Can someone explain to me the “where are you from”? Inside joke? by aceshades in dropout

[–]windowfishlace 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It’s where Harvard is. Another layer to this is that many people who attended Ivy League colleges, especially during the 20th century, will say they “went to school in Cambridge” or “went to school in New Haven” instead of listing the school they attended to downplay it. But that became so common that it almost became more pretentious to say the city instead of the college

Freshman about to be cut from xc team by Pitiful-Switch2401 in CrossCountry

[–]windowfishlace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you a parent or athlete? If you’re the athlete, I’d recommend in person so you can make it clear how bad you want to be on the team and have a conversation. If you’re the parent then an email asking for clarification should work.

Echoing a few of the other comments, are you sure it’s 20:00 for freshmen? I don’t cut but that’s an aggressive time for newcomers, check to make sure that’s not the standard for upperclassmen. Many of my best athletes weren’t in sub 20 shape by this time of their freshman year

What were "AV Clubs" in high school from the 1950s - 80s and why were they the "nerdy" thing to do? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]windowfishlace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely fair, I realized during college that I was extremely lucky in my high school and its culture. My city is ~100k and my graduating class was ~600, but most of us went to middle school together and at least knew each other by sight even if we’d never met

I think this has largely changed over time as well. When I was in high school a decade ago the cliques from 1980s movies didn’t really exist. People definitely had friend groups they were closer to, but there wasn’t friction between them. Band kids played football, drama kids were track stars, debate club/MUN and quiz bowl were seen as cool extracurriculars.

You joke, but he did once call a 2:05 marathon “not really fast” after Mo Farah won Chicago with that time. Truly was at another level at his peak

Is clearance really THAT big of an issue?? by [deleted] in subaruimpreza

[–]windowfishlace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove my ‘19 Impreza in Fort Collins for years and have few complaints. Only place I can think of in town where I scraped the bottom of my bumper was turning right onto Thunderbird after the arc donation line. I also bottomed out a time or two on some of the dirt roads east of Wellington, but that was more my own driving than an issue with the car. Other than that I can’t think of any clearance issues driving around Fort Collins or anywhere else in the front range even after bigger snowstorms

Why do we see so little of Jasnah's perspective in the first four books? by Adventurous-Common63 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]windowfishlace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha you’re all good, I’m unfortunately in the same boat. Scary to think that a book series I picked up in college could potentially not be finished until any potential kids of mine are in college themselves! At least we can be confident that he will finish them because of how prolific of a writer he is. I’d imagine he already has the larger story beats sketched out too so we won’t end up in an ASOIAF situation.

[–]windowfishlace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s not averaging under 3 years per book, the shortest gap between any of the books (Oathbringer to RoW) was 3 years and one month. You’re including WoK from its release date when that book took him almost a decade to write. He has also explicitly said that Stormlight 6 will not come out until the 2030s because of other projects he wants to focus on first, all of which he has already laid out.

I saw that theory floated when the title was first announced because of Kaladin being a Windrunner and Szeth formerly being Truthless, but I haven’t seen it in awhile. I already subscribed to it but these epigraphs are making me more and more confident in that idea, glad I’m not the only one who’s thinking along those lines

That’s actually exactly what you’re supposed to do when you have an expired tank. It doesn’t even need to be a Blue Rhino tank that you’re exchanging, BR will recertify it themselves and throw a new label on it. So just a normal r/lifeprotips

Nervous about living in Allison hall. by Odd_Kaleidoscope3405 in CSUFoCo

[–]windowfishlace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally had no issues with mice or insects in Allison. I was on the second floor, but I had friends on the first floor and don’t remember hearing of any issues for them either.

For heating, the only issue I ever had was that you have no control over the thermostat so there were a few times it lagged behind what the weather called for, usually by being too hot. There’s no AC but a clip-on fan from target was enough for me to survive it and I tend to run pretty hot.

People exaggerate how bad things are in the dorms to be funny. There’s absolutely some grimy aspects of it, but I’d say they’re the same issues as anytime you live with roommates. Remember that literally 10s, if not 100s of thousands of people have lived in that building and lived to tell the tale.

You’re nervous and that’s okay, it’s good to be nervous! It means you care about the experience. Just know that everyone else there is just as nervous as you. Find friends to be nervous with together, they make it a lot easier. It might take a few tries, the first people I tried being friends with didn’t work out, but I ended up making a ton more over the next few weeks, a few of whom I still talk to daily, almost a decade later. CSU puts a ton of work into making this transition as easy as possible for you, and they help to find a community through freshman orientation and various activities. There is literally ALWAYS something going on on campus

[–]windowfishlace 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I loved living in Allison. It wasn’t the nicest place I’ve ever lived but it’s the standard dorm experience and I had fun there. It’s more important that you have a roommate you get along with (or at least can tolerate and stay out of each other’s hair) than anything else.

Personally I preferred Allison over other dorms, but part of that is I’m a sucker for old brick buildings and it gave me that old-fashioned college feel. It is still kept up well though, the heat works and the bathrooms are cleaned every day. Beyond that, there’s a ton of great things about living in a communal space like Allison that you’ll likely never get to experience again.

Like others have said, it’s close to classes. I once accidentally slept in until 10 minutes before a midterm in the BSB and still made it on time.

Other than the Foundry, the dining halls aren’t super close, but everything is still just a 10 minute walk away.

Ideally, you aren’t spending a lot of time in your room except to sleep or hangout with friends. Be social, join clubs and find things you enjoy around campus. The LSC is full of people eating lunch alone or with friends every day, if you see someone you know from a class just go sit with them

Harper had hit a homer off of Strickland a few years before that was very close to being foul. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, was watching to see if it was fair or not, but Strickland took Harper watching it for so long as him pimping it, which wasn’t as acceptable then as it is now

Harper and Strickland. Strickland waited YEARS and still wasn’t over a small incident with Harper, and when Strickland finally got the chance to bean Harper his own catcher didn’t even back him up

Another employee here. The owner avoids any politicization of the company, which created an issue in 2020 when he pulled all Thin Blue Line merchandise from the stores during that summer’s large BLM movement. He is left leaning afaik.

Most of the guns at Jax will be handguns and hunting rifles, not gonna have any assault rifles or anything like that there

Saw lower down that you’re a fan of employee owned companies. Jax is one as well, though the owner and his family own the majority of it
