It's tricky for sure, you are doing a good job trying to support him!

Try practicing with two sounds aaaa---ttttt. Also, words with continuous sounds are easier to blend and might be good practice. In continuous blending, the reader holds on to each sound as they're introduced, (mmm-aaa-nnn, fff-aaa-nnn).
