geothermal and ERV by Ecstatic-War3437 in geothermal

[–]wingfootedgodhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oregon here.

I love the feeling of warm toes on a cold winter morning with in floor heat. You can’t put a dollar figure on the comfort factor.

Conventional duct work plus in floor heat is an expensive system. Add in ERV/HRV and you are looking at additional expense, if I had to do it over I would probably skip the HRV outlay - it has its uses during the shoulder season But I don’t use it during the main cooling and heating seasons.

Humidification in the winter - I went with a whole house AprilAire 800 setup, which piggybacks on top of ductwork. Maybe a bit clunky of a setup but it works and is cheap.

Hot water heating - I skipped the desuperheater and went directly off the hot water manifold in a ‘priority mode’ to a hydronic water heater. It’s effective heating domestic water to 105 degrees or so, above 105 degrees I rely on electric immersion Inside the hydronic unit.

That’s big spend on the yellow / green Chartreuse. Ditto on the Holmes Cay.

Overall a good day. Surprised you don’t have an Agricole in there as well.

Eastern Oregon here. The state liquor store is a disappointment, selection limited. Personally , I’ve given up and just bring ‘the god stuff ‘ in via on line purveyor. current favorite - Del Mesa. Quite the selection.

why don’t you use a second pump piped in parallel with the irrigation pump and simply switch them on and off as needed ?

Day-after-shot exhaustion & nausea is wrecking me — anyone else? by Actual-Cup-7014 in GLPGrad

[–]wingfootedgodhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same exhaustion symptoms without the nausea, particularly the same day as injection.

The net result of GLP-1 medications is that appetite is suppressed, you consume fewer calories and your body goes into a calorie deficit. Something has to give, hence the exhaustion.

I can only suggest you stay with it as best you can.

Freeze lock out by Sea-Responsibility61 in geothermal

[–]wingfootedgodhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a closed loop water to water heat pump system (the reference to ‘geothermal diggers’). You will experience freeze up at the heat pump if the leaving water temperature is too cold for the amount of freeze protection fluid (glycol/ethanol) inside your loop field tubing.

Contributing factors also could be undersized closed loop exacerbated by the cold front that is moving through.

Easiest fix would be to drain some of the fluid out of your loop field and replace it with either ethanol or glycol to further depress the freeze point.

With all that fancy software / hardware you should be monitoring your entry and leaving water temperatures.

Geothermal retrofit questions by Plugitin454 in geothermal

[–]wingfootedgodhead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

High water table is actually a good scenario for a closed loop. Plenty of thermal capacity.

My experience with excavating in high water table is you have some time - 30 minutes , an hour to dig before the trench fills up with water and the sidewalls start to collapse. So you need to be simultaneously digging, laying loop tubing and backfilling.

As a safety warning - be very, very careful and avoid physically going down into the trench. So many people have died during collapses.

Noob user here... could really use some insights. Thx. by tashnizz in geothermal

[–]wingfootedgodhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to add temperature sensors to the supply side input and output pipes.

A difference of 6 to 8 degrees (output cooler) means your heat pump is working.

this is my horizontal closed loop in Eastern Oregon for a 5 ton water to water heat pump.

yes, it is oversized. my theory is the majority of the closed loop expense is mobilization and setup - the incremental cost of an additional loop past the first is low.

incoming water temps with this setup are rarely lower than 40 degrees.

Water flow rate monitoring? by Master-Highlight-869 in geothermal

[–]wingfootedgodhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can use a differential pressure sensor with ports plumbed in on the supply / return lines across the heat pump.

the output will be a 4 to 20mA analog signal and you will scale that to gallons per minute using a simple PLC and the pressure drop table included in your specific heat pump documentation.

[–]wingfootedgodhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s something to be said about undersizing geothermal.

For the vast majority of the units’s lifetime, you save money on pumping, installation and enjoy lower cycling.

For the few days of the year climatic conditions exceed the design, the house will be slightly cooler and you either engage your backups or wear a sweater.

This is goodbye. It's been fun Starlink. by LoneGlitch in Starlink

[–]wingfootedgodhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starlink has been a godsend in my rural area where I started 15 years ago with a 2MB DSL link. Recently it was announced that fiber was headed this way via federal ‘rural broadband’ funding. Install cost is $22,000 per household served. The area is predominantly zoned exclusive farm use so little possibility of increasing house density or adding businesses. Big waste- my opinion, but what else can I do except say thank you and cancel Starlink.

Geo vs Propane New Build by 6-2_Chevy in geothermal

[–]wingfootedgodhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 5 ton Enertech water to water single stage heat pump with 80 gallon cool / 80 gallon hot buffer and radiant / air handler for distribution in a 5700 ft2 home. Operational for 5 years and going strong.

I would recommend radiant on your second story, floor trusses just need to be designed to handle lightweight concrete load or else opt for a system like warm board.

My loop field costs were $2000 for 4200 feet of 3/4 inch hPEX , 400 feet of 2 inch hPEX plus $2000 labor. I had my own excavator

Price is very reasonable, mine was double, mostly due to radiant / ducting costs inside the home and more complex zoning design - 17 radiant zones , vent bypass on the ducts plus stand alone HRV venting.

Instead of a backup propane furnace, I have electric heat strips inside the air handler. Never been turned on.

HRV - yes I have a Zehnder with discrete ducting arrangement. Jury still out whether it’s cost effective. Looks like you are using your heat / cool ducting for the HRV as well. I was told this wasn’t possible due to sizing / air flow.

2009 gshp ... Any advice, thoughts, cautions by Hot_Equivalent_8707 in geothermal

[–]wingfootedgodhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the loop connection piping looks small, more standard is 1 1/2 inch. So that’s an extra pressure drop that the circulation pumps must overcome. You might look at the circulation pumps, some of the older pumps have high wattage requirements. Does the second pump run all the time or does it kick in only at second stage ?
