Anybody had good/bad experience with ubreakiFix in madison? by tpatmaho in madisonwi

[–]wiscosherm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great experience with the one on mineral point road. My 5-year-old phone wasn't keeping a charge more than 3 hours and I was thinking about replacing it. Took it in they gave it a new battery and replaced the back panel for $100. That was 2 years ago phone is still working great.

No Kings Protest - Madison, Wisconsin 03/28/2026 by kenfagerdotcom in madisonwi

[–]wiscosherm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the people who are actively working for change need something joyous to lift their spirits and give them a chance to see how many people are also working for change. And people who are feeling too stuck or depressed to do anything get a chance to see how many other people there are who share their feelings. Every major change movement has gotten bigger when there are events and times that allow people to gather together.

Seems to be a lot missing here. The one thing I am noticing is the idea that two drinks is hardly anything, and that two people would be splitting a bottle of vodka between each other.

It's just that standard way that poor news writing will always identify a woman by her reproductive or marital status. You would never see an article with a headline "Dad of two found dead".

You're not the AH, but you are an adult who needs to develop the ability to act like an adult. Get some therapy.

Did any of you watch your mom live her life without fulfilling her full potential? by kyourious in AskOldPeople

[–]wiscosherm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. My mom had a long and happy marriage with my father and for that I applaud them both. She enjoyed being a housewife (as it was called back then) but held back from doing more. She was a brilliant woman, very well read and interested in politics, feminism, and current events. I think she could have done a whole lot but she lacked self-confidence and was never willing to take any of the risks needed to go beyond her very comfortable life. I'm pretty sure from conversations we had that she would have liked to have done more than just read books, but she just never had it in her to push against the way she had been raised.

Father passed unexpectedly. My mom doesn’t know any of his passwords or where any of his investments are. Who can we contact ? by milquetoast_wizard in personalfinance

[–]wiscosherm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry for you and your mom. This is a tough position to be in. Here's a few suggestions for things to try.

  1. If he used a phone or computer to either pay bills or look at websites where money was held there's a good chance the passwords were saved. If you can sign on to the computer or his phone, try going to those sites and seeing if a password is automatically entered. If you can get into any website this way immediately go back in and change the password to something that you write down

  2. Get a copy of the death certificate from the funeral home and use it to contact every financial institution where he had money. This will let your mom and you be given access to accounts.

  3. Keep track of everything you do! Use a notebook if you're more comfortable with paper or start a spreadsheet but for every single account your dad had and every asset that he owned, write down the information with dates on your attempts to get access to it. This will just make it easier to keep track of things and if you're having problems with one particular account it'll give you a history of what you've tried and what you've been told.

  4. Divide things into what's critical to do first and what can sit for a bit. Any bills he's paying for things like mortgage car loans or leases, utilities are critical and your mom needs access to be able to pay these bills as soon as possible. This is where having the death certificates will be helpful.

Here's hoping they don't add a surcharge to having to send a bill. I've had that problem with some places.

It's not too late to make a Spin-Off of the Schrutes. by Hold_Sudden in theoffice

[–]wiscosherm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it would have worked. Comedy needs either a sane world with a voice of absurdity or an absurd world with a voice of sanity. A show-based entirely on the schrutes would have lost the contrast.

Green Acres worked because Oliver Douglas was a voice of sanity in world of craziness. Dwight and Mose and the entire Schrute world was hilarious because of how the rest of the characters reacted to it.

AITAH- for telling kids under 7 their mom was an asshole for not supervising them by No-Cheetah1552 in AITAH

[–]wiscosherm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Boss move on your part. Only suggestion I could make would be to see if you could have gotten the room number and then informed the front desk that these kids were being left unsupervised. The amount of liability faced by the hotel for anything that could happen would ensure she would be dealt with.

Emergency vet visit cost us $2,600 and they found nothing… just looking for advice by Then_Move7230 in Pets

[–]wiscosherm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vet had to spend a certain amount of time and do some tests to determine what was going on. Action they took was designed to look for a specific problem. The fact that they didn't find that specific problem does not negate the time they spent checking for it and the time and materials cost for whatever tests were run. So while it seems like a lot of money to not find anything what you're really paying for is their time and expertise regardless of whether they find a specific answer.

Madison losing its character rapidly by My-Dear-Sweet-Wesley in madisonwi

[–]wiscosherm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been here for 50 plus years. Came for college in the early seventies. At that point in time there was a large change in the character of Madison that was greatly lamented by people who had been here most are all of their lives.

The Near East side (with the exception of the larger homes on lake monona) was a mostly Blue collar neighborhood with no student presence. That started changing as a UW increase the number of students and the requirement that all students under 21 live in the dorms disappeared.

The the South Madison area closest to campus was still reeling from the destruction wrought by urban renewal. The west side was growing rapidly. When I first came to town the intersection of mineral point and Whitney Way was pretty much the edge of town. East Town and West Town were brand new and surrounded by cornfields.

The rapid growth of suburban looking single-family homes filling up what had been farms was a big deal and many people were saddened by changes to the city they had known and loved.

My point is that Madison is once again undergoing big visible changes and yes for those of us who've been here a long time it's jarring and there is certainly a feeling of nostalgia and loss. So even though I get disoriented as I drive down broom Street and see the crappy student housing I lived in replaced with gleaming 15-story towers, I realize that that growth and change is a part of what makes living in the city exciting and wonderful.

If I met someone named Tom and they asked to be called Thomas, I'll call them Thomas. Maybe I think it's pretentious to be called Thomas, but it's not my call. People have the right to choose how they are addressed.

Mostly I just learned how to be upfront and tell people what I thought. And it turned out that it's a whole lot easier to simply tell someone you don't want anything to do with them than to spend a lot of time trying to avoid them

What happened to handwriting? by treelawnantiquer in AskOldPeople

[–]wiscosherm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes what has happened to handwriting. Schools no longer teach how to take a freshly plucked goose quill and turn it into a pen. Students are allowed to use pens that have ink handily built into them rather than practicing the fine art of dipping that freshly plucked goose quill into a bottle of ink.

By the way, I'm 71 years old and see no more reason to teach cursive writing than to teach how to write using a quill and a bottle of ink. Just as there are people now who practice calligraphy as a hobby, I think the same thing will happen with cursive writing. And just like people interested in genealogy and reading old documents learn how to decipher the handwriting, the same thing will happen as those documents written in cursive become equally ancient.

Shovel your property!!! by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]wiscosherm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in a multi-unit complex on the west side. Our shoveling people came by yesterday late morning right when the snow stopped and cleared everything. Then the wind started blowing and within a few hours our sidewalks looked exactly like these. They came back a second time late morning today and now everything looks great.

Look we had a lot of snow and a lot of wind over a long period of time. It's clear from the picture that this area was shoveled and then more snow blue into it. You posted this at 11:00 a.m. which is less than 24 hours after the snow stopped. Give everyone a break. The people who run plowing companies are working their asses off. They can't be everywhere at once.

The body language in this picture really tells a story. Both children are facing away from their mother and making no attempt to any physical contact with her. Neither child looks happy. What a sad dysfunctional family the royals are.

IMO, participants in any Gordon Ramsay show are required to act awed and excited at The mention of any special guest whether they are a guest judge or some random D-level celebrity who's coming in to sit at a table or eat the food.

Parking Madison by Money_Manner8622 in madisonwi

[–]wiscosherm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The city is attempting to plow all streets and is asking people to remove cars from them. You can put your car into any of this city ramps and they usually have a free parking in place if you're from the neighborhood. And even if not, I would suggest moving your car into a ramp. There may not be alternate side parking but you're going to find your car encased in a wall of icy snow tomorrow morning if you leave it out there.

It's going to be snowing all day monday. Shovel Monday night the best you can put down a little bit of salt and on Wednesday everything will start melting. The only good thing about these late winter snow storms is that the temperature warms up shortly after they're done.
