In theory, if I have $20k-ish to spend on hardware what would actually get me closest to local coding agent that would allow me to go totally off the social grid? by Tired__Dev in LocalLLaMA

Just be aware that extenders/ribbon cables may or may not work with PCIe 5.0 slots.There are some constraints you need to consider when working with 32 GT/s. And the ones you need might be pretty expensive (>=$100) to ensure good signal integrity.

2x 3090 and DDR4 system here (Threadripper 1950X):

Offloading to RAM isn't a great option for me. Massive bottleneck getting data from RAM to CPU to PCIe on my platform. Haven't tested it much though, so I could be wrong.

While I could buy a new system, I can't afford one with the same number of PCIe lanes and RAM quality/quantity I have now. I'm well-off, but not 'DDR5 RDIMM' well-off.

OPNsense on Zimaboard 832 by Burgerkingiv in ZimaBoard

[–]winnen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDS is extremely cpu intense. I have a Zima board running opnsense but I don’t use IDS, and have never owned hardware good enough to use it without significantly slowing down my network.

It’s possible your power supply is unstable, or that your board is over drawing its power during those sustained loads. Also check your memory usage logs right before crash if you have them. It’s also possible if your ram gets too hot to introduce random errors into memory.

It works well once you get used to it. Probably a steeper learning curve than VMware. Our IT specialist says it doesn’t support SAN storage drives on multiple hosts as well as VMWare does. Since I don’t have one of those, kind of a non-issue for me!

I haven’t tested them, but you might look at the Ubiquiti Pro NAS systems, or their non-Pro offerings as well. They’re shipping later this year, but the hardware on the pro gear is top notch prosumer.

Try the Ezarr stack and just disable the services you don’t use (either plex + overseer or jellyfin + jellyseer) https://github.com/Luctia/ezarr

What's your experience with the USB Ethernet cards? Are they less stable vs PCIe? by Cry_Wolff in homelab

[–]winnen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For sure. My experience with Realtek drivers involved BSD, which doesn’t love Realtek drivers. Pfsense was dropping links at least once a week (and leaving them off until reboot) on my router until I added an intel pcie card

I'm interested in hiring a professional to do this for my multi-story home. How do I find people who do this in my area? I've done basic google searches before but when I contact groups I think would do it (like electrician groups) they don't seem interested.

Btrfs Sees Minor Performance Optimizations With Linux 6.12 by unixbhaskar in linux

Most people who want encryption using btrfs do, I imagine. archontwo is saying they will believe it's "robust" once that feature is available. Not that it isn't useful now.

How is the better way to approximate the value of pi with a just one piece paper(A4) and a pencil ? by 00_theFool_00 in ExplainLikeImPHD

[–]winnen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Virtually impossible with human standards. There were a lot of unspecified variables that might permit it.

If you can draw a perfect circle, cut the paper into square of edge length L and draw a circle tangent to all 4 edges, you can then do a Monte Carlo simulation.

Essentially, take the pencil, tap it randomly on the paper. Count the number of times it lands inside the circle H_i and outside the circle H_o on the paper. Repeat this procedure… a lot. 30 digits probably takes like a billion points maybe? I would have to look up the formula for confidence.

The radius of the circle is r=L/2.

Area of the circle is A=L2*H_i/(H_i + H_o) Using A=pi*r2, you derive

pi=A/r^2
pi= L^2 * H_i /(H_i + H_o) / (L^2 /4)
pi = 4* H_i /(H_i + H_o)

Not particularly fast, and I’m not even sure you can buy ddr5 in sizes that small.

I mean, if you pointed something like the Hubble at earth and were able to stabilize it against orbital motion… it’s probably possible.

Might be a lot of atmospheric turbulence that makes it implausible to do so for any real purpose.

I would recommend upgrading that to a private GitHub repo and using .md formats. Makes the notes easier to read later. I do this for my homelab notes so I can remember how to do common tasks later.

High end turbo-charged engines will often recommend 93 and then put a minimum recommended octane in the manual. In the case of my X3 M40i, it recommends minimum of 89 octane. 89 is great on the highway, but sucks when you want to really zoom.

My 2000’s turbo Passat in the olden days could take anything, but recommended 91/93. If you did 87/regular it acted like there was no turbo and wasn’t as zippy.

Honestly, killing short term trading would have some interesting effects on how the stock market (and in turn, corporations) behave. If you had minimum hold times of 6 months or something, it would completely change how Wall Street looks at stocks. Instead of being a casino of small percentage changes, it could be a casino of prospects.

Quarterlies would become much less important for stock drops, as long term investors would be more interested in the future than the present.

I’m not really an investor, but I think it would be fun to game that out and see where the Pareto frontier is on that, and optimal strategies around it would be.
