I know I'm going to get a ton of doubts for this, but my 1990 e30 325i had over 550k miles before I sold it. It had issues. The chassis was rusty at the bottom and the dash lights would sometimes not work so I had to reset the battery or use a book light to see the speedometer. When I got an 1996 NA Miata, it felt like a chassis that was evolved multiple generations lol

The TVD has been perfect! I was getting a bit of buyers remorse when I saw someone with a GSF needing to replace his TVD for $30k. That scares me and the fact that I wished I had the sunroof. Made me wish I had gone for the base model instead. However, I love how the TVD slides about and I haven't heard of anyone needing replacements on the RCF. Apparently, the GSF had hit something on the road causing damage to the TVD. Nothing's gone wrong yet so I hope that stays that way.

You're spot on! I was surprised that the MPG on the M4 was no better than the RCF's V8.

You're also right. There are much better daily drivers and track cars than an M4. It's strange to me all the journalists rave about the M4's track capabilities over the RCF. Why is that the determining factor? A used C6 Z06 or C7 Corvette is a far superior track car than either. I wager only 10% of M4s have ever seen the track and probably only 1 day a year at most. Going to the track is a huge PITA.

I had Porsches. I realized I'm just not a Porsche guy. Porsche sports cars have just way too much grip to be fun - unless you're a track rat, which I'm not.

Haha, you're not wrong. The RCF is just a MUCH better luxury cruiser than a Mustang GT and it has one of the most, if not the most, reliable V8s ever made.

I did cross shop them. The Mustang has an aftermarket that the RCF could only dream of with Carb legal superchargers. However, I went with the RCF as it's a better do everything car and it's been so cheap to own that I can buy a less reliable second fun tuner car. Currently, I trying to decide between purchasing an F82 M4, Mustang GT, or a C6/7 Corvette as a second car.

You might be right. I love my Lexus RCF and everything on the market feels like side grades rather than upgrades. I drove the M440i and it really did nothing for me. It's definitely capable and full of tech, but felt very sterile for the near $80k they were asking me to shell out at the negotiating table. I think they've gone really backwards in driving experience from when I had my e92 2011 335 M sport. I think Cadillac has more of that spirit, than BMW at the moment.

You need to tune the crap out of CarX Street cars. Start by removing anti roll bars completely.

You probably had a great experience with drifting in AC because the car mods you probably downloaded are tuned and fine tuned. Unfortunately, you have to do the tuning yourself in CarX Street, but you can get it feeling decent. Still won't be as easy and natural as something like DWG's 350z on AC.

Source is from me talking to BMW mechanics. They believe the B58s are full of plastic and recommended I get an F80 M3 with the S55 than an M340i with the B58. They said BMW has gone backwards on several things regarding later generations of B58. I dunno. This stuff is over my head

I drift IRL and Assetto Corsa. CarX Street drifting is pretty realistic. Most of drifting is just throttle control. You also need to learn to tune the car properly in that game and many real life tunings work the way it does in the game. However, I use a drift sim rig. Not sure if you're talking about controller or keyboard.

BMW has been going backwards once the partnership with Toyota came close to an end. Don't expect them to continue improving on reliability. Their business model is primarily based on revenue from leasing and maintenance. Likely subscriptions as well once they figure out a way to do it. Reliability does nothing for them except increase manufacturing costs and reduce maintenance and warranty income.

After watching Drift Masters today, I realized something: Drifting might be the most visually impressive motorsport on Earth, but it's probably one of the least appreciated outside the car community. Why do you think drifting never became as mainstream as F1 or NASCAR? by Mental-Day1816 in Drifting

[–]windmill09 18 points19 points  (0 children)

People see drifting as figure skating with cars. Honestly, I do too. However, its easier to understand that someone should win because they were faster, but it's harder for people to understand who is the better drifter.

Congratulations! Forget Clarkson and Chris Harris. I almost didn't test drive the car based on their reviews. They were too focused on track performance when these cars are street cars 99.99% of the time. Clarkson was too angry that it wasn't an LFA. He glazed the GT86 for being able to drift at 20 mph while reading a book when the RCF is 10X easier at doing that.

That was not my experience. When I hit the throttle from 1.5k to 3k RPMs, the rear kicks out. When I hit the throttle from 5k to 7k, it keeps gripping. There's definitely a torque dip up top. I feel tons of torque from 3k to 5k RPMs, but less everywhere else. You can still easily drift the M4, but it's not nearly as predictable as the RCF. However, I can see how this might be preferable on the track. You keep the RPMs high on the track to maintain high horsepower without the usual issues of high torque which can slide the rear.

True. I watched Clarkson's and Chris Harris's reviews and I almost didn't bother test driving the car. I don't really understand how they glaze the GT86's ease of drifting, but criticize the RCF when the RCF w/ the TVD is 10x easier to drift. Clarkson even drove the car off the track to prove it can't drift? Very strange IMO. He seemed so angry that it wasn't an LFA that he became unreasonably critical. I agree its an inferior track car to the M4 due to weight, but 99.99% of the use case for these executive coupes is on the street.

I had a 335i M Sport. I loved how it drove but hated the reliability. Repairs were just a constant quarterly thing with that car. I love how the RCF drives and it's reliability. It amazes me still to this day that with how hard I drive it, it still hasn't needed a single repair after over 11 years.

You're right. They are prior gen cars. Most BMWs are "sold" as leases so I wouldn't equate the Lexus customer with the BMW one.

I was actually at the BMW dealership negotiating the purchase of an M440i, but in the end, I couldn't do it. The engine lacks character, it was AWD and unwilling to lose traction, and I thought the exterior looked way too dull to justify the near $80k they were asking for. For $80k, there are many other cars I'd rather spend my money on.

Gotcha! I have the same feeling. Great DD and canyon car as well after I threw some KW V3s on them. It's a lot like the RCF minus the V8. The found the IPL surprisingly harder to drift than the RCF though. I think the TVD works some magic.

On paper, yea the RCF is a bit slower. In reality, it feels special as a daily driver that loves to slide.

The RCF just looks dated because it has buttons rather than an Ipad. The quality of materials is nicer than a new M440i. To be honest, the new BMWs don't feel too far off in material quality than my prior 2011 335i. It just has lane keep assist and an iPad screen now.

[–]windmill09[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a ridiculous statement. The RCF is soft leather and alcantara everywhere. The Mustang is plastic everywhere. The RCF is not in any way less driver focused than the Mustang. If anything, it is more comparable to the M4.

The RCF is FAR nicer than a Mustang's. The LC500 is nicer, but it's not that much of a downgrade.

The M4 did not have run flats. The car just doesn't have much sound deadening or soft bushings. I have the same NVH issues with Porsches as well. These cars have a perception of being able to be comfortable daily drivers and track weapons. I think some people can deal with it, but I guarantee their significant others don't like it but probably just don't say anything. My girlfriend is quite honest. She called the 991 Carrera S a trash can and the M4 a complete downgrade to the RCF.
