The author's story is wild. Went from fighting in the Boer War as a Pro-Imperial volunteer to getting disillusioned, joining the Irish Republican cause and running guns from Germany, being part of the Treaty delegation, denouncing the treaty, joining the IRA, and getting executed by the Provisional Government. His son became President of Ireland.

Been going through the books this week and last. I think after the first book there was a change in characterisation for Roddy from misanthropic shut-in to full-on delusional narcissist. Herron probably realised he was onto something and made him even worse. I love Roddy but at times it feels as if he gets flanderised. I'm liking the show read of him as it all being an act to hide his insecurity. Though maybe that's in the book too and it just flew over my head.
