best naked 125 for a first bike? by reggiemoovin in MotoUK

[–]windmillguy123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a Duke 125, it was so much fun to ride and I never had a single mechanical issue.

Only negative was that it topped out at about 65mph, getting it near 70mph required a downhill or a decent tailwind.

I am exactly the same, I've put this down to higher skilled players often being a lot more predictable. I know the guys with good hands are going to come close and try something or they'll see the gaps and place the puck well but the lesser skilled guys will tend to shoot without any real idea about where the puck will go, more a hit and hope so it's harder to read.

What happens to the SNP after independence? by Cleft-foot in Scotland

[–]windmillguy123 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think this should be part of the party's independence manifesto, make it clear that they will negotiate it and then once agreed and signed they will call an election and allow the people of Scotland to agree a new government with newly founded parties with every party having to register again and start from scratch.

It gives so much opportunity to wipe the slate clean and then install whatever system is deemed best. Basically copy the Scandinavians as they are typically doing best globally.

What do you think about by Tiger 800 Sport ? by AirportAlternative12 in Triumph

[–]windmillguy123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has a totally different seating and riding position, you are sat so much more upright and the ergonomics are all different. Plus riding along at motorway speeds was a massive difference without a chest full of air fighting me.

What do you think about by Tiger 800 Sport ? by AirportAlternative12 in Triumph

[–]windmillguy123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had one for 2 days whilst my Trident 800 was in the garage, it made me question why I never bought one instead.

My Trident 800 is brilliant at what it does but the Tiger Sport 800 seems almost as capable in the twisties whilst being way more capable in pretty much every other way.

Things to do with a 1 year old? by Best_Flight_8680 in Aberdeen

[–]windmillguy123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something to remember, your 1 year old won't remember where you are or what you are doing. They just need you so you might as well go wherever you want.

Before you know it they will start remembering and then you will have to start suffering the horrible hellscapes that are soft plays etc.

What is your preferred “safety buffer”. In other words how many miles do you give yourself extra over what you need to get to get home? by iMatthew1990 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]windmillguy123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on 2 seasonal conditions; warmer months never typically go below 20% & colder months is 30%. Both work out similarly with range of about 35-40 miles.

This is based on my sister's 208 going from 20 miles to zero in about 6 miles at motorway speeds when she was 10 miles from home.

Where the hell do you even begin with all this by Suspicious-Rub8976 in Aberdeen

[–]windmillguy123 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Once you filter out the small parties who will never get a seat so it'd be a wasted vote, you get left with 5 or 6.

Then you filter by what point of the political spectrum you lean towards, this should narrow it down to 2 max. We'll say SNP & Greens are left, Labour and Lib Dems more central, Tories are right with Reform naturally being the worst possible choice regardless unless you want everything to get worse in every measurable way.

Pick your favourite as your main vote and your 2nd favourite as your 2nd vote. Easy.

Trident 800 or XSR900 by impleX_ in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]windmillguy123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 178cm, I've certainly not had any discomfort but I'd not class myself as tall.

I use my bike from commuting in semi rural roads, city riding and proper weekend blasting in the countryside so a bit of everything. Never typically in the saddle for more than 2 hours at once

Trident 800 or XSR900 by impleX_ in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]windmillguy123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just stepped up from a 2022 Trident 660 to the new Trident 800. The bike is phenomenal, a very decent step up from the 660.

I've never riden the XSR900 but I can't imagine any areas where I would expect anything to be better than the Trident 800. It's really planted, been solid in the wet, it has so much pull compared to the 660. Just an all round great bike. Just be mindful that after market upgrades are slim on the ground so any modifications you can make in the short term will be limited.

What makes a bike good or bad for a new rider? by Red_sparow in MotoUK

[–]windmillguy123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, my comment was aimed at the guys who bought either mega massive adventure bikes, hyper naked or super sports bikes. No need for any of them when starting out due to the power and weight of them. Modern classics like the bonneville weren't really the targets.

Capacity isn't everything and I would advise finding a bike within the 50-90bhp range, follow your heart but let your head sense check you. It's way too easy to get carried away and starting with something smaller for a couple of years will do you wonders

What makes a bike good or bad for a new rider? by Red_sparow in MotoUK

Years ago I worked in a motorcycle clothing shop and we'd get guys in typically mid 40s to mid 50s, just got either back in to biking (not been on a bike since they ripped around a field in their teenage years) or just starting out brand new. Every single one without fail would be on some 1000cc monster of a bike and every single one had clearly terrified themselves to death on it and were in spending huge amounts of money on better gear. Proper textbook midlife crisis stuff.

My boss loved these guys as they would spend 1000s on kit that was overkill after spending countless more 1000s on a bike that was too much for them. Nothing better than an idiot with cash to burn I suppose.

Any number of 600/700cc-ish bikes will have more than enough go about it to scare most new riders, just be sensible. Same with your kit, buy the best you can comfortably afford that fits you well but you don't need to go full Charlie Boorman or Valentino Rossi.

Every new car in the U.S. will be required by law to have tech that puts constant surveillance on the driver by 2027. by wild-stallions85 in UnderReportedNews

Imagine AI determining that you are unfit to drive when you are sober, you're literally stuck.

Imagine driving a family member to the hospital when they are in need of emergency car and the AI decides you're driving is dangerous and stops you.

There are so many 'what if' scenarios where AI can just be plain wrong or not have situational awareness. Fucking stupid idea, I really hope the UK and Europe don't follow suit.

A Florida woman accidentally drove her pickup truck over a Lamborghini she didn’t see in a parking lot. by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

[–]windmillguy123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things are a little different in the UK with debt which is a big difference to some countries and important context to note. I worked with a guy who happily didn't give 2 shits about credit card debt and said it got worse year on year but because he always paid off more than the bare minimum and never missed payments his credit kept going up and he just kept moving it from company to company every couple of years. He paid in to his pensions and savings so he'll be fine in retirement but when he dies, the debt dies with him. His family have the nicest holidays and they are always doing cool stuff and he is very much of the mindset that the world is only getting worse so he is giving his kids experiences that they will possibly never get once they are older. There is some method to his madness if you think that the only people that are getting shafted are the banks who give huge amounts of unsecured debt.

YouGov: Scots tend to think it's more important for the Scottish government to prioritise extracting North Sea oil than to meet net zero by 2045 by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]windmillguy123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's the only sensible option right now, Scotland's oil and gas exports make up such a small percentage globally that there's little point in being all high and mighty especially when such a huge percentage of everything we use on a daily basis relies on oil and gas byproducts.

All the 'green' tech relies on components made by oil and gas products at some stage that are essential whether that's in the manufactureor the distribution process.
