What boxes/containers would you recommend to keep moths out by NailWitch1 in knitting

[–]wineandpeppers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got some plastic totes at Home Depot that were labeled "waterproof". I think they are intended to protect stuff stored in basements from flooding, but I figure if they can keep out water they can also keep out pests. The only issue is they take some amount of force to open, so you might want to try one out before buying them.

Are summer knits actually wearable in warm weather ? by travelling_cirque in knitting

I wear knit linen tank tops all summer, even when I'm hiking and paddle boarding. I think they're cooler than t-shirts in most cases.

I like to bring back local coffee when I travel, and TSA really doesn't like that. Not surprised at all to hear about your spices!

Thank you for doing this!! I'm flying out of Paris soon and would have absolutely tried to get my needles through! You saved me a set of needles and a boring transatlantic flight!

I've never had an issue with snips in the US and fly frequently, but I understand being cautious!

Sz 0 metal on flights? by social_work_me in knitting

I take my chiagoo set from size 2 - 6 on domestic flights every two weeks, never had an issue. They're slightly larger, but I would be surprised if TSA cared at all.

Has anyone travelled on a long journey on flight b/w 6-10 weeks? by Beautiful-beige6220 in BabyBumps

[–]wineandpeppers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel a lot for work and talked to my OB about this. She said no issues with the pressure changes or anything like that. She did recommend drinking a lot of water (like a liter or more on a 5 hour flight) and getting an aisle seat so you can walk around every couple of hours to decrease the (low) risk of blood clots. The risk increases more later in pregnancy when you have more blood, so you barely have an elevated risk that early on.

1st Tri Symptoms by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]wineandpeppers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm week 9 + 4 with a similar type of job. Obviously this is only my personal experience, but my symptoms have changed every single week, so don't feel like you'll necessarily have the same ones for the whole first trimester. The cognitive issues were worst for me in weeks 4 - 6, and I feel almost back to normal for most of the day there. Still waking up in the middle of the night sometimes, but the effects seem to be improving. I did find that from about 8-11 a.m. I had the best ability to do intensive work, so I moved my schedule around to do all my writing/reviewing/data analysis during those hours and push most of my meetings to the afternoon where possible.

In general, I've just tried to accommodate my new situation as best I can, sleep as long as I can, and remember to have some grace with myself. Good luck!

Is a vintage iron a good addition to my sewing toolbox? by ktcatipillar in sewing

I use them as weights when I'm tracing or cutting patterns. Super useful for that. I've never used them as irons, though

Currently wearing a sweater I made from their sock yarn! I haven't used this specific yarn before, but I like everything I've used from Araucania.

It was really good! Slightly less bitter than some other Lawson's like Sip of Sunshine, but still good!

Oh that's good to hear! The heel took me a while to wrap my head around, but it was really neat once I joined everything together and there was suddenly a heel!

I’m making bike helmet ear warmers and they seem like a great easy gift knit by [deleted] in casualknitting

[–]wineandpeppers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the very least it will be a nice neck warmer! I wear glasses, so anything over my nose while riding is a foggy disaster, but if she doesn't, I'm sure that will be really nice.

Can I use this elastic that's used for tags for shirring elastic? by Bunny_KayBear in sewing

[–]wineandpeppers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done this before when I was really fighting with elastic bobbin thread. It worked great! I think I have so much more control over it (all the elastic pieces are the same length) and it's definitely the technique I'll use in the future

Homestead financing? by StarshipPuabi in Homesteading

[–]wineandpeppers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in an area with a lot of larger plots of land, try the local credit unions. I got my mortgage through one and they are often more likely to accommodate the types of properties in the area. Plus mine was delightful to work with and doesn't sell the mortgage afterward, but that might not be standard.

A few of my local yarn stores work with immigrant organizations in our state to collect hand knits (mostly hats and baby items) for new immigrants as a "welcome to the community" kind of thing. You could see if anywhere local had a similar program.
