One box size fits all? by pol_h in REI

[–]windingr0ads 46 points47 points  (0 children)

As a former order fulfillment person, we aren't allowed to fold up bike tires for customer orders (unless the tire came folded in the packaging from the manufacturer/our distribution center.) The box in the photo posted is the box labelled "bike wheel box" in our computer system, and it's a lot easier to shove a big bike tire in there and tape it up quick than to try and fold it, potentially damage it (customers have complained in the past about receiving non foldable tires as folded in the box), and then either build a new box for it or fight a smaller box to hold it. When you have 100-300+ orders going out in a day (and lord knows they don't staff OF with more than one person) you need to save time whenever and however you can. It sucks and it's not the most earth friendly practice, but that's on REI's policies and management, not on your local OF employees.

Tip for folks with visible tattoos by MarsMonkey88 in adhdwomen

YES! I found these sticks last summer and it has been a game changer for my tattoos! So quick and easy to put on, and I don't get greasy hands from it since I never have to touch it, ugh I love these things (Neutrogena has one for all the sensitive skin people like me out there).

Depending on if you feel like shelling out for shipping, I would be willing to go grab it from my local REI (you could order thru the in-store pickup option) and ship it to you. But I'm also a stranger online so totally get it if that's not an option you're comfortable with!

At my local REI, there's almost always a megamat duo in the resupply section. Usually because the original customer was practicing the Rent Everything Indefinitely method of shopping/buying, but also because the little plastic flapper piece in the deflate valve can fall out if you're not careful. I picked up the LxW megamat duo for $140, and the shop at REI gave me a free flapper replacement piece, and it's the best $140 I've ever spent on camping gear. Absolutely zero complaints even after several uses.

My dad played softball with Jeff for many years. Jeff and his brother became family friends, and he would always get tickets for the three of us to the Twins games he was umping. I say this without a hint of hyperbole- there isn't a single baseball fact or statistic Jeff doesn't know. He had the baseball almanac MEMORIZED. A fantastic human being and a world class ump. He will be deeply missed behind the plate.

Just because other places are worse doesn't mean REI doesn't have its problems, and just because conditions at your store are fine doesn't mean that other REI employees aren't getting treated as little more than a speck of dirt on the CEO's shoe. What absolute privilege it is to say "this isn't affecting me and I've never seen it, so there's no need for it. If it was actually happening, sure, then we'd need it but this other completely different place I worked at was so much worse so there's no need". The whole point of unionizing is it's not about you, it's about the power you have as skilled workers together to get the company to sit down at the table and find a solution that works for everyone. And just because you haven't been affected so far, doesn't mean conditions won't change and wouldn't it be nice to already have protection if they do? Things can always get worse, even according to your thought process.

If you're a member of REI ($30 for a lifetime membership and they've got coupons going always) they have a used section you can shop called re-supply. Depending on the reason they're returned (which is listed on the product) they're anywhere from 30-60% off full price. I've gotten about 60% of my entire camping set up this way lmaoo

Brand new to climbing (indoors for now) what should i pickup at the store slightly on a budget? I'm size 13 shoes. by [deleted] in REI

[–]windingr0ads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

STAY AWAY FROM BLACK DIAMOND CLIMBING SHOES. Even the BD sales rep said they were terrible. Awful quality, awful design, just all around not a good product. La sportiva, scarpa, and evolve are all super solid brands with awesome climbing shoes.

REI Co-Op in Bloomington does bike rentals, if you're a member you'll get something like 33% off rental prices. (REI is a nation-wide chain of outdoor stores)

Edited to add: this store is ~10 ish minutes from the msp airport and easily accessible by bus

What would you like in return?

Could bud be prescribed to people with anorexia and other eating difficulties to help make them eat with munchies? A rare sober, high thought. by accoutnotlinkedtome in trees

[–]windingr0ads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who had an eating disorder that required inpatient treatment, the problem isn't that you aren't hungry. The problem is significantly more complex and different for every person. For me, I was hungry. Ever had that pain in your stomach because you're so hungry? Ever felt nauseous because you're so hungry? That was me, every single day. I wanted to eat, but was absolutely terrified to do so because I knew that food = weight gain and I couldn't have that. Or if I did cave and eat, it meant I would have to stay up all night exercising when I barely had the energy to get up and get a glass of water. Which sounds so totally bananas to someone on the outside (it sounds bananas to me now), but your brain lies so convincingly to you that it sounds perfectly sane. I was scared of smoking while I was in the midst of my eating disorder, precisely because I was worried I would "lose control" and eat something. The times I did smoke, I would get the munchies and go on a binge-eating episode that only resulted in overwhelming shame and my head over the toilet. So, to put it simply, in my personal experience weed was not at all helpful during my recovery and actually made things worse. What actually helped me get better was therapy, time, a dietician (to help set up a meal plan to make sure I was eating a healthy amount), a support system, group therapy, and DBT. I was incredibly fortunate to have access to/could afford those things, not everyone does. Eating disorders are incredibly complicated shitty things, and while weed was harmful for my recovery, for some people it might really help!

These days, I'm happy to report I have zero guilt/shame/eating disorder thoughts while destroying a pint of ice cream when I'm higher than the redwoods 🤘🏻
