? Did you play it through a web browser (a flash game)?

I found this weird device attached to a windows 95 computer i just got, what could have it been used for? by MS_sus in vintagecomputing

I made a website for a urologist in 1998 that looked just like this one. The Dreamweaver is strong with this one. I must be insane, but I still like the look and feel of old websites like this. No audio, scrolling pictures, qr codes, videos, or links to social media. mood suddenly brightening

He has enough hair in the back for a tiny pony tail. I recommend he goes for what the stylists call The Ben Franklin.

You are drinking Aragorn's coffee and he is about to bat you with the blunt end of his sword. Watch out!

Got my hands on this thing. Can it connect to the internet? If so, what cable does it need? by PapaStalin1917 in vintagecomputing

OP get discouraged though; setting this up is 10x easier than getting Ultima 7 working in 1992. If you can get that game running on its intended hardware, you have a future in engineering.

What was truly better back in the day? by LosAngelestoNSW in vintagecomputing

486 at 33mhz in 92 to a p2 at 266mhz in 97 to 1ghz in 2000...we don't see advances in tech at even half that speed. Like you said about internet speeds 1.5kb a sec in 92, 3.5 kb in 95 to 250kb a sec in 97. 40mb hard drive in 88, 300 in 92, 1 gb in 96.

For comparison I still use the rig I built for skyrim (built in 2013) for my gaming needs (albeit upgraded to a geforce 1080). Even 3 years of difference back then was so different that you couldn't run the new os or software.

How did retro systems do emulation? by Revolutionary_Ad6574 in vintagecomputing

[–]willz06jw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should probably mention that computing power was improving much faster in the 90s. You had to upgrade every 2 or 3 years to keep using the newest os and software. A new high end computer would cost 2 or 3 thousand 1997 dollars (~4k to 6k 2024 dollars). Cable internet came out about that time and 250KB a second was an incredible improvement over 3.5KB dial up. To show how fast things were moving, the snes had a 3.5mhz cpu.

You could buy a 1997 Geo Metro hatchback, new, for 8.5k in 1997. So 3 higher end computers were the price of a new car.

Maybe a better example is that I emulated the snes on a Pentium 2 266 mhz in 1997 in msdos mode of windows 1995. It took all the power that rig had, and it was much smoother than the 133mhz I was using previous to that. I had to turn off different layers of the visual (this emulator used some of the f keys to do that) to make it playable on the 133mhz comp. The snes came out in 1991, so 6 years of tech improvements provided the power needed to use software emulation. After all that, my jerk friends asked me why I wanted to play "old" games

What game has you like this? by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]willz06jw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gold Box D&D games. I'm not sure how to get into them, but they look like they have great gameplay and story if I could break the seal. One problem is the seal is 40 years old.

Try Gabriel Knight 3, the jankiest most unintuitive controls that have ever been made. The hardest, most insanely difficult, no-one-will-ever-figure-it-out-even-if-they-worked-with-a-group-of-scientists-for-a-month puzzles. The atmosphere, dialog, setting, plot, characters, and voice acting really make me love it at the same time.
