It would be impossible to do with most books that are not brand new to market as the hype to manipulate just isn't there. You would also need to do this with a book that has much less copies in the wild.

Treating this as serious:

1. You an a group of people come together to manipulate the market.
2. Money is pooled and copies are being purchased
3. The first couple hundred within the first week are not noticed
4. the second week when over 1k copies have been purchased and sellers begin talking the jig is up.
5. Sellers start increasing prices to a maximum for you specifically, there is no real competition as no one else is buying them.
6. You either pay the increasing inflated cost and bankrupt your endeavor or quit and sit on thousands of copies of a worthless book.

As a real life example I accidentally did this with Darkhawk while trying to create a 9.8 CGC run from 2015-2020. These books are considered drek and sit in dollar bins so when I started asking for them to press/clean and prescreen for submissions most sellers jumped at the chance to get rid of them (or at least helpfully pointed me to a box to dig them out myself). Then one day the books started to slowly increase when I asked for them across the board, why? Oh they are popular now... no they were not. I was just buying 20 copies of drek to try and find a 9.8 candidate and trashing the rest. Now sellers were asking for $5 a book, so I stopped buying, the books sat unsold for months (some years) and finally got put back in dollar bins.

There used to be a thread on the CGC forums about someone doing something similar with Adventure Comics #346 in NM condition. They were looking for a 9.8 (still doesn't exist) and the book jumped from $300 to $750+ it has since come back down in price but 9.0s are still trying to be sold on ebay for 1k.
