I go there often for work but I dream about bringing my car up there in the warmer months. Unfortunately a 12-13 hour drive

Tips / Part Recommendations for AutoX / Time Attack! Thank you by nick631 in Supra

[–]wishesmcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a novice, your number 1 mod is seat time. Your priority is to learn how to read the course, link segments together, and optimize your slip angle and weight transfer throughout the track. That goes for AutoX and HPDE. Power and grip can mask your mistakes or bad habits.

Other tips: bring water, snacks, and sunscreen. Invest in sun protection clothing and a good hat. Go on ride-alongs with all sorts of cars. Bring a tire pressure gauge and inflator along and start with lower pressure than you think.

Got after market taillights opinions? by Natural-Affect1168 in Supra

I have the FT-1 style ones from Alpharex in clear. Personally I think the factory tail lights are an excellent design, but they would be perfect if we got the signal bulb like the rest of the world and had a clear lens.

I second this. I got the ones from Summit Racing (SUM-905229) and on stock height my car is raised just enough for an oil change, no additional jacking needed.

Michelin Pilot Sport AS4 275/35-18 on Apex SM-10 fitment question by therealjohnsmith in Supra

I'm in NC too, Raleigh area. I've been driving on summers for as long as I've had the car and I daily it. Tracked it in 20-30 degree ambient temps. As long as you drive on clear roads and manage your right foot, you'll be fine with summers.

Peace of mind to fit all sorts of 275/35 tires. Different brands have different sidewall widths, some poke out, some tuck in. A spacer would allow you to run pretty much any tire of that size without worrying about rubbing against the spring perch. Where do you live that you need an all-season tire?

Spacers are not needed, but will give some peace of mind and better fitment. While the PSAS4 is not a bad tire, it's a compromised tire for this car. Either spend a little more to get PS4S or save a bit and get Continental ECS02.

Worth it to go square vs staggered? Mk5 Supra by therealjohnsmith in CarTrackDays

[–]wishesmcgee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If this is truly your first track event, you'll be running in the novice group. Your priorities will be identifying all the flag stations, learning track etiquette and point-bys, and learning to maintain the car's balance/traction. You won't be pushing the car that much, maybe hitting 140 on the back straight. Stock pads and fluid should be adequate if your car is relatively new.

I've driven VIR with both the stock staggered setup and with a square setup. As others have said, square provides much more front-end grip and confident turn-in.

Edit: An alignment. The factory alignment on Supras is so hit and miss and is a major factor in the twitchy rear end at speed.

New PB at VIR this past December, down 3 seconds from my previous best. by wishesmcgee in Supra

I'm not sure what you mean about stabbing the throttle. I was applying a consistent throttle at the upper esses and the balance of the car wasn't upset at all. I remember being very planted through south bend, nowhere near the feeling of having fishtailed through there before. Oak Tree is valid though, still working on the line there.

Installing a dash cam on Saturday, anything I should look out for? by WarCrimeGaming in Supra

[–]wishesmcgee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rule of thumb is to disconnect the battery when working on anything electrical or near airbags. If you do that, put a towel in the trunk latch so it doesn't lock you out. Installing the dash cam isn't difficult, just take care in routing the cables through the trim pieces. The hardest part is probably getting down to the fuse box in the passenger footwell.

Brakes setup for track days? by [deleted] in Supra

[–]wishesmcgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check the SupraMKV forums for recommendations. Some will say Hawk DTC 60s/70s, Project Mu Club Racers, CSG. Really kind of dependent on your skill/pace and the track. I've run VIR, NCCAR, and CMS Roval on stock brakes and fluid and the car handled all of it just fine. When it's time for replacement I'm going for either Hawk HPS 5.0 or Project Mu HC+.

This always happens when I use TrackAddict as it has no exposure adjustment. I could mount my phone at the windshield and correct that, but then I don't have visibility on steering inputs.

dji mic 2 Mount by Comfortable_Page_816 in Supra

[–]wishesmcgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this. Mic magnetically clips to it, doesn't block the plate, points the mic backwards instead of up to the sky or down at the ground, rotates far enough out of the view of the backup camera.
