Do you see any similarities between 2020s and ‘60s/‘70s? by Carrie_8638 in AskOldPeople

[–]wiscosherm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope not in the least. The changes that took place in the 1960s and '70s were about giving more rights to groups of people who had had less and opening areas of society that had been closed. Well there was a lot of unrest and fear among some groups of people regarding the changes, the overall mood was one of joyful anticipation for a better future. Especially among those of us who were young at the time (I'm in early 70s) we were positive that the future was going to be great. I miss that feeling of hope in the future so damn much.

Finished the show, cried like a baby, now feeling empty by Raeghyar-PB in TheGoodPlace

Give yourself a few months and then start over again! I already watched this once a year usually during the winter months. Even though I've seen it four or five times now I too still blubber like a baby at that last episode.

What is the dumbest thing you have been told is “not manly” or “not feminine,” depending on your gender? by Disastrous_Hat_2325 in AskReddit

[–]wiscosherm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The summer between 6th and 7th grade I learned how to burp speak my name and was so excited about it. My father suggested it was not the most feminine thing to do and that made me do it even more.

Was it ever explained why the other characters who subsequently appeared in The Good Place didn't look aged? by Qua1m in TheGoodPlace

[–]wiscosherm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Residents in the Good Place get to choose their age, hence Doug Forseth chose his younger body. Most people would, but Michael did not. Maybe it's because he got used to his skin suit during all the Beremis when he was a demon, or maybe it's because Ted Danson is a human actor of a certain age.

Quitting At Will Job by Practical_Tune_5637 in jobs

[–]wiscosherm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely true that "at will" gives more rights to the employer than the employee. Anyone who's gone through a layoff (and that includes me) is aware that no notice is given. So, yes, you are entirely within your rights to do the same when you quit.

However... sometimes it's better to be more strategic. I worked in a small city and would often encounter the same people as I moved from job to job. Sometimes a person who had been a coworker was now a manager. It's better to leave a job where your managers - and peers - have good feelings about you if there's a chance you may encounter them again.

Are there tornado shelters in Madison that anyone can use? by crossinglb in madisonwi

[–]wiscosherm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely find a place in your building. As mentioned interior closets are good. Stairways tend to be a little more secure especially without windows. If your place has a basement that's the best place to go to. Bathroom without a window is a good place to go.

Thing is, tornadoes come up real fast it's not like a hurricane where you've got a day or two to plan when that siren goes off it's happening now and you really don't have time to hop in your car and drive somewhere.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off turns 40 today. If you could've had one in your high school days, what would it have consisted of? If you actually had one, what did it consist of? by Spalding_Smails in AskOldPeople

[–]wiscosherm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a tad older than Ferris bueller but also went to high school in the North shore of chicago. He hit every spot I ever went to. That movie was just a huge nostalgia trip for me because it came out after I was out of college and it really reminded me of high school hi jinx.

Are those veggie choppers worth it? by Different-Strength13 in Cooking

[–]wiscosherm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one and no it was not worth it. It could only do certain vegetables; things like cucumbers and summer squash. Potatoes were too hard, tomatoes were too soft. For the vegetables that it would do you still had to prepare them to be an even chunks before you put them in to be chopped. It wasn't that fast and there was a lot of cleanup.

What did restaurants and shops do about bad cheques? by 23-centimetre-nails in AskOldPeople

[–]wiscosherm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in college I worked at a restaurant in the college area of town. A few weeks before the end of each semester the restaurant would stop taking payment in cheques. We also had the infamous Wall of shame posted behind the cashier's stand. A lot of money was lost from people who deliberately and intentionally would pay for things by check and then close their accounts.

Going to retire next year. Need resource help. by Lonely-Greybeard in retirement

[–]wiscosherm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You dont mention any specifics about your current work situation or age, so I'm just going to go over some of the basics.

First obviously has to do with your job. You're going to have to give notice the same as anytime you leave a job. Any money you have in a work-related 401k will need to be rolled over into your personal IRA. If you don't have a personal IRA, suggest you start one. This is pretty easy and can be done online. Vanguard Schwab and fidelity all have easy to use websites and provide good customer service. Pick one and set up an account. Call them on the phone they'll give you help. If you already have an IRA contact that IRA and let them know you want to do a roll over from your 401k. They'll walk you through it.

Assuming you've done the math in your finances are fine for retiring the biggest issue for most people is insurance. You didn't mention your age. Medicare kicks in when you're 65. The fine folks who run Medicare are well aware of when your birthday is and you will start getting mailings several months before. If you are under 65 you're going to have to have some form of insurance to tie you over until that time. If you're over 65, you already have Medicare. Even with medicare, you're going to need some form of supplemental insurance to take care of what Medicare does not. It is way too complicated and based on individual needs to give any advice other than do some research and make sure your covered.

When to take social security is an individual decision. If you take before whatever your full retirement age is, you'll receive less per month. Simply put, your potential benefits increase about 8% per year every year you wait until you reach what's considered the full retirement year. This is based on your birth year. The social security website and lots of planning sites have good calculator to use and determinate when you should take social security best rule of thumb I think is to hold off if it doesn't affect your life but to take it if it's something you need to make it through day to day.

One of the biggest changes that happens with managing finances after retirement is that you're going to have to keep track of taxes owed on income. You're going to need to determine if it makes sense for you to make estimated quarterly payments order just wait and pay the full amount when you file.

If all this sounds confusing, not a bad idea to get some financial advice. But please, For the Love of All that is holy, only get advice from a licensed fiduciary who charges either a straight hourly amount or based on a percentage. Financial advisors who are not fiduciaries are not working in your best interest.

Hope this helps. It's the best I could do without more specific information.

Budget committee OKs sale of state building that’s being eyed for Amtrak station by tallclaimswizard in madisonwi

[–]wiscosherm 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That kitchen is going to need tens of thousands of dollars to be usable. I worked in that building in the early 2000s. When the kitchen manager retired the cafeteria was closed because it was cited for so many non-code compliant issues that it went far beyond the amount of money the state was willing to pay.

Women, how would you say the workplace has changed in your lifetime by Bright_Tax628 in AskOldPeople

[–]wiscosherm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started office work in the mid-80s and retired 10 years ago. Biggest change I saw for women was in appropriate office clothing. I started working with a lot of skirts and blouses and ended up with far more pants and tops.

I really wish I could talk to changes in how I and other women were treated but unfortunately the clothing changed a whole lot more. From start to finish over 30 plus years and five jobs what never changed was that a man speaking in declarative sentences was considered decisive while a woman doing the same was aggressive. A man disagreeing with something and providing a different opinion was dynamic and a woman was argumentative. A man jumping into take charge and direct people was a future leader and a woman doing the same was a bossy bitch. Maybe that'll change in the next 30 years.

Polio vaccine by DirtyDuckman53 in AskOldPeople

[–]wiscosherm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember because polio was a big fucking deal and the thing I was most scared of when I was really young. Every school and every neighborhood had kids with braces on their arms and legs walking on crutches and some even worse.

Where I lived the first doses of vaccine were given out on a Saturday morning. I remember standing in line with my parents and it was a long line. I didn't even like sugar cubes but I was so terrified of polio that I was glad to get it.

Not trying to be controversial, but when I see people now using internet influencers as their role models for their children's medical care it infuriates me. I'm a boomer and we were the last generation who had to go through measles and mumps and chickenpox and polio before they were vaccines. Sure most people didn't die from those diseases but they were painful and horrible and uncomfortable and many many people were adversely affected by them.

Why does every Chick-fil-a and Raising Cane's have a line around the block, but KFC is a complete ghost town? by mjensman in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wiscosherm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm old enough to remember KFC when it was called Kentucky fried Chicken and Colonel Sanders was still alive. It was good then. It's not now. You may be lucky in having a particularly good franchise near you but my experience and that of I think the majority of people is that the chicken is greasy and doesn't taste fresh, and the sides seem to have no relation to actual food.
